Decisions on Life and Death Matter

November 18, 2010

By Padmini Arhant

Whenever there is tragedy in any part of the world, it severely affects the victims and their families. The recent building collapse in Delhi, India claiming an estimated 64 lives is regrettable and usually the poorest among all succumb to the worst natural or human contributed disaster.

The incident like many others is the reason for nations to prioritize capital investment in urban development with subsidized housing for the low income families rather than cluster bombs and life destructive defense deals with tax payer funds expended in warfare.

Warfare conducted for reasons beyond national defense is not subject to checks and balances. The relentless wars are even lacking in the economic concern considering the billions of taxpayer dollars funding approved with the net result being the casualties accepted as the collateral damage.

Public knowledge in ongoing warfare is usually based on media and news organization edited reports.

It is also well known that ‘Truth’ is the first casualty in war. However, the facts surface through courageous sources – whether they are investigative journalists, victims’ family or the war veteran themselves.

A powerful testimony is presented by none other than the honorable Iraq and Afghanistan war veteran Kevin Tillman – Also a brother and friend of yet another patriot and celebrated fallen Hero Pat Tillman.

Both Kevin and Pat Tillman had joined the U.S. Armed Forces in 2002 and served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Subsequent to Pat Tillman’s fatality in Afghanistan in 2004, Kevin Tillman is reported to have been discharged from the defense force in 2005.

The firsthand experience by the war veteran Kevin Tillman is a compelling and thought provoking narrative.

After Pat’s Birthday – Published By Kevin Tillman

“It is Pat’s birthday on November 6, and elections are the day after. It gets me thinking about a conversation I had with Pat before we joined the military.

He spoke about the risks with signing the papers. How once we committed, we were at the mercy of the American leadership and the American people. How we could be thrown in a direction not of our volition. How fighting as a soldier would leave us without a voice… until we got out.

Much has happened since we handed over our voice:”

Consequent to the war veteran Kevin Tillman’s disillusionment, perhaps there could be change of hearts and minds in the decision-making process on life and death matter.

The leadership executes power in the absence of strong democratic voice conspicuously inactive in the communication media with democracy becoming a formality than a reality.

Words cannot heal the wound but time and trust for a better tomorrow could make a difference.

I convey my sincere condolences to the victims’ families in the civilian and combat environment.

Thank you.

Political Irony in Republican Congress Victory

November 18, 2010

By Padmini Arhant

Bush Tax cuts Expiration and Preserving Social Security – The Republican members’ opposition to this issue is no surprise considering the campaign financing received during the November 2010 election.

However, should the consequences be the struggling majority bear the burden of the privilege to the top 1% in the society?

The earlier proposal offering permanent tax reduction to middle income families earning $250,000 or less and subjecting those earning more to the progressive tax structure on the residual income adequately meets the requirements in income distribution and deriving national revenue that could perhaps be applied to deficit reduction.

In fact, by passing the above prudent measure the Congressional members would be relieving the tax payers across the board from excess taxation and allow voluntary economic stimulus through consumer spending.

The Republican members’ gridlock in this legislation would derail the needful tax breaks to all deserving taxpayers in the tough economic times.

Regarding Social Security – The Social Security Administration Act introduced during Great Depression by the former President Franklin Roosevelt is a formidable economic policy that withstood turbulence and provided the safety net for millions of hard working American families in the retirement years until now.

Any attempts to jeopardize the only reliable income source would be catastrophic for the business and the government dependent upon the consumers and taxpayers to revive the economy.

Social Security is the fundamental protection for the vulnerable population in the increasingly volatile financial market resisting regulations and submitting to failures – the preferred short term strategy that led the global markets to a near free fall.

Citizens across the political spectrum are against legislation proved to be detrimental to their retirement savings through Social Security.

The legislators ignoring the republic request for personal and special interest might be dealing with repeat political outcome in the next election.

Therefore, pursuing economic policies that could endanger citizens’ survival is best abandoned for political reasons as well.

