G20 and Global Economy – Fiscal Policy

October 9, 2011

By Padmini Arhant

Amid weak global economy largely contributed to United States and European sluggish growth compounded with other economic woes like high unemployment, inflation and,

National budget confined to austerity and controversial tax hikes or tax-cuts is a phenomenal challenge confronting the industrialized and developing nations.

Beginning with industrialized economies – the economic stimulus since recession onset was aimed at growth surge and job creation, facilitating liquidity to overcome credit crunch following financial markets reaction to derivatives discrepancies in the deregulated environment.

The steps involved Capital supply to salvage targeted high-end manufacturing industry from bankruptcy and banks bailouts in eliminating toxic assets from the balance sheets respectively.

Among the industrialized groups – the two major economies viz. the United States and Japan share mutual setbacks from overheating of the economy in two familiar areas – the stocks and housing market.

Both nations have struggled to jumpstart the economy with steady growth exacerbated by global recession and sovereign debt.

Speculations on European national debt and potential credit default overall impact on euro as the European Union currency and Euro Zone status in the globalized economy foment market volatility.

Economic forecasts and projections weighed in objectivity could avoid unnecessary market turbulence.

Japan is also burdened with U.S debt as the second largest creditor behind China – the primary creditor and the second largest economy.

In order to address various economic problems and avert possible Double-dip recession,

It is necessary to review public policies and economic tools that are available for short term and long-term objectives.

Fiscal Policy (Balancing the Budget), Monetary Policy (Controlling inflation and liquidity), Trade Policy (Growth and Investment),

Additionally Revenue and Spending for efficient government functionality and deficit reduction could broaden perspectives on this critical matter.

Fiscal Policy – Comprising government expenditure and taxation, non-tax revenue from government owned investments and utilizing government assets such as bonds and other suitable financial instruments for borrowing to meet government obligations.

United States and Europe focus is on budget approval with the dilemma on spending cuts along with taxation being contentious leading to opposition’s government shut down ultimatums causing political gridlock in the U.S,

Notwithstanding justified public frustration over fund slashing for education, health care, pension plans and most importantly lack of jobs triggering riots in London, Paris, Athens, Madrid and Lisbon…calling for government actions to deteriorating economic conditions.

United States citizens protest against Wall Street conduct premised on greed driven strategies responsible for the status quo is slighted with –

White House clarification on the issue as –

“Wall Street ill-practices are not necessarily illegal.”

The sub-prime mortgage activities having deprived more than million homeowners ownership and economies facing insolvency in the hedge fund debacle,

Financial institutions’ exorbitant fee on banking transactions and consensus to stranglehold consumers despite banking industry dependency upon them is a kamikaze effort given the flawed tradition proved detrimental to global economy.

Corporations and finance industry consumer-friendly approach would not only guarantee significant consumer base but also enhance good will – a valuable asset in the competitive setting.

Fiscal policy effectiveness is largely related to both spending and revenue trends with immediate requirement on tax reform.

They are summarized as follows:

Closing loopholes used in tax evasion,

Tracking funds in offshore tax havens for individuals and corporations.

Mandatory disclosure of financial assets for high profile and rank and file public figures on taxpayers funded income viz. legislators, Parliamentarians, Cabinet secretaries, Political party leaderships regardless of hierarchy, kickbacks donors and recipients in the private and public domain.

Easing tax burden on the middle class,

Tax exemption for the lower income groups and,

Tax structure readjustment – the bipartisan Super committee appointed for fiscal management in the United States could enforce repealing the Bush tax cuts to the wealthiest passed in 2010 and implementing the popular Buffet Rule in 2011 through legislation.

In a broader sense, consumption tax could be marginally raised with the exception of essential food items and reallocated to health hazard products as well as luxury goods.

Taxes being predominant revenue source for government operation and capital formation yielding future benefits through infrastructure investments, research and development with patent law protecting consumer and investor interests, the ultimate target is job growth.

Passing the jobs billbeginning with small business, medium and large corporations, manufacturing and service industry incentivized with capital interjection in the form of commercial loans at affordable rates and/or various taxes like payroll taxes reduction, deferments where applicable is a top priority transcending political partisanships and myopic view on the economic problems in the near and foreseeable term.

Exploring non-tax revenue in government owned corporations or quasi undertakings (public and private sector ventures) and,

Central Banks monitored sovereign wealth funds (SWF) primarily invested in global equity markets maximizing long term return alongside Foreign exchange reserves typically held in international floats e.g. U.S. dollar, euro, yen and sterling pound facilitate short term liquidity flow for capital infusion.

Spending is the balancing act that requires eliminating wasteful expenditures, trimming or downsizing overheads costs, maintaining and restoring entitlements programs especially –

Social SecurityReiterating the fact as the only safety net for American families enduring tough economic situation and non-interference in this regard would continue to deliver the desirable result.

Privatization would seriously jeopardize the financial security sustained in the current profitable investment for continuous payments necessary to stimulate the economy via consumer spending and growth expansion.

Medicare Senior citizens and low-income demography – the two key consumer categories would be forced to spend meager savings and income on expensive health care costs other than prescription drugs that could otherwise be diversified in retail consumption.

Norwegian model in this respect has successfully integrated essential social services like retirement, medical and disability benefits to all with capital investment in public trust.

As part of income redistribution the island nation with GDP per capita $53,269 ranked 3rd highest in the world consisting high living standards compared to European counterparts has managed against poverty, hunger and disease – the three survival factors posing impediments in progress for developed and developing nations.

Norway affected by European debt crisis is experiencing decline in high-end manufacturing similar to Germany with 40% GDP attributed to exports relying on global demand.

Defense Spending United States Global Empire established far and wide with 737 U.S. Military bases and more than 2,500,000 personnel deployed overseas in different locations is astounding and,

Unfortunately escapes the fiscal conservatives attention preoccupied in terminating social security, Medicare, Children nutrition… and other vital provisions in the entitlements for vulnerable population at home.

Not to mention the no-exit strategy wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan with extended proxy wars in Yemen and Somalia taking human and economic toll to serve the defense industry profitability.

