Global Pandemic and China

Padmini Arhant

The corona virus SARS-CoV2 transformed into global pandemic continues to consume lives affecting millions worldwide with a catastrophic impact on every domestic economy producing aggregate effects on the global economy. The pandemic caused health disaster and economic collapse is immeasurable.

The corona virus(COVID-19) genome SARS-CoV2 identified as such by China and scientific community gaining rapid human to human transmissibility that was initially denied by Chinese authorities in Beijing and endorsed by World Health Organization at the outbreak onset is on the record. Furthermore, the travel ban that was critical to prevent the spread of the virus was also rejected in the earlier days by Beijing and WHO stating the virus posed no threat to humans and the world need not be alarmed in that respect. Again these are public statements from Beijing and WHO even after the virus explosion in Italy, Iran and South East Asia.

Although Beijing dispute the origin of the virus, the infection starting in Wuhan, Hubei Province in China and the Wuhan Institute of Virology located mere 300 feet from the wet market are factual data. The latest confirmation on SARS-COV2 virus genetic alteration research showing characteristics in correlation with the virus adaptability in humans affected in the current pandemic doesn’t appear to be a coincidence. No matter how these findings and new revelations are circumvented, at the end of the day the virus origin and source emerging from Wuhan, China is incontrovertible.

China’s virologist Shi Zengli referred to as the bat woman apparently for her prolonged study of corona virus in bats having become unavailable soon after the viral eruption now suddenly appearing following scientific determination on possible viral leak from Wuhan lab to defend indefensible position on all issues in Wuhan Institute of Virology and handling of the cataclysmic event quoting politicization of science perhaps at Beijing’s behest is a weak argument. The authorities in Beijing having ignored the lapses in the P4 lab and Wuhan Institute of Virology settings brought to attention by United States embassy in Beijing in January 2018 with little or no precautionary measures including secrecy on experiments in Wuhan lab directly concerning humanity cannot be slighted as sheer politics especially when the world is experiencing insurmountable health and economic crises due to the pandemic.

In fact, the authorities in Beijing had politicized the corona virus right from early detection in Wuhan until today letting that evolve into a pandemic crossing international borders and territories rather than allowing science, medicine and public health experts to address the problem there and then when it actually occurred in Wuhan, China.

Furthermore, Beijing’s aggressive tactics forcing medical professionals and scientists including virologists in Wuhan Institute of Virology to abscond from the scene while silencing whistleblower Dr. Li Wenliang to death bare evidence to Beijing’s hard line policy toward own population in Wuhan and rest of China.

Notwithstanding Chinese Communist party leadership politicizing SARS-COV2 known as COVID19 from the get go until now barring access to international experts in the assessment of virus origin and source.

There is no doubt that collaborators on experiments conducted in Wuhan lab facilitated and funded by those in Europe, United States and other western nations with fair knowledge about China’s political system granting carte blanche authority to China’s leadership without proper oversight in place on the operation, methods and various undertakings in Wuhan Institute of Virology share responsibility for resting decisions exclusively to China.

In general, science explorations into future assuming to protect humanity from potential health and survival hazards such as pandemics, the involvement without any preparedness for untowardness jeopardize humanity endangering lives and livelihoods prevalently encountered in the corona virus mass infection. Regardless, science bear serious responsibility and propriety to avert consequences snowballing beyond control like the present pandemic.

Beijing turning the tide against global citizenry, the corona virus victims either succumbed to the deadly virus or fighting the pandemic in the health and economic front exacerbate situation. Instead, Beijing extending full cooperation for an independent investigation and inquiry into SARS-COV2 i.e. COVID 19 cause and catalysts without political meddling from anywhere would substantiate any claims one way or another besides setting precedence to prevent pandemics in the future.

The corona virus detected and treated in Wuhan, China as far back as October 2019. However, Wuhan epidemic brought to world notice only in late January 2020 with lockdowns imposed in late March this year.

Political angle to the pandemic is the health calamity downing healthy economy coinciding with United States Presidential election year in 2020 when Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) has long been engaged in corona virus experiments since 2009.

On the global response to pandemic – the lockdowns in the absence of any prevention or cure to the highly infectious corona virus reportedly effective per public health officials and governments though not without economic costs and in many parts of the world drastically affecting the poor, fragile and the most vulnerable in health and economic terms largely attributed to financial constraints, insufficient resources considering demand surge in medical supplies and little or no economic relief from governments in certain economies leaving population to deal with hunger and lack of facilities amid extensive shelter-in-place order.

The migrant workers in different countries share a common problem and that was being stranded in locations without ways to support them and their families especially with the layoffs and no income forcing them to return home. In India for example, the migrant workers lost their lives in preventable causes of death and many from starvation, heat exhaustion and accidents in the course of long journey by foot back home covering as far as 1,500 km or more. These tragedies were avoidable had the migrant workers been able to leave earlier by available means of transport prior to lockdown with the central government giving adequate time rather than spur of the moment decision confining them to congested settings defeating the purpose of social distancing and close contact.

The extended lockdowns would be feasible had the governments made provisions to supply food and essential services including financial assistance to cover the entire period with factories and regular working conditions shut down in the wake of the pandemic. The easing of lockdowns based on local authorities reports on pandemic effects in their areas and accordingly setting guidelines for gradual reopening would be the initial steps towards economic revival. Any drastic measures always leads to undesirable outcome. Citizens on their part maintaining self-discipline in personal hygiene stated earlier like washing hands and feet, sanitizing commonly used surfaces, allowing 6 feet distance avoiding  personal contact when outside, monitoring personal health to remain healthy and active are all necessary to combat virus and keep illnesses at bay.

Now on China’s policy in mainland, Xin Jiang province, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Tibet, Nepal, India, South China Sea and other territories facing the Communist Party’s authoritarianism is a matter of grave concern. China’s rise to economic power status is a consolidation of local population hard work, global consumers contribution and western powers overarching privileges granted to Communist Party in Beijing contradictory to western stance on communism and socialism imposing sanctions against other nations lasting over decades typically enriched China’s politburo members and multinational companies representing the top 1% in global society.

Hong Kong – Beijing agreed to Hong Kong’s autonomy under one country two systems recognizing the island as an independent territory with own legislative assembly, rule of law, judiciary, trade and economic relations with the rest of the world including China on autonomous basis until now. China’s broken promise in the introduction of national security law defining pro-democracy movement as extremism and going further in labeling any future attempts on democratic rights as terrorism and sedition is clear human rights violation for a nation presiding over the same issues from other parts of the world as a permanent member of United Nations Security Council with veto power. China’s  contradiction in this respect is a serious flaw beckoning Beijing authorities unconditional acknowledgment of Hong Kong’s autonomy. China honoring the residents democratic rights is the path to peaceful resolution on Hong Kong independence.

Similarly in mainland and Xin Jiang province, China – Beijing’s crackdown on non-violent political dissidents in mainland and Uighur Muslims plight in the supposedly autonomous Xin Jiang province has attracted international condemnation with situations only deteriorating as time goes by with no hope for freedom of speech. In Uighur Muslims’ case, the internment camps enduring torture and all sorts of abuse denying foreign press any access to view their conditions in isolation tarnish China’s image. The fundamental changes beginning with individual rights, political freedom, freedom of press and other basic human rights in every aspect are imperative for real progress in China.

Taiwan – Beijing asserting rights over sovereign Taiwan as China’s territory falls under the same category as territorial annexation by force. Taiwan is an independent nation with democratically elected leadership, President Tsai Ing-Wen having been re-elected to second term in office. Taiwan’s status as a free democratic state is a long standing position that cannot be subverted under threat or political intrusion.

Tibet – the Buddhist nation though regarded an autonomous region under China, the reality is otherwise. Tibet was once an independent nation that was aggressively invaded and taken over by neighboring China. Tibet has an elected government in exile formally referred to as Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) headed by President Lobsang Sangay, the lawful democratic governing body to govern Tibet. Beijing’s claim on Tibet is inexplicable. Tibet independence from China is quintessential for the latter’s interpretation of autonomy with sovereign statehood. Tibet was a free country. Ever since occupation in 1959, the Tibetan population are subject to enormous suffering with culture and civilization completely wiped out under China. Time for Tibet liberation from People Liberation Army (PLA) and Beijing’s control in China ending the decades old sovereign subjugation.