Similarly in Medicare and Medicaid intervention – the alternative course exacerbates the sick, the seniors and the poor people’s plight with the private health insurance costs exceeding the anticipated savings by eliminating the federal program.

When citizens are deprived of basic living standards, decent income and easily accessible health care, it directly impacts the entire society. The mid-term Republican victory pledged to improve American life cannot be achieved with business-as-usual practice in Washington and State Capitals conforming to the political irony.

The citizens’ active participation to block the counterproductive legislation on Bush tax cuts, Social Security and Medicare, Medicaid services are extremely important in a representative democracy.

Thank you.

G-20 Seoul Summit 2010

November 14, 2010

By Padmini Arhant

The G-20 Summit was held in Seoul, South Korea on November 11 – 12, 2010.

Among many important economic issues, the trade imbalances and currency devaluation had drawn the representatives’ attention.

The two leading economies – U.S. and China expressed concerns over the respective trade surpluses and deficits attributed to currency management.

Likewise, the U.S. Federal Reserve proposal to interject $600 billion for economic revival expected to weaken the U.S. dollar while strengthening exports was met with resistance from competing trade partners such as China, Germany, United Kingdom, Brazil…citing the undue advantages to U.S. in the overseas export market.

It is well known that China has benefited from maintaining renminbi under market value boosting its trade to different nations especially the United States due to MFN and the primary creditor status.

Accordingly, China’s trade surplus would be different when evaluated in real market conditions.

If United States were to pursue similar trend with Federal Reserve intervention then both economic powers would essentially contribute to trade anomalies with their trading partners across the globe.

The arguments on both sides are valid in terms of the policy’s impact on the individual and global economy. Arguably the importing countries, developing nations in particular would be drastically affected with cheaper exports flooding their market giving rise to trade deficits and inflation.

Balance of trade between nations enhancing mutual economic prospects is critical in the competitive global environment.

Therefore, the G-20 leaders’ general agreement on this issue to move toward market determined exchange rate systems deterring currency devaluation and exchange rate or capital flow volatility is a sensitive measure in dealing with trade or currency related disputes.

United States as a consumer economy with Germany and China being the export economy is another contentious issue demanding necessary adjustments to the disproportionate trading activities.

Further, U.S. economic recovery is vital for the global market dependent upon U.S. consumerism and offshore capital investments.

The advanced economies could perhaps share the burden with the United States by allowing imports from low income countries and entry to US manufactured high end goods in return for their shipment to US shores.

At the same time, U.S. targeting the emerging and developing nations for exports has a greater responsibility in adopting fair trade practices rather than free trade impositions such as NAFTA, DR-CAFTA…that is proved to be devastating for the vulnerable population in these regions.

The globalization concept is conspicuously embraced at the meeting with pronounced commitment to reject protectionism.

Yet, the irony is the trade and currency wars prompting decisions to stimulate domestic growth through local demand and supply as stated by China as well as the industrialized nations’ fervor to compete for national productivity unequivocally confirms protectionism.

Since the globalization era, the government and business focus has shifted from their domain to international markets as experienced in the United States that led to the manufacturing sector demise eliminating blue collar jobs and ultimately having a ripple effect on other industries especially the small business economy.

Additionally, the globalization woes were not restricted to the alarming unemployment in the United States and elsewhere. The financial sector deregulation for over three decades resulted in the worst hedge fund mismanagement nearly bankrupting the interlinked economies in the prevalent globalization.

As for the struggling economies, globalization through treaties deprived agriculture and small scale industries survival witnessed in Haiti, Mexico, other parts of Latin America and Africa.

Globalization is effective when trading between nations promotes economic growth for all unlike the purely profit oriented corporatization of developing nations for cheap labor and natural resources that mostly benefits the big corporations wielding power on the political systems.

Hence, protecting the agriculture, SME (small and medium enterprises), independent entrepreneurships is crucial for realistic economic gains and in achieving the UN adopted Millennium Development Goals.