It is high time to review and reevaluate the defense budget saving trillions of dollars by ending foreign occupations and military warfare.

Instead upgrading national security mechanisms and facilities with sophisticated forces would be a formidable deterrent to potential threats.

Simultaneously defense divestments in economic and social development achieved with political stability in war torn nations would be more effective in containing terrorism considering the military aggression thus far has failed to produce any positive outcome.

Furthermore, the prolonged military intervention has contributed to terror networks proliferation and instigated violence against fellow citizens causing regional tension and instability witnessed in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq and Somalia.

Hence retracting military aspirations to accommodate all-encompassing domestic goals is desperately needed to expedite national and global economic recovery.

Discretionary Spending Congressional discernment in appropriations act preserving job oriented and community enrichment projects would supplement remedies for economic revival.

Equilibrium in fiscal policy with spending streamlined and revenue boosted through fair taxation and,

Other avenues like penalties in environmental damage,

Hikes in licensing fee where appropriateanything endangering life and economic opportunity without aiming at average citizens or natural endowments for direct public use could complement measures in economic meltdown reversal.

Macroeconomic, Monetary and Trade policy together with European Sovereign Debt Crisis centralized on (PIGS) Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Iceland, Greece and Spain economies will be presented individually for clarity.

Meanwhile, getting the fiscal house in order to promote jobs with government and business cooperation would prevent economic crises escalation.

Peace to all!

Thank you.

Gandhi Jayanthi – Remembering the Mahatma

October 2, 2011

By Padmini Arhant

India along with the rest of the world pays tribute to the pioneer of Peace and Non-Violence  – commemorating the Mahatma’s birth on 2nd October, 1869.

Mahatma Gandhi continues to remain the pillar of strength and paragon of virtue in modern history.

Gandhiji’s non-violence i.e. Ahimsa philosophy to achieve political freedom for India extended beyond the shores and emulated by other venerable leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, in civil rights movement and later by prominent freedom fighters viz. Dr. Nelson Mandela until recently in the revolutions across the Middle East.

Mahatma Gandhi’s conviction on peace as the formidable option in resolving conflicts, ending incessant wars and violence proved in the events world over.

The peace advocate pledge to humanity was largely premised on tremendous respect for life and unity among all not barring race, religion, caste, class, education or otherwise socio-economic background.

Mahatma Gandhi was a dedicated environmentalist extending his service in the protection of all species and aptly reflected in one of his many famous quotes –

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”

On effective governanceMahatma Gandhi revealed the unadulterated Truth the influential demography prefers to ignore in contemporary politics.

“An error does not become truth by reason of multiplied propagation, nor does truth become error because nobody sees it.

Corruption and hypocrisy ought not to be inevitable products of democracy, as they undoubtedly are today.”

The human suffering is largely contributed to abuse of power denying basic rights, fairness and equal opportunity.

Telangana plight in Andhra Pradesh, India, Sri Lankan Tamils endurance of injustice, oppression and persecution in Yemen, Syria, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Bahrain…and occupied territories around the world serve as examples in presumptuousness overcast on leadership responsibility towards the republic.

Discussion on Telangana, Sri Lankan Tamils…will be presented in the immediate course.

Gandhian spirit has inspired many in the past and the present with more to follow in the future.

With due reverence to the Mahatma (The Greatest Soul to walk on earth),

Wishing Bapu (Father of the Nation) and the icon of Peace for the global society,

Many Happy Returns of the Day! Gandhi Jayanthi Shubh Kamnayein on this day, October 2, 2011.

Peace to all!

Thank you.

UN – Palestinian Statehood Resolution

September 27, 2011

By Padmini Arhant

During the United Nations General Assembly 66th Session last week,

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas submitted the plea for Statehood and full UN membership as the sovereign state on behalf of 10,900,000 Palestinians in Palestine, the Arab region and the rest of the world combined in an effort to end the freedom struggle.

Palestinian citizens have been seeking sovereignty over six decades with recognition from more than 122 countries earlier and a significant number now affirming solidarity behind long overdue Palestinian independence.

Israeli-Palestinian conflict arising from Israeli occupation and settlements expansion along with checkpoints and barrier wall construction in Palestinian territories including East Jerusalem has exacerbated peace talks defaulting to Israeli military aggression and Hamas rocket firing with civilian casualties on both sides diminishing peace prospects.

Furthermore, Israel being the United States strongest ally and the largest military as well as monetary aid recipient overwhelmingly favored by the benefactor – United States in the so-called peace process.

Negotiations thus far have failed with United States obliging Israel’s position under security pretext while allowing rapid settlements growth in the occupied Palestinian land fomenting justified anger and frustration among beleaguered Palestinians.

United States open declaration to veto resolution on Palestinian Statehood claiming the move unilateral confirms the bias maintained all along with Whitehouse and U.S. Congress rejection of UN Fact Finding Mission on the Gaza Conflict by Justice Richard Goldstone in 2009 and Freedom Flotilla 2010 –

The sworn allegiance to the all powerful Israel especially in clear violation of international laws has adversely affected peace dialogue in the otherwise resolvable dispute.

Israel and United States objection over Palestinian approach through United Nations for statehood is self-contradictory considering the precedence in Israeli Statehood originating from British Mandate of Palestine in 1947 evolving into –

The newly set up UN organization approval of the Palestine Partition Plan (United Nations General Assembly Resolution 181) on 29 November 1947 dividing the nation into two states viz. Arab and Jewish despite Arab disagreement then against the imposition.

Subsequently on May 14, 1948 the World Zionist Organization Executive Head and Palestine Jewish Agency President – David Ben-Gurion proclaimed Israel independence on the day before the British mandate expiration.  Soon after David Ben-Gurion became Israel’s first Prime Minister.

Since Israel emergence – the UN majority member states through numerous resolutions have disapproved Israel’s territorial incursions, the continuous settlements in West Bank and military invasions, administration and laws on East Jerusalem – illegal and invalid.

In terms of the present United Nations Security Council resolution on the pertinent issue – granting statehood to Palestine in semblance to UN General Assembly Resolution 181 in the establishment of Israel,

United States opposition to Palestinian request is subjugation on the Palestinian population and a major setback for modern democratic society representing the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave.