Nepal – the proud Himalayan nation at the foothills of the highest peak Mt.Everest, the heavenly abode of God Shiva with Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Gautam Buddha is unfortunately landlocked between  China and India. Nepal is compelled to contend with wanton skirmishes and territorial seizures considering authoritarian leaderships in both China and India sharing common aspirations especially towards neighbors regarded weak and vulnerable. Nonetheless, Nepal possess abilities to deal with challenges in the shadow of holy heritage, the majestic Himalayan premise.

India –  China having previously annexed approximately 38,000 sq.km Aksai Chin in Ladakh and reportedly entered the region across the Line of Actual Control (LAC) recently surrounding India in all directions from west in Ladakh,  north and northeast viz. Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Assam and,

In south, reports confirm China having seized the island strip in Indian territory off Maldives in Indian Ocean pouring millions of pounds sand in preparation for submarine base are significant encroachment and invasion of foreign land, in this instance India. China and India have been drawn into warfare earlier in 1962, 1967…and were at the brink of escalation in Doklam border standoff near Bhutan in 2017. These incursions and invasions characterize China’s hegemony against Nuclear India and other neighbors in the region. In other security issues related to India, China’s empathy to Pakistan based terror networks extended when China was the only country among the 15-member UNSC to have opposed the ban on Jaish-e-Mohammad chief Masood Azhar despite the terror group’s terrorism against India.

China carried out these activities while Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted the Chinese Premier Xi Jinping on several occasions reminiscent of Gujarat days when the former Chief Minister entertained Chinese investments in Gujarat and all over India upon assuming office as Prime Minister. India’s trade deficit with China is $57.4 billion per public data given opaqueness on both sides of the government in revealing the latest figure. India’s earlier trade surplus $3.9 billion against Hong Kong reversed into $2.7 billion trade deficit in 2018 following Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visits to India.

China has consistently been the beneficiary against India accessing Indian market in trade and economic deals. In return India received China’s military interventions via troops deployment covering all sides of the Indian territory. Additionally, China’s overt and covert operations in north eastern states luring Indian citizens to Beijing’s economic incentives laden with political agenda are some of many omissions on the Indian government oversight.

Chinese leaderships decision on immediate withdrawal of troops, artillery and military assets from the current positions within, near and around India is paramount and remains the determining factor for China’s recovery from internal economic turmoil, pandemic containment and political turbulence in Communist party politburo.

China has the opportunity to alleviate unnecessary tensions with India. The two nations as ancient civilizations has much to benefit from each other in mutual growth and development that inarguably requires trust and reliable partnership without any surprises such as the ongoing border intrusion and military posturing in the Himalayas and across Indian boundary in the region.

The elephant and dragon dance is possible upon the dragon, the mythical character in ancient legend renounce emitting fire endangering self and all around. On the contrary, the elephant existing since time immemorial worshipped in Hindu, Buddhist religion and offshoots proved priceless in living and beyond for many attributes is testimony to peaceful co-existence in the habitat.

South-China Sea – the increased clashes in international waters between China and ASEAN countries viz. Vietnam after the Vietnamese fishing boat drowning linked to China’s interception, Malaysia reportedly confronted by China near Malaysian oil rig facility, Philippines intimidated by China restricting local fishing and availing marine resources in archipelago. Japan has long standing territorial dispute with China over Senkaku Islands dispute, or Diaoyu Islands dispute respectively. Tiaoyutai Islands is contested between China and Taiwan.

Needless to say United States patrol in South China Sea unwelcome and perceived as interference by China in the overall international collision in Asian waters.

The nations worldwide burdened with pandemic originating in Wuhan, China enforcing economic shut down has inflicted phenomenal losses that are irreversible in terms of fatalities, a staggering 388,000 and still rising and 6.6 million affected right now from the deadly virus cannot be written off as benign incident. The pandemic generated humongous economic liabilities depriving billions from livelihoods and driving businesses into insolvency is historic and expected to prolong over a period of time until economic revival and sustainability.

The global citizens as prime consumers of Made in China goods and services are naturally frustrated and feel betrayed by Beijing and World Health Organization’s joint lapses and malfeasance in withholding facts and numbers on the virus victims at the start of the pandemic.

Beijing might succeed in winning favors from certain governments, organizations, multinational companies and those willing to appease China’s Leaderships at any level.

The average citizens as retail buyers buying goods manufactured in China instrumental in China’s economic empowerment hold the key to Beijing’s present and future.

Hence, China’s political, economic, strategic, military and social transformation conforming to individual freedom, free speech, free press, civil rights, democratic system, open free society within China towards own people and Hong Kong citizens aspiring democratic values with self-governance, independent Taiwan, Xin Jiang province, Tibet and all others enunciated above in South and South East Asia, South Pacific and the rest of the world are no longer a choice but an obligation to rebuild China and the global economy.

China’s seismic shift in political and strategic evolution accepting democracy, respecting human rights, neighbors sovereignty, territorial integrity and above all transparency and trustworthiness in all dealings is the only way forward to earn global citizens confidence and approval.

China’s economic prosperity ascribed to free market enterprise in the global economy venturing into mainland invigorated meteoric rise. The political and strategic reforms in China’s system is long overdue for positive exchange in relations severely compromised in Beijing’s rattled response to COVID19 and economic ramifications.

Beijing’s reconciliation and rapprochement with India and neighbors in South China Sea would renew ties boosting economic progress amongst all.

China’s engagement with United States and western powers is a complex relationship. China positioned as a major creditor financing and servicing western economies. The trade war with United States alongside China as the manufacturing hub for United States mega corporations is an inter-dependent economic chain link with lingering mistrust and mendacious malfeasance overwhelming at certain times like currency manipulation to gain export advantage and leverage foreign currency reserves and at present the corona virus corroded the benefit of doubt against China.

United States recent steps against China are motivated by the latter’s inconsistency in meeting expectations with inherent deficiencies in mutual cooperation and understanding on many issues from economic strengths to intellectual property rights that are contentious requiring considerable revisions and renewed measures for a fresh dependable transparent trade alliance.

In conclusion, China’s awakening to twenty first century reality represented by generation within the country, Xin Jiang Province, neighboring Hong Kong, Tibet and Taiwan for independence leading to a democratic society with freedom, political rights, individual liberty to elect government through ballots not bullets, honoring the will and wishes of nations seeking respect for their sovereignty and territorial integrity, abandoning hostility for harmony with all nations in the region and world wide is the only way forward to establish meaningful and universally acceptable transition that guarantees trust, peace and fulfillment on obligations and commitments.

Thank you.

China – Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

November 12, 2019

China – Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Padmini Arhant

China’s OCD is related to illegal invasion, occupation of foreign land  viz. TIBET adapting colonial counterparts disorder in addition to repeat violations of neighbors i.e. sovereign nations territorial integrity via aggressive annexations and encroachment of land near and far.

China’s OCD is enabled by regional governments and authorities especially Indian government’s weakness to personal flattery in gifts, pseudo awards and honorary titles presented in the form of bribery to gain collusion in foreign influence and exertion of authority in not only Indian affairs but also in asserting regional dominance in the Indian sub-continent.

Accordingly, citizens in India, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka dealing with China’s consistent territorial land and river grab need to adopt this potent strategy as they cannot expect their governments to do anything since governments are run by foreign diktat and installed as puppet regimes to execute their lofty economic and political aspirations of foreign superiority reviving colonial era.

Citizens anywhere frustrated and concerned about China’s policy in Tibet, Hong Kong, regional and global matter could be instrumental in rejecting MADE IN CHINA goods and services as well as products manufactured in China by major Corporations ignoring China’s human rights abuse and blatant territorial disputes whether in Indian Sub-continent or South China Sea with Japan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Philippines…to name a few reminding not only China anyone with imperialists ambitions to renounce subjugation, oppression and Superpower syndrome.