In this respect, the G-20 Financial Inclusion Action Plan, the Global Partnership for Financial Inclusion and a flexible SME Finance Framework providing increased access to financial services and expanding opportunities for poor households and SME is praiseworthy.

Simultaneously, the IMF and World Bank elaborate coordination in assisting the national and regional economies is an important step to mitigate disparities and alleviate vast majority suffering.

However, the G-20 assurance translated into action could significantly improve the economic standards of the rapidly deteriorating middle and low income groups in the global society.

The G-20 strategies for the finance industry with a new financial regulatory framework comprising instruments and practical tools to avert the repeat erroneous undertakings,

Notwithstanding the oversight and supervision amid several preventive adaptations with financial assistance is a formidable structural reform.

Besides the macro prudential plan on fiscal, monetary, economic and trade policy to expedite economic and job resurgence would be comprehensive in addressing the universal challenges emanating from the complex global transactions.

The debate on deficit control and economic stimulus programs reflected the stark contrast positions across the Atlantic with Europe’s preference to slash national debt through austerity and U.S. reliance on deficit spending.

Although both methods are relevant in debt reduction and economic growth acceleration, extreme measures are counterproductive with an inevitable setback in the desirable objectives.

Adopting moderate course to obtain steady growth and deficit decline would guarantee the anticipated outcome.

Poignantly, France pension legislation passed despite the overwhelming public disapproval based on the bill’s detrimental effects is representative of mandatory implementations without due diligence not to mention the utter disregard for the republic financial security and personal well-being.

France government action to safeguard the minority interest at the majority plight is a misplaced priority exacerbating rather than resolving the economic situation.

Unfortunately, now the U.S. Congressional Republican members’ pledge to replicate the French authorities’ act by attacking Social Security and prolonging retirement age signifies a pattern designed to reverse progress.

American citizens across the political spectrum have a moral obligation to defend the retirement savings through Social Security. The elected officials attempt to jeopardize the only reliable source of income would drive the economy to the point of no return.

Regarding climate change – The G-20 affirmation to safeguard the marine environment is notable but the unwillingness to renounce fossil fuel use poses an impediment in combating global warming.

The unanimous clean energy application throughout the world is the only alternative to life sustenance on the planet.

By and large, G-20 scope to limit risks in the financial sector, stabilize the global financial markets, build a job generating economy, narrow the development gap, eradicate corruption, facilitate modern infrastructure are among the impressive immediate aspirations.

G-20 future meetings could broaden the aspects by specifying the programs in fighting hunger and disease through food distribution and affordable health care at the national and global front.

The political and business leaders’ consortium to recognize failures and devise constructive policies is commendable at the G-20 Summit.

Cooperation and sincere involvement for greater good would enable the G-20 nations in delivering the promise to the world.

Good Luck and Best Wishes to the honorable world leaders in reaching the milestones on global peace and prosperity.

Congratulations! To South Korean leadership on the successful G-20 summit hosting.

Thank you.

Veterans Day – Remembering the War Victims and the Armed Forces Sacrifice

November 11, 2010

By Padmini Arhant

On this important day we remember the brave hearts who volunteered to sacrifice their precious life for their nation and humanity at large.

The cherished freedom would not be possible without the selfless dedication of the young men and women in uniform who willfully offer their service for national and global security.

However, war should never be an option against peace and diplomacy. The simultaneous wars in different parts of the world today have claimed many innocent lives including casualties suffered by the duty bound armed forces in the battle grounds.

It has resulted in enormous pain, grief and agony for the victims’ families all around.

Besides, the economic liability from the relentless wars is exacerbating the national deficit for the U.S and the global economy.

Only if the funds were instead invested in social and economic development the terror recruitment would substantially decline allowing peace to dawn on the war torn regions.