United States could play a positive role in Israel and Palestine’s common interest with the UNSC vote without threatening to jeopardize history in making.

United Kingdom following suit would be a great opportunity in reparation of the incomplete British Mandate for Palestine enabling a new dimension to the status quo.

Besides, the liberal partner in the current coalition UK government has a unique moment to fulfill the pledge to restore human rights and freedom on and offshore in the crucial UNSC vote for Palestinian statehood.

France backing Palestinian statehood at the UN General Assembly 66th session could be exemplified in action with the vote that would pronounce the European commitment to liberty and democracy.

Russia having cast the vote for the two-state solution on pre 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as Palestine’s capital is a formidable peacemaker in the monumental UN resolution.

China’s vote at the Security Council for Palestinian cause would define the relations with Middle East and Islamic nations in Central Asia and Africa given the emerging economy’s energy dependent status not excluding the anticipated export demand.

Understandably, Israel and Palestinian authorities have relevant concerns over issues similar to the events in the aftermath of Israel establishment.

Although the situation now contrast with the circumstances then with few exceptions, it is necessary to consider the factors for smooth transitioning and long lasting peace.

Israel highlighted on security, borders, Arab world accepting Israel sovereignty and the right to return for residency.

Security Israel being the nuclear nation together with United States providing nuclear, military and logistic capabilities are indomitable forces in the region dispelling the myth about security matter.

Poignantly, Palestinian emancipation would preoccupy the citizens in nation building and renew trade relation with Israel preventing unnecessary intrusion from fundamentalism or anti-Semitism that would mean anti-Palestinian growth.

Border – Per unanimous consensus among UN member states and United Nations Security Council Resolution 242, which underscores –

“The inadmissibility of the territory acquisition by war”,

Hence incumbent upon Israel to withdraw from occupied territories in exchange for normal dealings with Arab partners based on the “Land for peace” policy.

Accordingly, territories claimed in 1967 Six-Day War by Israel will be returned i.e. West Bank (Judaea and Samaria), East Jerusalem, the Gaza strip to Palestine and the Golan Heights to Syria respectively.

Retaining the traditional demarcations of the Old City in Jerusalem into the Muslim Quarter, the Jewish Quarter, the Christian Quarter and the Armenian Quarter,

With due reverence to all religions  – Judaism, Islam, Bahá’í and Christianity in the Holy city of Jerusalem:

In the Israeli controlled Old City comprising the Western Wall and the Temple Mount,

The Western Wall and only the Jewish place of worship at the Temple Mount would be assigned as the Jewish territory.

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre also known as the Church of the Resurrection – important to Christians near Muristan in the Christian Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem to assume the specific religious designation without infringement from other religions.

However, the Old City with Al Aqsa Mosque located on the far southern side of the Temple Mount facing the Holy Mecca and the Dome of the Rock in the middle sacred to Islam and the Muslim community site, Waqf would be part of the Palestinian territory.

Israeli government enforced controversial ban on prayer by non-Muslim visitors at the site creating false perception is to be lifted for religious and communal harmony.

Israel sovereignty:  Reiterating the ‘Land for peace’ premise, Arab recognition of Israel sovereignty is directly linked to Israel honoring Palestinian statehood under the defined goals.

The trend reversal from chaos to calmness rests on reciprocation for bilateral and regional peace.

Right to Return: Palestinian diaspora – the refugees in Jordan, Syria, Iraq and across the Middle East in particular, return to post-independent Palestine could be reinstated as Palestinian citizens in Palestinian territory.

They could perhaps be economic migrants expediting productivity and development in Gaza – the coastal strip having experienced the ill effects of warfare.

Simultaneously, immigration laws applicable for entry into Israel and vice versa unless a bilateral agreement is entered between Palestinian and Israeli governments to promote education, business and tourism through special visa for neighbors.

The contentious issues from the Palestinian side are – Israeli occupation, settlements expansion, check posts and borders.

Repeating the process from 2005 in Gaza Complete withdrawal of Israeli troops and settlers in addition to dismantling check posts from all Palestinian territories is required in compliance with UN resolution on Palestinian statehood.

Any violation in this regard would constitute breach of international treaty with economic sanctions, freezing bank accounts and diplomatic ties, travel restrictions and denying aviation, marine and ground access as consequences to rejecting peace accord.

Israeli-Palestinian crisis has prolonged over decades in averting peace rather than confrontation with intransigence prevailing over reason.

The loss of precious lives in Palestine and Israel could no longer be in vain and Palestinian citizens approach UN General Assembly in trust and hope for formal identity with their native land.

United Nations Security Council and General Assembly members are once again entrusted with the humanitarian task of ending people suffering identical to UNGA action in 1948 towards Israel.

Palestine will be born again with global endorsement for statehood at the United Nations,

Israel could share the inevitable peace and progress as a reliable ally and innovative partner leading the region and the rest of the world in all frontiers.

Permanent resolution to Israeli Palestinian dispute is within grasp and procrastination is evidently detrimental to world security reverting to cyclical violence.

Israel and Palestine have been burying their future – the youth caught in the crossfire.

It is time to ceasefire in settlement for a new beginning.

Best Wishes and Good Luck! To Palestine and Israel for successful two-state coexistence in peace.

Peace to all!

Thank you.

UN General Assembly – 66th Session 2011

September 24, 2011

By Padmini Arhant

Warm Greetings! To Honorable leaders and dignitaries from different parts of the world currently attending the United Nations 66th Session in New York.

Since the last session, the bright and gloomy forecasts on global events from political, economic, social, educational, environmental, humanitarian to ethical matter are thought provoking with substantive actions required to address the prevalent crises and achievements thus far.

It would be appropriate to begin with economy being the major concern in the international domain.

The aim is to provide synopsis in this presentation with comprehensive layout to follow for G-20 and global markets in a separate submission.

The common syndromes in the slow economic growth among the industrialized nations are debt and possible credit default.

United States and Europe share the budget and deficit related problems prompting austerity and necessary tax hikes against the wealthiest,

Besides higher unemployment, lower GDP, currency effects and investment choices delaying economic revival.