China’s economic status predominantly made possible by global consumption of MADE IN CHINA goods flooding international markets depriving ordinary citizens in developed and developing nations employment and business opportunity experienced in the past three decades facilitating China’s acceleration as dominant emerging economic power which in return exercised by China for illegal access claiming entitlement on foreign land and territories at will besides denying political freedom to citizens in China and the so-called autonomous states Hong Kong, Tibet and long contested Taiwan.

United States ongoing trade war with China is nothing more than a farce. United States having granted China Most Favored Nation (MFN) Status up until now by democrat and republican administrations as well as US Congress alike primarily in adherence to corporate lobbying to set up manufacturing base in China has led to China’s affluence in financing United States economy as one of USA’s major creditor holding upper hand in negotiations and the hyped TRADE WAR between the two equally spoilt economic defaulters at global expense.

China as a World Trade Organization (WTO) member along with enjoying veto power in defunct UN Security Council amid several privileges in various international body and institutions override China’s communist political platform that otherwise remains the bone of contention for globalists against Caribbean nation Cuba enduring economic sanctions lasting more than half a century for being a Communist remnant and similar impositions against socialists governments like Venezuela, Bolivia and many others in Latin America.

In other words, the global oligarchy presided politics worldwide tolerate Communism in politics as maintained by China which is not per definition of Communism as one might think such as distribution of wealth and power amongst all in the nation. In fact China in semblance with former Soviet Union, the authority anchored on concentration of political power amongst core members in China’s Polit bureau declining any hope for Chinese population within China to acquaint themselves and participate in real rather than symbolic republic status.

Global oligarchy have no problems with China’s Communism with the latter accommodating the former in economic front via foreign investments in China’s economy transforming China into global manufacturing hub regardless of labor force exploitation within China, environment slight by corporate giants and importantly the price paid by world labor force witnessed in rising unemployment in many economies and local export businesses deeply hurt in the process.

Unfortunately, expecting China to be a fair trading partner is wishful thinking as China is a known and an established procrastinator in this regard. China’s recent and past performance linked to arbitrary currency management for disproportionate self advantage as the least expensive import destination for western and many developing economies is a fundamental flaw aiding China’s insurgence in other critical economic concerns ranging from copyrights and patent infringement to technological innovations piracy escalating cyber warfare are merely the tip of the iceberg.

Interestingly, the outlook on US and China relationship as fierce economic competitors with demands on both sides to ease tensions in a way is paradoxical considering the dependency on each other with United States long been serving as China’s most favorable consumer market due to consumer buying power even in the toughest economic times unlike for example India’s huge population perceived as potential market for consumer goods that are hard to achieve given India’s present economic situation and Indian government failure on economic recovery.

China on the other hand is the multinational corporations desirable manufacturing base that compromise on labor wages, environment regulations and many relevant industrial compliance having direct impact on human survival and ecological sustenance.

The quid pro quo between oligarchy and China’s central authority flagrantly disregard domestic and foreign labor force plight causing hindrance to developing and industrialized nations’ economic growth representing the consolidated consumer market in the globalized economy.

Western perception of China as threat to their imperialist domain is a result of western policy benefiting China in many aspects with key factors enunciated above beginning with exempting China in every respect from political, economic, environment to technological circumventions that are otherwise dealt with western powers’ favorite decision viz. economic sanctions and diverse incursions against other nations generally presumed fair target.

Again this is western powers – both EU and United States common ideology typically falling in obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) symptom in producing and fostering archetype at humanity’s cost then later justifying their indulgence through military interventions or terror sponsorship prevalent in the Middle East and throughout world to topple governments and regimes initiated and promoted by them.

As far as China’s ongoing irritant trade, sovereign territory infiltration and trespassing in neighboring Nepal, occupied Tibet, Indian North East and elsewhere must be contained and every citizen possess this inalienable right to deter existential danger to them and their national sovereignty.

The most effective of all would be to ban CHINA products and services sending a strong message to corporations that the ultimate right to determine the corporate and political empire rise and fall remains with the end consumer.

Chinese authorities are urged to respect neighboring nations sovereignty and international laws demonstrating China’s maturity and ancient civilization values to win trust of those treated as weak and vulnerable not necessarily without protection as the prosperity of anyone rely on progress of all around not the selective few.

Thank you.

United Nations – Litmus Test

August 31, 2017

United Nations – Litmus Test

Padmini Arhant

The United Nations General Assembly scheduled on September 2nd assuming a new role in the event of UNSC dissolution is critical for the organization poised as an international body.

United Nations with 186 countries as members is headed by key powers nominating their representative as Secretary General rather than the position filled through election by member states considering the international forum expected to preside over global matter unlike the trend until now.

UN annual assembly featuring world leaders’ speeches on common issues besides relevant problems concerning them and their region is the standard format. However, the resolutions to crises are few and far between. Any attempts in this regard suffer setbacks due to obstacles from those against such measure.

The urgency to end conflicts in Syria, North Korea, Yemen, Iraq and Libya…lack political will and initiatives despite massive humanitarian toll, refugee crisis, health and environment hazard from terror sponsorship in Syria, Iraq and Libya while provocative military drills in Korean Peninsula inviting response from North Korean authority.

Not to mention starvation imposed through illegitimate sanctions affecting vast number in the country dealing with such irrational move.

The sources behind ongoing warfare and tensions declining to cease aggression towards nations targeted for economic interests and strategic dominance are primarily responsible for unwanted skirmishes and bloodshed in the regions undermining those nations sovereignty.

Any terms and conditions in disputes would normally apply to all sides for peaceful settlement. The party involved in incursions of a sovereign nation blaming the other and at the same time continuing with military exercise or backing terror outfits as the case may be rejecting international rules and civil engagement forfeit the right to objection to any response from the states bound by national defense.

The provocateurs unwillingness to refrain from activities whether military operations in Korean peninsula, illegal occupation and invasion in Afghanistan or terror manifestation in the Middle East exacerbate situations threatening world peace and security.

United Nations legitimacy is largely dependent on ability to function withstanding pressures, threats, incentives and influence having been the norm since inception to maintain international status quo. The UN concept as an international society is yet to be established with aspiring members unable to enroll and represent their cause and people oppressed by those exerting control over the organization.

Accordingly, United Nations effectiveness is based on implementing the following actions in the upcoming session.

Syria – Ending Syrian conflict with cessation of violence and terrorism. The states in opposition to peace and renouncing terror would clarify motives and inevitably deal with consequences like the ones experienced in the past and present.

Afghanistan – UN vote to end foreign occupation and complete withdrawal of U.S. and NATO troops including private contractors, intelligence agents and operatives from the war torn nation is imperative.

North Korea – The withdrawal of United States base in recognition of Korean nations sovereignty allowing dialogue and diplomacy between South and North Korea to take precedence is paramount to ease frictions in Korean Peninsula. Again, insisting on prolonging strains with military instructions and preparations would only result in defeat and unnecessary confrontation.

Yemen – United States, Israel and allies enabled Saudi intrusion in Yemen producing casualties and widespread disease like cholera could no longer be a Yemeni problem. The termination of bombing and shelling in the North African nation is an immediate requirement to let Yemen emerge from persistent decimation.

Palestine – United Nations General Assembly vote to bring Palestinian plight to conclusion by declaring Palestine statehood is pertinent not only for Palestinians in beleaguered Gaza, West Bank and Jerusalem i.e. occupied Palestine but also verify UN authenticity and effectiveness to act on long standing Middle East issue.

Tibet – Similarly the independence of the Himalayan nation from the People Republic of China annexation deserves attention and recognition of sovereign statehood in addition to membership as a separate country in the UN.

Taiwan – Independent status to be acknowledged as the Far East nation is a UN member.

Sri Lanka – The nation to offer equal rights barring segregation and disenfranchisement of Sri Lankan Tamils in the island nation. The other alternative is full autonomy to Tamil majority provinces to compensate for hard line government policy leading to human rights violation and denial of equal opportunity.