Although many are reminiscent of the past victories and argue about the necessity to go to war for territorial conquest or eliminating authoritarian rule,

They also forget that independence, civil rights and many humanitarian goals were achieved through peace and non-violence by the venerable leaders.

The lesson from history is to pursue peaceful means i.e. constructive dialogue and meaningful strategies as preventive measures than adopting military options.

Violence begets violence and is not the ideal response to belligerence. The incredible loss of life during war cannot be resurrected and nothing can possibly compensate the human tragedies from the horrendous war crimes.

It’s important for the world leaders to pause and deviate from the decisions to engage in war. There are no winners in war considering the inevitable bloodshed, carnage and destruction shared by all warring factions.

There is an urgent requirement for denuclearization and strategic arms reduction to ensure global security. Universal policy is imperative for the nuclear disarmament and conventional stockpile containment.

In other areas of warfare, the veterans and their families are often neglected despite their patriotic duty to the country.

Not all human beings can pledge their life to serve the nation in a combat environment and those who come forward to do so are uniquely honorable. Every one of these individuals deserves national appreciation for their tremendous contribution towards security, freedom and humanitarian deeds.

It’s important to maintain the federal run VA health care and rehabilitation programs for all service members and their families.

Further, the government assistance to the veterans’ families with housing, education and other social services are equally essential to help them cope with the economic hardships while their family members are engaged in active duty or otherwise. It’s the least any nation can do for the armed personnel deployed in various parts of the world.

Since the contemporary wars are conducted for reasons beyond national defense, the exorbitant military spending has taken precedence over critical life dependent programs for the vulnerable population in the society.

Sadly, in the materialistic world life is easily dispensable. The present is dictated in monetary terms and,

Profit is regarded as the Prophet.

Nevertheless, the world is still intact as there are great many humanitarians, unsung activists in every corner tirelessly devoted to improve life on earth.

On this day when the parents, young widows, widowers and orphaned children experience sorrow and pride in loving memory of their dear ones,

The nation acknowledges the armed forces and national guards’ significant sacrifices for others.

Thank you.

Iran Nuclear Program – U.S. NATO & Israel Military Strike – An Apocalyptic Mission

November 10, 2010

By Padmini Arhant

Nuclear proliferation is a global challenge in the twenty first century. The nuclear states hierarchy has contributed to non-cooperation in ratifying Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT).

The explicit nuclear threats exemplified by the prominent nuclear nations are largely responsible for the prolific nuclear quest.

Since the nuclear nations share equal responsibility in adherence to non-proliferation, the lack of fairness in the nuclear capability verification and the absence of universal treatment is the deterrent factor for the non-compliance among certain nuclear and non-nuclear weapon states.

Further, the ‘peaceful purpose’ concept through civilian program is a convenient avenue for some nations to advance their nuclear weaponization ignoring the inevitable serious ramifications.

Iran seeking nuclear status under such premise is a legitimate concern among the international community. Besides, Iran’s nuclear ambition could be detrimental for national and regional security.

In the increasingly insecure global environment, the nuclear threat is a potential cause for preemptive strikes and the opportunity readily available upon the Iranian nuclear weapon development.

Iran would essentially facilitate the imminent targeted attack by moving forward with the fissile material production or in accepting any nuclear deal considering the inflammatory remarks against Israel possibly used as circumstantial evidence and the Arab nations’ conspicuous reservations against Iran as the nuclear power.

Iranian authorities’ influence over Hamas, Hezbollah and the Iraqi Shia insurgents is well known and the speculative nuclear arms race in the Middle East following the Iranian nuclear armament could become the fundamental reason in the military operation against Iran unequivocally evolving into a recipe for disaster in the volatile region.

Given Iran’s extemporaneous nuclear undertaking the events leading to the military response would be catastrophic triggering a worldwide confrontation. The recent reports stated that the White House never ruled out the military option and the policy reiterated through the US State department.