In other regions – Russia expanding oil exports to Asia and bilateral trades utilizing the geographic vantage all around.

Asia viz. China and Japan as primary US debt holders, closely monitoring the U.S. fiscal policy and economy.

With overseas exports under pressure, China’s focus is on domestic demand.

India’s efforts are on inflation and growth sustenance.  However, government commitment required in affordability reaching the lowest economic strata to bridge the enlarged disparity.

Other Asian economies are adapting to normal range stimulated by regional trade, while adjusting to U.S and Europe performance.

Africa and Latin America – Transnational trade and overseas investments facilitating economic activities with developmental obstacles experienced along the way from political and social dynamics.

Middle East – Political transformations briefly interrupted oil production and economic functions in the region.  Nonetheless the pace is returning post-political upheaval gaining momentum to restore supply and demand.

Politics – Middle East attracts attention with Arab Spring revolutions leading to long overdue evolution at the martyrs and survivors remarkable sacrifices in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya whereas Yemen, Bahrain, Syria, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Oman and Qatar yet to be liberated from the prolonged authoritarianism.

The political uprisings suppressed with violence only delegitimize the ruling power with the heads of the state futile determination to overcome the inevitable change across the Middle East and elsewhere.

Instead the leaderships honoring the popular will with peaceful transitioning of power to people for democratic rule would avoid unnecessary aftermath ordeal witnessed among deposed leaders in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya.

Iraq under Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki government is confronted with explosions and sectarian violence hindering economic activity. Iraq is a secular nation in requirement of national leadership and government that is inclusive not exclusive to reach the milestones in every aspect.  Security is compromised with violence attributed to the presence of U.S and allies troops in the beleaguered nation.

PalestinePalestinian President Mahmoud Abbas direct plea to the United Nations for statehood and individual membership is legitimate approach given the biased and unsuccessful peace talks in the form of negotiations over decades has exacerbated the two states solutions gradually converted to one state proposition under United States strongest ally and the militarily powerful Israel,

Ignoring Palestinian dissent against Israeli occupation and settlements expansion in Palestine State – Gaza, West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Also not to mention the loss of precious lives on both sides caused by intransigence in the otherwise resolvable dispute demonstrating genuine empathy and rationality.

The recognition sought on 1967 borders by Palestinian citizens is valid and the United Nations overwhelming acknowledgment could potentially expedite the much anticipated political independence and sovereignty for Palestine with the established State of Israel co-existing in peace.

Palestine statehood in-depth discussion will follow the UN address.

Egypt: Post revolution developments in Egypt under the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces fall short of expectations and unfortunately not delivered the promises on many issues.

No election scheduled for transfer of power to Egypt republic.

Supreme Council appointing governors and provincial heads representing the military rather than being elected from the mainstream.

Again government staff selected within the army depriving the Main Street from public service.

Imposed restrictions on freedom of speech, human rights and independent press and media access…reminiscent of the predecessor hardline governance to remain in power.

Egypt freedom struggle is not over until civilian rule is established in 2011. Egypt revolution might have to repeat the earlier peaceful and non-violent political resurgence to implement the realistic change.

Tunisia: Tunisian political stability is largely dependent on economic growth – trade prospects with other nations could ease the burden on the North African nation.

Asia:

Japan: Japan’s high premiership turnover and political alternation at frequent intervals contributes to economic uncertainties with a direct impact on the global economy.

The trend reversal could be reassuring and promote national recovery from the devastating natural disaster and the nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant.

China – Turbulence in international relations is a distraction for the world’s largest manufacturer and the emerging economic power.  China could play an important role in balanced trade and foster strong strategic ties with neighbors for multilateral benefit.

Tibet Congratulations! To Lobsang Sangay – New Prime Minister of Tibet’s government in-exile on the extraordinary feat with great vision for the Buddhist nation.  The imminent independence from Mainland China as part of the political sea change worldwide would conclude Tibet’s freedom struggle.

Korean Peninsula – Peaceful exchange between North and South with probable unification in the near future would strengthen the fragile relation eliminating military interactions.

ASEAN Members – Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia. Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, VietNam – Solidarity is the key factor in the renewed economic goals reflected in the survival of the global recession.

Myanmar – The future lies with National League for Democracy under Aung San Suu Kyi leadership replacing the Military Junta oppression.

Singapore – Conforming to twenty first century political system with democratic values would enhance the island nation’s accomplishments in all dimensions.

MalaysiaPrime Minister Najib Razak pledge for a mature, modern and functioning democracy preserving public order without infringement upon civil liberty and racial harmony is welcome and,

Furthermore repealing laws such as the Internal Security Act (ISA), the Emergency Ordinance allowing government detention without trial, media censorship via license restriction and forbidding public assembly – set forth the nation on the progressive path.

Indian Sub-Continent – India and Pakistan

The nuclear neighbors peace initiatives are often disrupted with terror attacks on Indian soil.

Simultaneously Pakistan is also the target for the terror networks in the country under constant shelling with bomb blasts on the ground and U.S. drones from aerial assault notwithstanding calamities like flooding rendering existence merely impossible.

Remedial strategies could begin with Pakistan delineating the intelligence agency ISI and the military to the relevant job operations with no interference in civilian rule.

Any objection from these two powerful institutions would clarify the need to exercise the civilian authority in retaining the personnel committed to national interest and removing those submitted to personal and/or external sources whether they are terrorist organization or foreign power.

It is imperative for India and Pakistan to withstand any foreign pressure or intervention with the intention to create permanent tension for vested interests like territorial incursions and arms supply triggering the blood river on both sides.

Instead both nations moving forward with full-fledged diplomacy resuming trade relations, cultural exchange and disclosure on terror plots along with cross-interrogation of terror suspects on either side would reinforce mutual trust and cooperation.

India and Pakistan bilateral relationship is significant to alleviate poverty, hunger and disease prevalent in both countries.  Divestments from defense to economic and social development would be substantially positive.