Myanmar – UN to vote on Rohingya Muslims citizenship rights as naturalized inhabitants of the country providing relief to Rohingyas abandoned by global community.

Kashmir – The entire population – both majority and minority rights, purging terror from across the border, demilitarization on both sides in India and Pakistan, independent investigations of abuse on all fronts, granting easy access without bureaucracy interference for citizens to travel for medical treatments and civilian government addressing the needs of all not just the preferred demography is to be promoted and executed to guarantee citizens safety and security in the valley.

Pakistan – Baluchistan and Sindh province grievances cannot be neglected as an internal affair with growing frustration among locals in these territories facing many difficulties jeopardize potential for peaceful coexistence in South Asia.

Likewise, the citizens in Africa, Latin America and indigenous groups subject to civil wars, foreign interventions disrupting political and economic stability and atrocities respectively are to be resolved in a fair and just manner to justify UN embodiment of peace and unity.

Failure in this respect would confirm United Nations power or the lack thereof and perhaps create the requisite for new global platform where all nations regardless of size and stature would contribute to the decision-making process on equal footing eliminating hierarchy.

Finally, the entities outrage at hate sentiments expressed in the organized rally in Charlottesville, Virginia is contradictory given their complacency and participation in genocide in the region and other parts of the world.

Hate and discriminatory practices against any not just the selective few must be condemned without reservations as that would exemplify genuine intolerance to prejudice prevalent towards race, religion, ethnicity, culture, socioeconomic and educational background.

Humanity served to benefit all is the path to sustainable peace and success.

Thank you.

China – Interview with China’s President Xi Jinping

May 12, 2015

By Padmini Arhant

The audio version is available in the above link. The interview is conducted in Mandarin (Chinese language) with simultaneous English translation. Please click on the audio feature above.

President of the People’s Republic of China, The General Secretary of the Communist Party of China and the Chairman of the Central Military Commission.

Hello! Mr. President.

Welcome to the public domain. Padminiarhant.com

Thank you for inviting me.

Let me begin with China’s Title.

1. Q. Is China the People’s Republic?

Ans. China is stated as the People’s Republic.  However, China is governed by Communist Political bureau.

2. Q. How is China positioned in the 21st Century?

Ans. China is the emerging economic power and a major creditor to the United States and EU. China is also a global exporter with trade relations in every region. As permanent member of UN Security Council, China is equal partner in the P5+1 exclusive club.

All things considered, China also represents hegemony in undermining peace and stability.

3. Q. Where does China stand on territorial disputes with neighbors, the issues remaining contentious and escalating tension in the region?

Ans. Although, China is not in direct confrontation with any specific nation, there are skirmishes on the borders and international waters – South China Sea in particular attracting world attention.

4, Q What is the reason behind disagreements in this matter?

Ans. China is an integral part of hegemony sharing similar goals in maintaining economic and strategic dominance.

5. Q. Isn’t China’s policy forcing developing nations in the region to increase defense budget and facilitating United States permanent military base?

Ans. China and United States positions are favorable to the military industrial complex. The incursions are intended to proliferate arms deals including nuclear capability.

6. Q. China’s invasion and occupation of Tibet, China declining recognition of Taiwan as independent nation, the political unrest in Hong Kong, China’s claim on Indian States of Arunachal Pradesh, Ladakh and Aksai Chin in Kashmir, Maoists infiltration in India and Nepal clarify China’s imperial traits to control region.

What makes any nation think they can rule other states when providing for their own people is a major challenge?

Ans. Invasion and occupation of land is signature act of imperialism. Japan and China are historically imperial powers in the region. China’s territorial expansion is the continuation of trend in modern age. China’s hegemonic ambitions conform to UNSC P5+1 legacy.

7. Q. China’s relation with the United States is based on economic inter-dependency with China’s investment in U.S. Treasury Securities and United States granting MFN status to China.

However, there are other issues like currency adjustments contributing to trade imbalance, intellectual property rights violations by China and United States engagement in cyber attacks and standoff in Korean Peninsula as well as East and South China sea are few among several feuds that cannot be ignored now or later.

What is China’s proposal to the existing undercurrent in the relationship with United States and should the world believe the rivalry as a matter of concern?

Ans. China’s economic and military strength is formidable. Nonetheless both China and United States are partners and represent hegemony. The lingering mistrust is a result of two dragons vying for prominence.

8. Q. North Korea ties with China evident in China’s assistance in enabling North Korea – the nuclear state. Yet, China voted for sanctions against North Korea recently despite economic sanctions adverse impact on the people.

Similarly China’s arms supply to various factions in Africa in exchange for oil foment civil wars paving way for former colonizers to recolonize the continent. Such activities suggestive of hegemony pact for free access to African resources at the population expense.

Is China a reliable ally?

Ans. China is no different from other imperialists as we are poised to benefit ourselves in legitimizing illegitimate policy worldwide.

Whether China is a reliable ally or not – history is testimony to the fact.

9. Q. China led bank Asian Investment Infrastructure Bank (AIIB) conspicuously a spin off from Asian Development Bank luring United States allies confirm the concept cloning World Bank, IMF, ECB etc.

Why are the nations in North Africa and Middle East pledging support to improve Asian infrastructure rather than Africa?

Ans. Hegemony has many manifestations and China is one of them. World Bank, IMF, ECB, ADB and alike ill reputation are the reason behind AIIB emergence to prolong business as usual.

10. Q. China ‘s human rights record witnessed in Tiananmen Square and arrests of political dissidents besides crackdown on Uighurs in Xinjiang province, persecution of Tibetan monks and desecration of Tibetan heritage are common events.

As head of the state and Communist party chief, do you contemplate on reversing decadence to providence?

Ans. China’s human rights matter is in political interest. The communist doctrine is in semblance with hegemony ideology – i.e. to preserve concentration of power within core structure.

Furthermore, communism is an invention then to promote prevalent feudal system under the guise of republic.

China’s President Xi Jinping – Thank you.

Peace to all!

Thank you.

U.S. China Relations and Global Impact

January 20, 2011

By Padmini Arhant

Hon. President Hu Jintao of China is currently on a state visit to the United States.

The head of the state arrival in the U.S. is pivotal to promote bilateral relationship on economic, political and strategic matter having a direct global impact.

Many issues have been brought to attention that requires mutual understanding and cooperation. The economic reality with United States as the largest consumer and China being the major manufacturer as well as creditor are inter-dependent to succeed in their respective ambitions.

China is the fastest growing economy with tremendous potential to be an effective global partner in resolving international crises.

Although the dialogue between the two nations in strengthening ties has been consistent in the past two years, the intentions are yet to be delivered in action on the domestic and international fronts.

The preliminary step towards fostering simultaneous growth is to review the activities and modify strategies beneficial to both economies with equal responsibility to contain the burgeoning economic crisis.

At present the huge anomalies in surplus and deficits between China and the United States is contentious and attributed to trade imbalance, fiscal and monetary policy variation besides incoherent business practices hindering investor confidence on economic returns.

China’s currency devaluation and other grievances such as intellectual property rights infringement, U.S. corporations’ access denial to fair market share are potent in the existing undercurrents that could be mitigated if not eliminated through acknowledgment and appropriate decisions.

Concurrently, the United States bears the burden to revive domestic economy centralized on job retention and creation along with national debt reduction to offset economic disparity.

While measuring economic status between China and the United States on per capita income – it is true that United States compares better than China due to the disproportionate population ratio.

However, the 13 percent poverty rate for the United States as a developed nation signifies the widening gap between the rich and poor in wealth distribution. This situation is largely contributed by politics undermining economics with no regard for national consequences.

Reiterating the earlier statement that balance of trade conversely enhancing economic prospects is critical in the competitive global environment.

With respect to strategic alliance on Iran and North Korea – China’s defiance in the U.N. Security Council against Iran and passivity on negotiations with Korea apparently frustrating the United States.

Similarly, the United States reaction via naval drill with South Korea on the Yellow Sea and response to Iranian civil nuclear program contrasting the Vietnam deal is perceived by China as provocative and U.S. double standards.

The facts confirm the power politics and self-interest on both sides escalating turmoil in the region.

Again the solution to stalemate in foreign policy agreements is the permanent membership expansion at the U.N. Security Council.

United States endorsement of India and assurance to Japan in this context qualifies as rhetoric given the status quo.

The Security Council extension representing each region detailed previously on many occasions could be effective in addressing various global problems.

Reluctance to accept pragmatic remedies reflects the desire for dominance in the constantly evolving economic and political dynamics.

Shifting focus on U.S and China – the recognition on travel and tourism, educational and cultural exchange is relevant and further commitments are commendable.

In humanitarian issues – U.S. is faced with Guantanamo Bay, mercenary operatives in the war zones like Iraq and Afghanistan, renditions, habeas corpus, military aggression instead of economic and social development, cited in coup d’état and political unrest in Latin America, Africa, Middle East…and notably the leading arms supplier in the world.

Notwithstanding environment abuse witnessed in oil spills and rescinding environment regulations to appease energy industry.

China’s impressive economic progress and environmental pursuit in the new millennium are overshadowed by the prevalent political system entailing:

Human rights violation against the people of China

Suppression of democracy

Imprisonment of Chinese dissidents

Failure to curb human trafficking and organ extortion in and from China.

Interference in foreign nations’ visitor protocol – example United States and India.

Music, Movies and Software piracy reported by entertainment and technology sector.

Arms supply to Africa.

Aiding ethnic cleansing in Sri Lanka.

Promoting tension between Pakistan and India on Kashmir.

Territorial dispute with India and incursion in the northeastern border concerning the Indian states Arunachal Pradesh and Ladakh.

Refusal in acknowledgment of Taiwan’s sovereignty.

Forging defense and economic partnership with the dictatorial regime, the military Junta in Burma.

Declining support in the global financial regulations on tax havens used by corporations.

And

The illegal invasion and occupation of the independent nation – Tibet subjecting

Innocent men, women, children and the Buddhist Monks of Tibet to persecution.

Systemic eradication of Tibetan culture.

Desecration of the Tibetan shrines and Buddhist religion constituting sacrilegious in the highest order.

It is clear that both nations share guilt and glory in the contemporary era.

Their phenomenal accomplishments made possible by diverse resources most importantly the valuable human capital not adequately provided for and evident in immense hardships endured by the vast majority in the relatively affluent societies.

The industrialized and emerging economies could supplement one another in harmony rather than acrimony. Subsequently utilize the combined prosperity to uplift other developing nations seeking economic and political guidance.

Collective participation is vital to overcome global challenges like epidemic from communicable disease, natural disasters, environment protection, economic recession and international security.

It is in the best interests of the two illustrious nations to work together and reconcile differences to attain reciprocal economic gains.

Naturally the long lasting peace between the two militarily strong nuclear nations rests on building honest and trustworthy partnership now and in the future.

Best Wishes to U.S. China relation for a new beginning with hope and tranquility permeating across the globe.

Thank you.

Humanitarian Challenge

February 27, 2010

By Padmini Arhant

Recently there was a flurry of criticisms and admonishments for the article titled “His Holiness Dalai Lama in Spotlight,” and the earlier ones related to the,

“Iranian Theocracy cracking down on pro-democracy protestors and the inflammatory rhetoric against Israel.”

Alternatively, the Israeli authorities’ oppression of the Palestinians in Gaza and West Bank.

Likewise, social issues regarding human rights violation –

Self-interest and greed reflected in the globalization v. protectionism including,

The article on the racial attacks against the Indian students and other immigrants in Australia, scorned for the delivery and the condemnation of discriminatory practices.

Hence, it’s important to clarify the difficulties surrounding when addressing social injustice of this enormity.

Needless to emphasize that it’s much easier and less distressing to discuss non-controversial issues related to the economy, environment, travel, food, entertainment…etc.,

However, when the social injustice is concerned,

Whether it’s about the denial of equal rights to the gay community,

Women’s rights,

Burgeoning Health care crisis in the absence of a universal health care or a public option,

Students plight with the rising educational costs,

Growing economic disparity,

Or,

On a serious level – The invasion and occupation of foreign lands through wars,

Nuclear proliferation,

Slighting human rights over economic opportunities,

Double standards in the terrorism definition,

Ignoring environmental warnings…all of which draws immediate attention from the critics representing the specific agenda.

Prior to moving forward with the discussion, it’s necessary to accept the bestowed honor for being compared with the canines by the critics.

As an animal lover, particularly the canines, I consider the comparison – a true compliment.

The reason being, the canines are known for their unconditional love, loyalty and protective instincts towards their owners and the families. They are also well regarded for their intuitive nature.

Due to these extraordinary characteristics, the canines have earned the title as “Man’s best friend.”

Although, sometimes it’s worth posing the question if the man deserves a best friend in a canine.

Similarly, the attacks through innuendoes and nuances seen against the articles on atrocities that were presented with evidence, are intriguing.

Cynicisms vary such as the articles meeting the “critics standards” attributed to the guardian or the ‘Almighty’ out of fear as the case might be and phrased as the ‘Brisk walk.’

While, the so-called ‘inappropriate berating’ of the human misconduct selectively ascribed to the “off-leash” canine, apparently not accustomed to the ‘city lifestyle.’

It beckons the argument on whose side is, these city slickers as the “judges” and “critics” on, when the articles on the website are invariably factual and visuals supported, portraying the systemic degradation of humanity at every level.

If the presentation or the style is the issue, then it’s worth remembering that the art of diplomacy and sophistication is at its best in a dialogue with the virtuous free of vices and that being envy, ego, pride, prejudice and greed.

Moreover, the offenders condemned in these articles are no missionaries or monks in the monasteries.

Instead, they are individuals as well as powerful authorities deliberately and conscientiously engaged in killing and mass murder of their own population, specifically the oppressed minorities.

Economic opportunists causing immense agony and misery for humanity through deceitful and deceptive actions.

It appears that any one daring to highlight the inherent omission of fairness by the corporate owned networks and the political figures’ evasion of responsibility on vital national issues like health care, financial reform, environment are declared ‘reprehensible’ by their representatives.

The double standards in the first amendment act as found in the terrorism definition among the critics are attention worthy.

When the articles on this website raise genuine credibility issue against the major corporations and their political allies, not excluding the foreign governments’ human rights activities, the news outlets are instantaneously used by the mighty and the powerful to warn the legitimate substance or comment as “off-limit,” in a democracy.

On the other hand, the constant vilification of the “progressives,” the “liberals,” anyone defending righteousness and the most favorite of all,

The religion of Islam and its followers…by the Fox news presenters viz. Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity and Bill O’Reilly, not barring the radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh are,

Permitted as ‘free speech’ parlance with an exclusive right to trigger violence, hostility, anger and fear mongering.

Even if the extreme provocation leads to untoward incidents like the death of DR. George Tiller of Wichita, Kansas,

The green jobs advocate Van Jones’ resignation and,

Last but not the least, the recent anti-government groups promoted “terrorist attack” by Joe Stack against the IRS building in Austin, Texas.

Despite the track record, when the White House contemplated to exclude the Fox news in the press conference, the entire news media and the leading news organizations deemed such action as objectionable.

Only if the mainstream media like CNN, Fox News and others had placed the former administration under President George W. Bush and the Vice President Dick Cheney in spotlight with tough questions on the Iraq war, akin to the ones posed to His Holiness Dalai Lama, it could have led to a favorable status quo.

Humanity’s response to the Prophets / Messiahs, the Political leaders and the Peace activists thus far has been,

Lord Jesus Christ crucified.

Prophet Mohammad ( May peace be upon him) diminished in status as an alibi by the pretentious followers of Islam like the terrorist network Al Qaeda and others, Iranian Theocracy and the dictatorial powers in the Middle East.

The Holy Buddhist Temples in Afghanistan desecrated by the Taliban forces.

Holy Islamic sites under siege by the Israeli authorities in the disputed Hebron.