Sri Lanka Dominating the headlines for the worst crimes against humanity in the genocide and ethnic cleansing of Tamils by denying human rights in modern times is not only regrettable but also deeply reprehensible.

Sri Lankan President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces – Mahinda Rajapaksa implicated for authorizing the inhumane executions of unarmed men, women and children calls for international investigation and prosecution to condemn the state sponsored violence against own nationals.

Sri Lankan Tamils have been alienated without political, economic and social opportunity driving the islands minority to the point of no return after having economically prospered from the exploitation of the same groups since the British Raj mobilization within the Indian sub-continent.

It is a moment of reflection seeking reparable action through reconciliation with equal status to uplift the marginalized ethnic demography.

Meanwhile leaderships forging ties with states like Sri Lanka and Myanmar foment abuse of power undermining democracy they represent in the new millennium.

Bangladesh – The controversial water distribution between Bangladesh and West Bengal, India could be amicably settled deriving common use of resources for the vast population survival.

Nepal – The communist infiltration subsequent to monarchy dissolution is proved detrimental to the nation in the Himalayan foothills with the influence reaching across North Eastern India.

China, Cuba and North Korea are prominent examples of the system with citizens plight conspicuous to worldview.

Bhutan – The Himalayan kingdom emerging from the recent earthquake is offered necessary assistance to contain casualties. Politically the existing Parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy could pave way to republic-governed democracy in synchrony with other democracies in the region and the world.

Africa – Sudan split into two nations with South Sudan controlling the oil fields and North Sudan in possession of refineries and distribution output.

The sensitive location – the oil rich Abyei is due for referendum in this partition to choose between Muslim North and Christian South with Darfur in the largest African nation having paid the price in the civil war.

Most African nations have dealt with the ramifications of civil war erupting from religious discord, economic woes and poignantly disagreements on electoral outcome in Kenya and Ivory Coast…are urged to invest in peace and unity to guide Africa towards pervasive tranquility and prosperity.

Latin America – The economic upsurge in Brazil, Argentina and Peru serve as the model for other nations in Latin America.  The public and private sector collaboration notably produced the desirable growth rate. Political leaderships in Latin America are adopting innovative approach to solve unique problems.

War on drugs in Mexico and Columbia is consuming enormous resources that could be invested in life betterment.

Education in concurrence with law enforcement could bring relief in curtailing drug consumption,

Pacific Islands: Being the primary victim of natural catastrophes,

Environmental protection is the predominant request to the industrialized, developed and developing nations,

Tourism depended economies in these areas are adversely affected from environmental damage.

Global society support to the environmental cause would be universally beneficial.

Western Nations advancements could be emulated where applicable without disinheriting the individual cultural heritage.

Global Security and Warfare: Ending wars and curtailing violence across the globe would guarantee peace and security with non-violence, peace and diplomacy substituting the status quo.

Environment: Off shore and shallow water drilling, Coal mining, Mountain top removal, Nuclear power plants are pursued with government permission irrespective of the fossil fuel and nuclear contamination endangering life on earth.

It is critical to pause and review the adversarial effects of these options in due respect to the environment and successive generation.

Humanitarian Issues: Women, Gay Community, Transgender Citizens, Ethnic minorities, children and anyone perceived as weak and vulnerable fall prey to religious, social and state victimization.

Activism to dispel ignorance using technology would immensely safeguard citizens’ rights across the spectrum.

Ethical Matter: Combating corruption, retrieving black money and tax evaded funds…apart from institutionalizing transparency and accountability without prejudice and preferential treatment in the society is monumental step towards character building invoking compassion, selflessness, credibility and patriotism.

All are created equal and therefore None are above the law.

Finally, United Nations Security Council – Permanent membership reconfiguration accepting Japan, India, Brazil, United Arab Emirates, Turkey, South Africa, Norway and Germany would categorically signify the UN as the international organization with diverse ideas and resolutions to global crises.

On that optimistic note,

Best Wishes and success in all endeavors to nations around the world.

Peace to all!

Thank you.

United States Judicial Ethics – Troy Davis Execution

September 22, 2011

United States Judicial Ethics – Troy Davis Execution

 Padmini Arhant

Troy Anthony Davis, the innocent victim of death penalty was executed following the United States Supreme Court denial on the last minute worldwide appeal to save his life.

Troy Davis maintained innocence and was respectful towards all regardless with a peaceful message to end death penalty.

Troy Davis will be remembered for awakening global consciousness on the urgent need to abolish state sponsored unnatural death in the twenty first century.

Clemency rejection despite the verdict clouded with too many reasonable doubts is a scar on the present judicial policy influenced by politics and personal ideology.

United States taking pride as the modern democracy is at the crossroads to abandon practices threatening civil and human rights contradictory to democratic values – the foundation for republic-governed sovereignty.

Those in power with the ability to ‘Change’ the status quo and lead the nation towards social progress failed in the moral duty and responsibility by upholding their position to deny Troy Davis the right to exist.

Peaceful and non-violent global movement to address social impediments attributed to obsolete laws and detrimental political decisions could deliver the progressive outcome transcending polarizing factors for greater good.

The ultimate power remains with the people to transform the political will in the society.

Citizens’ representation not reflected in action requires collective response through corrective measures during the electoral process.

Troy Davis legacy to humanity to challenge injustice and medieval customs like death sentence will continue in his honor and memory forging peace and harmony.

Troy Davis presence in spirit will be cherished in service to humanity filled with compassion and healing power.

With heartfelt condolences to Troy Davis family and millions of supporters around the world especially in the excruciating final moments of his life,

Prayers offered for Troy Davis soul to rest in peace after the pain and suffering he endured on earth.

In remembrance of Troy Davis sacrifice for social justice,

Peace to all!

Thank you.

United States – Troy Davis Clemency Plea

United States – Troy Davis Clemency Plea

Padmini Arhant

Troy Davis, citizen of the great State of Georgia is scheduled for death sentence by lethal injection on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at 7.00p.m.

Troy Davis conviction is a sad chapter in the United States legal history predominantly due to the accused denied a fair trial and the final verdict arrived with a shadow of doubt as admitted by the U.S. District Judge William T. Moore in his latest statement –

“New evidence casts some additional, minimal doubt on his conviction.”