Hindu Temples attacked in Kashmir (Indian and Pakistani side) by the Pakistani fundamentalist terror groups.

President Abraham Lincoln assassinated for ending slavery.

President John F. Kennedy assassinated. President Kennedy was a vocal critic of the secret society and the military industrial complex.

Mahatma Gandhi assassinated for the peaceful effort to unite Hindus and Muslims.

DR. Martin Luther King assassinated for civil rights movement.

Egyptian President Anwar Sadat assassinated for signing the Israel-Egypt peace treaty.

Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin assassinated for the peace initiative and signing the Oslo Accords pertaining to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

On an optimistic note, the universal peace mission might have been successfully thwarted by the anti-peace factions for centuries,

Nevertheless, the reversal is imminent in the immediate future.

Thank you.

His Holiness Dalai Lama in Spotlight

February 23, 2010

By Padmini Arhant

His Holiness Dalai Lama was a guest at the CNNs Larry King Live show on Monday, February 22, 2010.

During the interview, the host Larry King stated,

“Most Americans do not want the United States relationship strained with China over Tibet’s independence.”

Interestingly, Mr. Larry King did not provide any specifics like who exactly these Americans are, the pollster name and details for authenticity.

Such position could not be from the mainstream population given the fact that by and large American people are samaritans and strong believers of democracy including human rights for them and others.

That being the case, it makes one wonder –

Like everything else is Made in China, if the questionnaire for this interview was possibly,

Prepared by China or Beijing’s representatives in the United States due to the provocative and insensitive questions posed in the interview.

Should a major international network like CNN compromise on substance to boost rating?

As for the alleged statement cited by the CNN talk show host, the anonymous individuals prioritizing economic opportunities over Tibetan people’s freedom cannot be living in the,

Land of the Free, Home of the Brave.

More likely, they belong to the – Land of the Narcissists, Home of the Hypocrites.

The people of the oppressed nation, Tibet may not necessarily be the strongest ally of the United States for whom the latter poised as the leader of the free world would not undertake risks against the invader and persecutor, the Communist China, like it did in 1991 –

When the U.S and allies waged war against Iraq in retaliation to Iraq’s President Saddam Hussein’s invasion of a comparatively small kingdom, the oil rich Kuwait,

Or for that matter,

Threatening to wipe out (Obliterate with nuclear weapons- the rhetoric during Presidential campaign) anyone harassing the nuclear armed Israel, the United States surrogate partner in the middle east despite Israel prominently established as the Neo-Imperialist in the region.

Is freedom a natural right and an entitlement for the privileged while remaining a fantasy for the weak and defenseless?

What would be the twenty first century like in the absence of the following events?

The women’s suffrage movement leading to the women’s vote in the United States of America.

If, President Abraham Lincoln had not ended slavery.

A young civil rights leader DR. Martin Luther King daring to dream a world without prejudice.

If, a resilient leader Mahatma Gandhi had failed in the non-violence principle to free his nation from two hundred years of colonialism.

Creating the state of Israel in OId Palestine amid Arab disagreement in the aftermath of holocaust.

The fall of Berlin wall and Eastern Bloc nations set free from the former Soviet Union.

Liberation of South Africa from the brutal apartheid.

Likewise, Independence for the small island nation East Timor -after prolonged tyranny and massacre.

Emancipation of human beings is not up to free individuals or the oppressive authority to decide whether the enslaved are eligible for liberty or not.

Reiterating the earlier message – All living beings are created equal and born to be free.

The people in Tibet, Palestine, Iran, North Korea, Myanmar, Afghanistan and the nations in Africa, Middle East, and Latin America are no exception to this natural rule of law.

No military might and economic power can continue to suppress the freedom of the population for their false sense of political superiority.

His Holiness Dalai Lama for diplomacy sake could seek autonomy rather than independence for the persecuted and tortured six million Tibetans on account of Tibet’s economic dependency on China.

China’s communist politburo decline political freedom and economic opportunities for long oppressed Tibetans in the Buddhist land.

However, India and South Africa would not be independent had they been abandoned under similar notion that the fate of the several millions are better off as the oppressed minority in their domicile.

Every tribe, community and society has leadership potential to guide and govern the people irrespective of the economic and educational status.

It’s an innate quality provided by nature and commonly seen throughout the animal kingdom.

Because of human greed to amass wealth and territories poignantly,

China – In spite of being third largest nation by total area and the second largest in land area, Beijing authorities insist on retaining Tibet, Xinjiang province, annexing Taiwan and currently eying on neighbor India.

Furthermore, the Chinese Communist rule conspicuously reining in on the most powerful nation, the United States transformed into a subservient economic debtor through unfair trade practices.

Not barring the Most Favored Nation (MFN) status, WTO membership and veto power in the UN Security Council consistently abused by the Communist nation at any given time.

Again, the United States and allies biased treatment of other communist nations is noteworthy.

Cuba and North Korea are incessantly subject to economic sanctions for a variety of reasons ranging from human rights violation to the nuclear standoff.

On the other hand, China, the ultimate communist authority with gross human rights violation and utter disregard for international rule of law is granted immunity based on the emerging economic power status by the democratic nations.

United States lacking in political will and corporations with investments in China are pressuring media to evade democracy depriving the people of Tibet the political freedom.

Then the real power – the people as consumers from all walks of life across the world should prove that the political and economic stakeholders can no longer determine the destiny of human beings.

Worldwide boycott of Made in China goods along with investments withdrawal from the state controlled Chinese holdings by humanitarians, democracy and peace seekers for all contrary to the selective few could lead to the beginning of the end of the communist rule in China and elsewhere.

Not long ago, in the latter part of the twentieth century i.e. during the cold war, the former Soviet Union was formidable opponent of the United States.

Lo and behold, the iron curtain dropped astonishing the rest of the world in marking the end of the repressive rule.

History is testimony to the fact that the rise and fall of empire and emperors not attributed to honorable surrendering of power or the oligarchs’ magnanimity but instead the voice for democracy within and outside oppressed nations have enabled the political transition.

With an inevitable freedom for the people of Tibet, Palestine, Iran, Myanmar, North Korea and others, the optimism will prevail over the lingering insecurity among the authorities and their proxies in the political and economic domain.

Caring, compassionate and peace activists from around the world must stage a non-violent protest and display solidarity in the freedom movement for Tibet, Palestine…the only hope and a guaranteed victory towards democracy for these nations.

Finally, the consumer power always succeeds against any economic and political power.

Thank you.

People’s Republic of China – Domestic and Foreign Policy

February 19, 2010

By Padmini Arhant

There is an inherent danger in the hybrid economies with the state controlled capitalism conspicuous in the Google – China controversy with the hackers in China infiltrating the Gmail user accounts.

Having been threatened by Beijing recently, I can relate to the incident.

Hence my message to Beijing is:

I remain steadfast in my commitment to the humanitarian cause and strongly condemn the Communist nation’s following actions:

Human rights violation against the people of China,

Suppression of democracy

Imprisonment of Chinese dissidents

Failure to curb human trafficking and organ extortion crimes in and from China.

Interference in foreign nations’ visitor protocol – example United States and India.

Harassment of foreign investors in Chinese soil,

Patent law and Copyrights infringement.

Music, Movies and Software piracy.

Currency manipulation to gain export advantage against the United States and the rest of the world.

Arms supply to Africa,

Aiding ethnic cleansing in Sri Lanka,

Promoting tension between Pakistan and India on Kashmir,

Territorial dispute with India and incursion in the northeastern border concerning the Indian state Arunachal Pradesh.

Refusing to acknowledge Taiwan’s sovereignty.

Forging defense and economic partnership with the dictatorial regime, the military Junta in Burma.

Non-cooperation with international community on Iran and North Korea nuclear standoff.

Abuse of the U.N Security Council permanent membership.

Declining support in the global financial regulations on tax havens used by corporations.

Disregard for the COP15 Copenhagen environmental accord.

And the most reprehensible crime against humanity being –

The illegal invasion and occupation of the independent nation – Tibet

Innocent men, women, children and the Buddhist Monks of Tibet subject to tyranny and persecution.

Systemic eradication of Tibetan culture.

Desecration of the Tibetan shrines and the Tibetan Buddhist religion constituting sacrilegious in the highest order.

It’s important for the Chinese leadership to understand that economic prosperity without freedom is analogous to the bird with clipped wings locked in a golden cage.

Sooner than later the caged bird would set itself free as all living species are born to be free.

Individuals with authority fail to understand that no matter how mighty and powerful one might be –

All things must end for a new beginning in compliance with the natural law.

Thank you.

Obama Presidency – State of the Union Address

January 27, 2010

By Padmini Arhant

On the eve of the first State of the Union Address by the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama, the media frenzy with opinions and speculations preceding the important event is not uncommon.

President Barack Obama is scheduled to address the nation and the rest of the world about the administration’s efforts and achievements in the past twelve months and the commitments moving forward.

The past week political and legal outcome has created anxiety and genuine concern among the people and some lawmakers in Congress.

Although, the political consultant based in Washington D.C. echoing the ‘K’ street sentiment by presenting oxymoron analogies would like this development downplayed, the truth of the matter is the high court decision embolden the prevalent corporate dominance and enhance the opportunity for the legislators to either remain or return to power regardless of their detrimental performance in public service.

Assailing the facts as ‘hyperventilation,’ a spin that undermines democracy when the elections are swift boated with the Corporations, Unions and religious institutions’ influence, is rather naïve if not ignorant.

Amid dismal forecasting of the Obama Presidency, the rationality beckons a fair analysis of the Obama administration’s accomplishments and errors since their election to the White House.

President Barack Obama was sworn into the office on January 20, 2009.

State of the Economy:

The former President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney administration left the White House on January 19, 2009:

United States FEDERAL BUDGET – WIKIPEDIA, THE FREE ENCYCLOPEDIA

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_federal_budget

Deficit and Debt Increases 2001-2009 … to a total debt of $10.6 trillion as of January 2009. …

For the first time in FY 2008, the U.S. added $1 trillion to the national debt. …

Then bipartisan Congress approved taxpayer spending on two simultaneous wars in Iraq and Afghanistan by allocating $1.05 trillion up until September 30, 2010.

Source: http://costofwar.com/

Total cost of wars since 2001 until date – $954 billion and rising

Spending on Iraq war – $704 billion and Afghanistan war – $250 billion

In addition, the Bush-Cheney administration Wall Street bailout that included insurance giant AIG, Mortgage lender Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, major banks and the auto industry in 2008.

Title –Bush Stimulus Package

Total – $1.557 trillion i.e. $1 trillion and 557 billion dollars.

Source: The United States Labor Department

Unemployment Rate in January 2009 – 7.6 percent with 11.6 million Americans out of work.
————————————————————————————————–
Reality Check: By Padmini Arhant

With that being the actual state of affairs, the Obama administration initiative towards jumpstarting the economy was passing a stimulus package to benefit the average Americans and the small businesses worst hit in the economic recession that started in 2002 but acknowledged by the republican members and the Bush administration in December 2007.

Economic Stimulus: $787 billion Passed in February 2009 without any vote from the Senate and a single vote from the House of representative among the Republican minority.

Having previously voted for the Wall Street bailout to AIG and the TARP fund under Bush administration in 2008, the republican members refrained from assisting the American workers and families in the Obama stimulus package in 2009.

Obama Administration Stimulus Funding:

$787 billion economic stimulus package for job creation and tax cuts to help average American workers, families and small businesses.

$275 billion mortgage stimulus program aimed at saving troubled homeowners from foreclosure.

$30 billion bail out to AIG (in addition to the $150 billion Bush administration bailout to the insurance giant in 2008) to avert the conglomerate collapse.

$1 trillion “toxic asset” buyout program designed to get under-water assets off the U.S. banks balance sheets and facilitate the credit flow in the market to help small businesses, first home buyers, home owners refinancing as wells as the medium corporations in retaining jobs.

At the end of March 2009, the Obama Administration gave automakers General Motors and Chrysler another $22 billion in low-interest loans to protect the manufacturing jobs.

In June, the Obama Administration gave General Motors another $30 billion to help them steer through bankruptcy.

Total Obama Stimulus Package – $2.1 trillion dollars – $2 trillion and $144 billion dollars, of that $1 trillion relates to “toxic asset’ program.

It’s noteworthy that the subprime and hedge fund activities accompanied by various Wall Street speculative gambling happened on Bush-Cheney administration and the republican majority watch i.e. 2000-2006 and the recession had already been well under way, even though they refused to take responsibility.

2000 – 2006 the republican members controlled all three branches of the government.

The legislative i.e. both the House and the Senate, The executive, a.k.a. The White House and the judiciary branch.

During that time, the Bush-Cheney Presidency was preoccupied with the wild adventure in Iraq that commenced in 2003 under the pretext of WMD, the weapons of mass destruction that turned out to be Work of Mass Deception.

Again, the Bush-Cheney administration and the republican members were focused on the Halliburton, the oilfield service corporation and its subsidiary, the Kellogg Corporation’s prosperity by neglecting the U.S economy and the brewing global financial crisis.

When the same republican Congress and the Bush administration decided to accept the financial debacle and the economic crisis in December 2007, it’s a year after the democrats gained majority in the House of Congress with the selective news network and the republican members blaming the democrats for the economic crisis.

Shifting attention to the year 2009 -2010, the Obama administration and the democratic Congress passed the necessary legislations to stimulate the economy and devoted much of their time towards the historic health care reform.

President Obama and Democrat Congress Accomplishments:

Economy –

– Salvaged the global financial markets from the brink of collapse,

– Extended unemployment benefits to help families survive the massive layoffs,

– federal tax credits to first home buyers that decelerated the crumbling housing market,

– Stimulus funding generated jobs for the veterans and the green technology projects.

Education and Arts:

Provided College Students relief by shifting the unaffordable student loan payments from the private industry to non-profit organizations.

$787 billion Stimulus Package included –

Federal funding to boost K-12 education supplementing the state budget crisis across the nation.

Federal funding to preserve arts and cultural science.

Health Care Legislation – A phenomenal feat by the democrats in the Congress and the White House, despite the existing resistance from the health care industry to block the legislation.

Poignantly, the milestones in the health care legislation reached without any republican votes in the Senate and again may be with an exception of a single vote from the House of representative.

Average Americans across the nation shared their harrowing experiences from the health care industry abuses and pleaded with their representatives for a universal Medicare and save American lives – approximately 45,000 dying every year due to denial and the lack of health insurance.

Besides, the members of both political parties were well informed on the burgeoning health care costs contributing to the national deficit, an issue that has been squarely attributed to the democrats by the republican members while forgetting their own legacy to the American taxpayers, the accumulated $10.6 trillion, the wars, bailouts…cited above.

Energy and Environment:

The Copenhagen summit in December 2009 is a huge disappointment.

Nevertheless, there is an opportunity in the remaining term to accomplish the desirable goals.

President Barack Obama’s domestic environmental actions surpass the expectations in the first year.

Source: Environmental Policy – San Jose Mercury News, January 19, 2010 – By Paul Rogers

“The economy, war and health care are dominating discussions about what he has or hasn’t accomplished.

Yet with little notice from the public, Obama has been steadily rewriting a major area of American policy – the environment – from global warming to gas mileage rules, logging to endangered species.

Many of his initiatives have particular impact on California.

Obama on the Environment:

Increased gas mileage standards for cars and light trucks 40 percent, to 35 mpg by 2016.

Signed a bill establishing 2.1 million new acres of federally protected wilderness, the largest such bill since President Bill Clinton signed the Desert Protection Act in 1994.

The bill bans logging, mining and road building on federal forests and deserts in nine states, including portions of Joshua tree and Sequoia national parks and ancient bristlecone pine forests in the eastern Sierra.

Announced tougher new national smog standards from the EPA this month i.e. January 2010.
Issued EPA rules requiring large U.S. ships to cut soot emissions by 85 percent.