The entire judicial process reveals the omissions on many accounts leading to the wrongful conviction of Troy Davis.

These facts deserve the legal and rational minds attention in the civil society that could possibly prevent the erroneous decision – sentencing the innocent to premature unnatural death.

First and foremost – There is no physical evidence found against Troy Davis – particularly No blood or DNA tied Davis to the crime and the weapon was never located.

Seven out of nine witnesses have recanted their earlier testimonies against Troy Davis claiming they were unlawfully obtained by coercion.

Of the remaining two witnesses –

One of them who has not recanted his testimony is Sylvester “Red” Coles — the principle alternative suspect against whom there is new evidence implicating him as the gunman. Nine individuals have signed affidavits implicating Sylvester Coles.

Furthermore, Sylvester Coles has stated to Quiana Glover that he was the real shooter. Quiana Glover did not testify at the original trial.

According to latest news reports – “Sylvester Coles could not be reached for comment on Monday and Tuesday, and did not answer his door this week when a reporter visited.”

Death penalty is a serious verdict with irreversible consequence upon execution.

The death sentence mired with doubts and influenced testimonies upheld as final verdict weakens the judiciary system failing to recognize and follow the fundamental judicial premise in criminal proceedings –

Beyond a Reasonable Doubt.

Reasonable doubt is a standard of proof used in criminal trials. When a criminal defendant is prosecuted, the prosecutor must prove the defendant’s guilt Beyond a Reasonable Doubt.

If the jury—or the judge in a bench trial—has a reasonable doubt as to the defendant’s guilt, the jury or judge should pronounce the defendant NOT GUILTY.

The U.S. District Judge William T. Moore confirming the additional and minimal doubt overcast along with the facts presented in this case unequivocally clarify the prosecution failure to satisfy the principal requirement – Beyond a Reasonable Doubt.

The State of Georgia and the Superior Court behind the verdict is burdened with the responsibility to uphold the law of the land honoring individual rights and providing equal access to all parties to maintain flawlessness in judicial process.

The State of Georgia approval of Troy Davis clemency plea would be a monumental step towards ethical efficacy with the southern state leading the nation and the rest of the world on the path of light in ending capital punishment.

Troy Davis humble request to the State and the highest judicial authority for his liberty especially after serving more than twenty years for the crime he did not commit is hard to decline on legal and humanitarian grounds.

It is sincerely hoped that the State of Georgia and the Superior court would kindly repeal the execution of Troy Davis by lethal injection on this day.

Similarly the victim’s family – Mrs. Anneliese MacPhail, Mrs. Joan MacPhail, Mark MacPhail Jr., and Madison MacPhail in recognition of the kindness displayed by the deceased police officer Mark MacPhail could perhaps extend the gesture – sparing Troy Davis life to promote compassion and peace in memory of the honorable police officer Mark MacPhail.

In appreciation and respect for life,

Peace to all!

Thank you.

Humanity – Death Penalty Abolition

September 19, 2011

By Padmini Arhant

Life is a gift to be cherished and celebrated by all.

Loss of life is traumatic and society utilizing every instance in promoting non-violence would invoke respect for life.

Human life is an opportunity to nurture and save other lives for time is the essence to make a difference in the world.

The limited life span for humanitarian service in any capacity is a blessing with the power to heal the wounded, the bereaved and the less fortunate – spreading compassion in dedication to humanity.

Life sparing actions provide occasions to reflect, review and respond to situations that otherwise are lost in the decisions to end other human being existence.

In modern times, death penalty verdict in murder trials and criminal proceedings sadly freezes the passage of period defaulting to medieval era known for inhumane practices such as life terminations at the individual or collective discretion with regrettable consequences upon extemporaneous delivery in the life and death matter.

The authorities empowered to decide on clemency or leniency plea assume unique role to either follow precedence or guide the misled in the direction of peace and reform adapting to the new millennium progress.

The erroneous executions underscoring the specific objective to grant justice to victims often burden the society with guilt and remorse due to the accused along with the family subsequently falling victim to the irreversible course preempting premature death especially –

When the accused is established innocent based on the factual evidence.

Capital punishment in settlement for another life is a setback in human relation improvement and not very effective in containing crimes within society.

The tradition espouses acrimony against harmony leaving little or no hope to succeed in deterring crime – the judicial aim in maintaining law and order.

Instead reversing the trend with community service focused on sharing the negative experiences of wrongdoings would substantially influence the potential offenders in refraining from unlawful activity.

Social structure and legal system adopting positive methods to discipline and help the incarcerated start afresh vowed to serve society constructively would enable them to build self-esteem leading others in similar situation to follow suit.

Death sentence abolition would reset human mindset in approaching social issues with result-oriented measures transcending polarizing factors to meet the economic and ethical standards in the evolutionary process.

It is sincerely hoped that the global society would consider the request to abolish unnatural death in human control demonstrating commitment to life, restoring faith in virtues serving as the moral compass alongside laws preventing criminal activities without human rights violation.

Across the globe there are many nations still upholding execution in justification of crimes involving mortalities despite the custom fostering violence contradictory to the intended message condemning the fatal act.

Death penalty represents Dark Age in human civilization and continuation in the twenty first century overcast significant accomplishments thus far.

All those individuals in death row from different parts of the world seeking pardon could perhaps be made eligible for repentance with appropriate findings in addition to pledging remaining life towards humanitarian cause and environmental protection ultimately resulting in greater good.

With prayers for goodness to pervade life,

Peace to all!

Thank you.

United States – Jobs, Economy and Deficit Reduction

September 18, 2011

By Padmini Arhant

United States unemployment at 9.2% and disproportionately higher among African Americans about 16.2% is national concern deserving attention from lawmakers, corporate America and institutions in the advisory role on job creation.

Economic stimulus through banking industry and automobile sector bailouts including various tax credits to middle class as well as tax breaks to companies,

Not barring Bush tax cuts extension to the wealthiest in the growth revival expectation is yet to produce anticipated jobs across the nation.