Blocked Bush administration rules on offshore drilling and endangered species protections.

Begun a process in December in which the Environmental Protection Agency will, for the first time, restrict the amount of greenhouse gases industry can release.

Directed more than $50 billion in funding and tax credits for renewable energy projects.

“This is by far the best first year on the environment of any president in history, including Teddy Roosevelt,” said Carl Pope, national executive director of the Sierra Club, in San Francisco.

“Most presidents have done their best environmental work late in their term. This is very very strong opening.”

Democratic Congress and White House Administration errors requiring correction:

Domestic Policy: By Padmini Arhant

Passing legislations in the partisan atmosphere is a daunting task in itself.

Both the White House and the democratic Congress have not been meticulous in the policy implementations such as,

Banks bailout approval without any stipulations.

Oversight and accountability on the stimulus funding slighted by the financial industry.

Failure to reserve actions against banks’ non-compliance in easing the liquidity crisis and the housing market revival.

Resisting pork barrel or earmarks in the stimulus funding to negate the opposition and the selective media hypocrisy.

Recruiting the faulty economic team otherwise known as the Wall Street oligarchy –

The Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, the economic adviser Larry Summers and now backing the Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke for a second term, much against the main street protest is a tremendous political liability.

Further, the team members were the head of the respective institutions that led the economy to a near free fall and arguably viewed by the general public as the lobbyists for the financial sector.

Job creation and protection – It’s been slow irrespective of the stimulus programs and is the primary cause for losing the recent elections.

It could be recovered by offering tax cuts to deserving corporations preserving jobs as opposed to exporting jobs overseas.

Incentivizing manufacturing sector by reviewing trade and commerce law.

Embracing protectionism over globalization is necessary to promote domestic jobs, thereby confirming the White House and Congress priority for the American people over the overseas financier, China.

Regulations and reform in the finance, health care and energy sector is paramount for the present survival and future growth.

Foreign Policy: By Padmini Arhant

Haiti disaster fund $100 million by the administration is commendable but news reports regarding the U.S military presence overwhelming the rescue and relief operation was alarming.

Remarkable improvement in the U.S. and Russian relationship particularly in the dialogue related to conventional stockpiles and nuclear arsenal reduction treaty.

The 64th U.N General Assembly session in September 2009 – Smart approach to discuss nuclear non-proliferation even though nuclear disarmament is the ideal path towards global peace and security.

G-20 meeting in April and September 2009 was a success and progress dependent on pending U.S financial reform.

April 2009 – $1 Trillion Stimulus Package – G-20 World Leaders Stimulus

The leaders of the 20 most powerful countries in the world (representing 85% of global economic production) convened in London and agreed to $1 trillion in economic stimulus funds, as well as tighter global financial regulations.

Environmental – COP15, Copenhagen Summit – A failure.

There is hope to realize the environmental scope in the 2010 and future global summits. The environmental pursuit must begin with the U.S climate bill legislation to gain credibility in the international forum.

Domestic issues like economy, health care, debates surrounding the troops increase in Afghanistan and national security have consumed most part of the 2009 and overshadowed the prominent world crises.

Pakistan – Financial aid to advance socio-economic development is a positive step as long as the funds are invested to alleviate the population plight and educate the children in the rural and urban areas. Drone attacks have caused many civilian casualties justifiably triggering anger and frustration among the local victims.

Military aid and the deployment of the private mercenary viz. The Blackwater a.k.a.Xe Services LLC and alike to eliminate the terror networks is a contentious issue to be discussed in length later.

India and Pakistan – The United States’ position to disassociate from the talks reveals political expediency.

Iranian crackdown of the democracy movement and defiance in the nuclear program – A cautious reaction and response by the United States arousing passion among the allies and the adversaries.

Worsening Israeli and Palestinian conflict – Jewish settlements, blockade and occupation continue to derail peace prospects and fomented by the United States adherence to the prior administration’s foreign policy.

The controversial three-dimensional wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and Yemen via military and intelligence intervention will be elaborated in the later segments.

Containing the saber rattling – North Korea launching missiles, a tradition maintained since the former Bush-Cheney administration. Multilateral talks are vital to curb North Korean President Kim Jong Il’s erratic behavior.

Postponing the meeting with his Holiness Dalai Lama and accepting illegal invasion and occupation of Tibet as part of China in an effort to appease the major creditor – A diplomatic trend serving none and blatantly condones oppression, a diametric stance for the world’s first democracy.

Honduran Military Coup – A setback reflecting the flagrant U.S foreign policy towards Latin America complicated by the republican members’ rendezvous with the military coup leader Roberto Micheletti.

Darfur Genocide – President Obama’s interference was refreshing and requires intense pressure on the Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir to end the massacre entirely.

Burma – The Burmese junta extending the pro-democracy leader, Aung san suu kyi’s house arrest and exploiting the forthcoming election with false declaration to release the leader by November 2010 is bound to attract international interest.

Unrest in Sub-Saharan Africa – Guinea – The U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton appropriately condemned the violence and the message should resonate in other parts of the world for the United States to be received as the reliable negotiator in peace process.

Performance Assessment and Future Role: By Padmini Arhant

President Barack Obama and the democratic Congress have demonstrated leadership in dealing with the humongous challenges inherited from the previous administration on the economy, war, national security and neglected issues pertaining to human life i.e. health care and environment.

Regrettably, the White House and the democrat Congress have not utilized the political capital earned from the historic election and the weaning public support especially among the independent voters stems from the promised ‘Change,’ not being delivered with Wall Street reining control over Washington and the substantial bailouts not producing the anticipated economic recovery.

Other factors like transparency and accountability are perceived to be in coherence with the earlier administration’s discreet policy, avoiding the free press and media, thus providing fodder for the critics.

In foreign policy and war on terror – The administration policy is viewed as Bush-Cheney policy in the international main street specifically in the most vulnerable regions of the world.

President Barack Obama seeking bipartisanship with a cabinet offer to the Republican Senator, Judd Gregg of New Hampshire to serve as the U.S Commerce Secretary was turned down.

Similarly, the White House invitation to the republican members for their input in the economic stimulus went stone deaf with criticisms volleyed against the President and the democrats for the economic stimulus package.

The President and the democrats’ bipartisan outreach have been futile, for they are doomed either way among the republican members who can’t find any common ground to agree upon any proposal.

In light of the status quo, the Congress members are obligatory to the American electorate rather than their colleagues in the House and the Senate or the Wall Street.

Creating jobs and restoring confidence among the consumers, investors and taxpayers is the inevitable victory against any form of opposition.

Negative attacks and distortions will persist. Maintaining a strong disposition and determination to succeed are the key characteristics when facing obstacles on the path.

Moving diligently with the legislations on financial reform, health care with a public option and concentrating on the climate bill will prove the inherent courage in the Presidency and Congress members to fight for the people and the nation.

Ultimately, in a democracy the power lies with the people as voters, consumers, taxpayers and shareholders.

Among the members in the society – Effectively, it’s better for different groups supporting a common cause to pool resources and present them as one voice against any powerful force during the elections and legislations.

For instance, the various environmental organizations should consolidate ideas and act together to defeat the industrial threat to the planet.

Likewise, the average citizens should join together as a resilient force to represent democracy during elections, and rally behind the President and the party that is dedicated to the public and not the private or personal interest.

The United States has a unique opportunity to rebound in all aspects and emerge from the present crises under the leadership of President Barack Obama and the democratic Congress.

People have endured and overcome many upheavals in the ‘Land of the Free and Home of the Brave, the United States.

President Barack Obama brought hope to many in this country and around the world in 2008.

People are the only ones who can bring about the ‘Change,’ they desire by electing the officials and the President who are willing to undertake political risks and protect the people’s rights in a democracy.

“Yes We Can,” did it in 2008 and “Yes We Will,” should elect the doers, the democrats to office in 2010 to complete the work began in 2009, the economy and health care…

I wish President Barack Obama and Congress members of both parties success in the legislative matter concerning “We the People.”

Thank you.