Beginning with credit crunch affecting small business and medium enterprise along with housing market decline despite historic lower interest rate,

In addition to stagnant job market restrains consumer spending relevant to energize industrial output.

Incentivizing small and medium entrepreneurships with required capital via business loans at special rates for established business and those struggling to retain or hire workers,

While minimizing health care costs and tax burden might provide relief to small businesses in turn easing the unemployment situation.

Corporations holding cash reserves could boost consumer confidence through jobs with domestic investments in manufacturing and service industry besides promoting research and development.

Tax breaks to corporations when utilized in job retention would promote economy and revenue prospects to address deficit reduction.

Simultaneously tracking tax evasions by corporations and wealthiest in the society could potentially deduce contributors to existing economic woes and growing national debt.

Regulations in the legislated financial reform is redundant with the lack of initiative and political will to appoint dedicated consumer advocate including crucial checks and balances on Wall Street irregularities having become standard business practice in the era of hedge fund type mismanagement.

Housing market is still under enormous pressure due to inadequate programs to help homeowners salvage foreclosures and short sales – promoting unscrupulous methods among trade representatives and lenders focused on immediate gains precipitating decline in home value.

As a result home investments is less attractive driving long term investors away from real estate to other investment opportunity with precious metals and commodities comparatively yielding better returns even against the increasingly volatile bond securities.

Stabilizing housing market with pervasive assistance largely from financial institutions having benefitted in the taxpayer bailouts could now reciprocate by offering relevant discounts or considerations to all i.e. first time buyers and significant population facing hardships to keep their homes in the deepening recession.

Such comprehensive measures would then generate rebound in home prices and construction industry not excluding occupations associated with commercial and residential real estate resetting employment for labor segment.

The current threshold in home rescue plan viz. ‘Make Home Affordable’  (MHA) is restrictive barely accommodating the needs of vast majority entirely at lenders’ mercy and discretion in interest rates modification or present market value adjustment for viable affordability given the available parameters favor lenders more than borrowers in the prevalent economy.

Monopoly in the national or global market share redefines capitalism endangering consumer rights and market economy dynamics.

J P Morgan Chase heading a group of five banks in control of 95% world derivatives market could inevitably threaten competition with corporate policies overriding consumer protective regulations and other necessary market interventions.

Similarly in the telecommunication sector – AT&T recent acquisitions are T-Mobile, Verizon, Cingular, Xanboo…are just a few with more on the horizon.

Nations confronted with rising debt and austerity to survive credit rating and budget crisis pose lingering uncertainty in the global financial market and general economy.

The constant speculation on possible default foment trepidation in the otherwise willful overseas economic partners investment proposals to alleviate challenges in the higher debt economies struggling between rigorous spending cuts and political opposition to tax hikes against wealthiest reaping benefits at the poor and middle income groups cost.

Tax code reform and streamlining tax structure closing loopholes is centralized discussion missing in action.

Another vital revenue source is holding domestic black money hoarders in foreign bank accounts especially Swiss bank deposits and several tax havens under disguised operations accountable with no bars in the application of law against culprits.

National bankruptcy is attributed to erroneous economic policies and indefinite military engagements offshore,

Notwithstanding unlawful activities in tax avoidance striking the hard working demography – the lower and middle class burdened with bulk tax payments as active consumers and taxpayers without substantial privileges unlike the wealthiest corporations and individuals deriving maximum income on minimum tax liability.

The pending job legislation seeking $447 billion stimulus from the Super Committee $1.5 trillion savings with compromises on social security and Medicare is contentious for it would directly impact the core consumer percentage forced to withdraw or constrain retail expenditure on common household goods and services for expensive private health care within limited disposable income.

The ramifications would be severe on retail and small businesses in the slowing consumerism with main street struggling to make ends meets in the dire economy.

With respect to infrastructure jobs in the package – the stimulus bill $787 billion passed in February 2009 consisted allocation for infrastructure repair and restoration.

Perhaps review in this context would shed light on productivity and precise job delivery in the past two years from this particular source prompting access to any residual funds for remaining job oriented national projects.

Funds interjection into the economy requires monitoring and periodic evaluation to determine performance followed by remedial course n the absence of desirable outcome.

If the bill comprises new techniques different from the earlier stimulants with guaranteed job surge, it might be worth pursuing the targeted goals.

However, reallocating nearly one half trillion funds calls for due diligence forsaking repeat experiments and,

Instead shifting resource deployment across the economic spectrum facilitating progress in farming, manufacturing, small business and medium enterprise, education, preserving essential services and programs via technology based outlets but cutting back on excess administration and bureaucracy in public and private sectors,

Green energy & technology supply without government sponsorships from the executive or legislative branch to safeguard taxpayers dollars.

In terms of corporate role with surplus cash in improving job conditions,

The reservations appear to emanate from looming deficit and Washington handling of the economy contrary to political perception premised on additional tax bonuses to entice corporate America on the 98% population backs enduring economic pain.

Free market economy is endowed with financial and human capital.  The player in the wide-open competitive field wasting time and resources on underlying risks is unfortunate –

The myopic view failing to recognize macroeconomic benefits tied to job investments.

In a nutshell, corporations having been responsible for economic meltdown in the heavily deregulated environment with no transparency to deter reckless activities involving public funds and holdings arguably bear prime responsibility in the status quo reversal.

Again, the political leaderships’ complacency and complicity exacerbated downslide with widespread implications on jobs, housing market, skyrocketing deficit, currency disputes, trade imbalances – revealed in Q2 US GDP 2011 at 1.3%, credit downgrading and overall grim economic report.

US Small Business Optimism index falls to 13 month low.

US August import prices excluding Fuel rise 5.3% from last year.

US Census:  Median Household income in 2010 fell 2.3% to $49,445.

US Census: US Poverty rate rose to 15.1% from 2009 – the highest now since 1983.

US Posts $134.2 billion budget deficit for August 2011.

US YTD (Year-To-Date) budget gap compares with $1.26T in 2010.

United States is not deficient in ideas, innovation and ingenuity.

The diverse skills in the American work force combined with exemplary business acumen and corporate successes are testimonies to U.S. economy being instrumental in the global economic feat.

United States economic stability and sustenance is paramount for worldwide development.

U.S. currency as international monetary unit in conjunction with developed and developing economies dependability on U.S imports reinforces United States position – the global Super turbocharger.

Corporate and political leaderships in the respective domain pledging commitment to economy and the country could expedite economic recovery uplifting citizens’ living standards with secure jobs, affordable housing and health care, Green energy and last but not the least  –

Safe and clean habitat – the legacy for future generation.

United States has triumphed the trials and tribulations throughout history and unified efforts around this time is pertinent to resolve daunting issues on the economic, political, social and environmental fronts.

Peace to all!

Thank you.

United States – 9/11 Tenth Anniversary and Terror Attacks

September 11, 2011

By Padmini Arhant

On the tenth anniversary of September 11, the United States commemorates the victims and the survivors for their ordeal from terrorism on home soil.

September 11 2001 was a horrendous experience to the citizens in the United States and across the globe.

A well-organized terror on a massive scale was carried out inside the nation i.e.

The world’s superpower equipped with the most sophisticated intelligence resources and military might along with the political clout to demand other nations to share information on national security threats suddenly found itself vulnerable and an easy target of those with comparatively inferior and dilapidated infrastructure.

Not to mention the network under U.S. and allies constant surveillance for possible strikes including international laws on money trail to fund terrorism or other unlawful activities,

Somehow succeed in masterminding the terror attacks deploying United States domestic aircrafts is weak and unconvincing with no political will to establish the truth.

The notion that the administration under President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney as well as U.S. intelligence, the State and Defense department were caught off guard in the terror assault of such magnitude does not fit the profile considering the blatant warnings and terror alerts pouring in from credible sources within and outside the United States –

Only to be ignored on multiple occasions constituting dereliction of duty in protecting the citizens, the primary responsibility of the government or any ruling authority.

Investigations regarding gross negligence by all those directly or indirectly involved has been conducted only up to a certain hierarchy as a mere formality,

While others holding the power mantle at that time now granted impunity even after the term in office despite hard evidences – suggesting the preventable terror act was never a serious concern among high profile leaderships on the top trickling down to the bottom in the security chain link that resulted in the loss of many innocent lives.

——————————————————————————————————-

According to the bipartisan 9/11 commission report:

General Findings:

What we can say with confidence is that none of the measures adopted by the U.S. government from 1998 to 2001 disturbed or even delayed the progress of the al Qaeda plot.  Across the government, there were failures of imagination, policy, capabilities, and management.

The terrorist danger from Bin Ladin and al Qaeda was not a major topic for policy debate among the public, the media, or in the Congress.  Indeed, it barely came up during the 2000 presidential campaign.

As late as September 4, 2001, Richard Clarke, the White House staffer long responsible for counterterrorism policy coordination, asserted that the government had not yet made up its mind how to answer the question:“Is al Qida a big deal?”

——————————————————————————————————–

The mutual agreement between the outgoing and incoming administrations not to bring legal or investigative actions on a monumental security violation against the then authorities regardless of stature not only undermines democracy but also set bad precedence for the future.

Constitution imposed checks and balances on the executive and legislative branch by Judiciary is subverted to serve political interests diminishing the constitutionality of the democratic system.

Justice department under administration’s direct control facilitate obstruction of Justice and hindrance in the fair and thorough scrutiny of government officials, corporate access and institutions in the advisory role to the executive branch eliminating the constitution upheld law exempting none from accountability especially in relation to national protection on all fronts.

The predecessors given a free pass on the 9/11 debacles based on the selective application in seeking redemption over retribution.

Meanwhile the alleged terror suspects are denied habeas corpus and held indefinitely in Guantanamo bay – the contentious practice and location is yet to be shut down in fulfillment of the 2008 campaign promise.

Additionally in the so-called war on terror, the former administration’s trend continues on renditions, mistreatment of unsubstantiated terror detainees…with little or no discussion on ending the undemocratic human rights violation in modern history.

Following 9/11, the military invasion and occupation of nations flurried with no due consideration for public dissent or serious ramifications on human factor, economy and regional stability.

The policy on aerial and ground military aggression via unmanned operations such as drones and robots still dominate the combat zones with civilian casualties proportionately exceeding the targets.

Terror attacks worldwide with the latest in New Delhi, India on September 7, 2011 is the contemporary challenge for ordinary citizens – the usual prey in the cyclical violence made possible by arms and ammunitions supply,

Notwithstanding the government repeat failures to ensure public safety.

Lack of preparation and conspicuously missing terror deterrents in the technological era contributes to security loopholes.

Identifying the terror operatives’ motive and apprehending the sources aiding the continuous weapons flow would dismantle the terror apparatus,

Besides monitoring and restricting materials procurement used in suicide bombings or abandoned vehicles with explosives.

Terrorism can be addressed effectively provided there is global consensus among industrialized, developed and developing nations to divest from disproportionate military expenditure to economic development alongside peaceful and diplomatic solutions to impending crises around the world.

Leaderships’ genuine commitment to universal freedom promoting economic and social progress would channel the youth from terror recruitment to university enrolment taking ownership of the respective national goals.

Most importantly the privileged status to the powerful in politics, economics and social domain has created a culture accepting corruption and abuse of power to prevail shielding the implicated members from judicial proceedings for willful negligence and wrongdoings resulting in national devastation.

Social polarization is distinctive in political establishment and elitists’ defiance to legal consequences on unethical conduct ordinarily enforced upon mainstream population.

Democracy is meaningful when equality concept transforms into reality.

The pain and suffering endured from 9/11 has many dimensions a decade later with ground zero memorialized honoring the deceased and the brave rescuers pledging their life to save others during the critical hour of need.

Also extending heartfelt condolences to mournful residents in the recent Delhi blast with prayers for renewed hope and strength leading to peaceful existence.

Those volunteering in terror act must understand that taking life in return for political or ideological reason is counterproductive and exacerbates human relations.

Life is a gift to be cherished and not violated.

Non-violent means deliver outcome without compromising credibility in a pragmatic approach to life.

Peace to all

Thank you.