Hence, it is in Iran’s best interest to terminate the entire nuclear activities effective immediately and allow IAEA inspection not only to meet the international requirement but also thwart the underlying inextricable military attack aimed at the Iranian nuclear facilities with a pervasive impact on the region and the rest of the world.

Iran is not in a position to procrastinate as the military strategy has been a work-in-progress and completely prepared for the appropriate time. Iran’s default would be self-endangering and devastating considering the ‘all options including nuclear warning’ has been the agenda in the long contentious nuclear dialogue.

It is imperative for Iran to realize that convincing the allies on the nuclear involvement as the sovereign right to nuclear energy and any decisions to pursue nuclear arsenal would precisely authorize the military intervention for the warring factions.

Moreover, Iran being the fourth major oil producer with an estimated 10% of the total global oil reserves, the civilian nuclear program arguably raises a credibility issue and declining access to the international monitoring agencies for assessment arouses suspicion implying the definitive expansion to a nuclear warhead in the discreet uranium enrichment.

Iran could perhaps end the nuclear program and consequentially the imposed economic sanctions that has created enormous trade restrictions affecting the national revenue especially investments for oil production.

It would clearly be a winning situation for Iran in renouncing the nuclear goals and most importantly prevent an apocalyptic occurrence with Iran being the initial casualty and originating point.

Hopefully, Iran would reconcile terms with reality and let rationality prevail over ideology.

Peace to Iran and the Middle East.

Thank you.

India-Pakistan Relations – Peace in the Indian Sub-Continent

November 8, 2010

By Padmini Arhant

In the last couple of days there have been many perspectives about India – predominantly expressing regrets, concerns and subliminal to scathing attacks for not embracing Gandhian principles in austerity and non-violence.

The specific reference was made against the rising Indian middle class and implied the Indian leaderships’ aspirations to be the leading economic and military power in the region.

The criticisms were largely directed at the hypothetical Indian Cold Talk and the alleged defense disposition presumably contributing to the nuclear neighbor Pakistan’s reluctance to withdraw troops from the Indian border for redeployment in the northwestern Pakistani territory to fight against the militancy.

Simultaneous statements supporting the critical assertions were issued by the U.S. military high command and the Pakistan-Afghanistan special envoy characterizing the non-existent Cold Talk as;

“A major threat undermining the US war in Afghanistan.”

These bizarre allegations deserve attention to dispel myths and widespread rumors intended to serve the divisive foreign policies facilitating the relentless war and arms race in the volatile region.

It is imperative to highlight the protocol ahead of the Presidential visit to India comprising two provocative US initiatives –

According to the reports:

Pakistani Army Chief Ashfaq Parvez Kayani was summoned to Washington D.C. by the White House and offered a magnanimous $2 billion military aid on 10/30/10, a week before the international voyage and subsequently,

The Pakistan’s army chief, Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, has been quoted as saying his defense posture is “India centric.”

Meanwhile, the US ambassador to India Timothy Roemer was delegated to push the American jet fighters and currently the proposal entails sensor-fused weapons or Cluster bombs and billions of dollars worth military hardware for potential use in the propaganda driven Pakistan-India confrontation.

Unequivocally, the United States recent decisions in the conventional and nuclear proliferation could be more devastating than India’s alleged militaristic ambition with the tremendous U.S. military pressure on India through the office of Presidency as the executive sales division to invest in defense weapons when the significant population in both democracies could benefit from investments in life sustenance than destruction deals.

Similarly, allowing the Retail giant Wal-Mart access to the Indian market is a political suicide given its deadly impact on small business economy. India’s vast majority survival is dependent upon entrepreneurship from street vendors to licensed small traders and family run business.

Wal-Mart arrival in India with its poor track record in the US employee’s exploitation and the Indian small businesses inevitable termination would lead to widening the gap between the haves and the have-nots ultimately backfiring against the incumbent Indian government.

With respect to India lacking in austerity – objectivity is a misnomer with the critics’ eagerness to appease the political establishment considering the domestic events such as the controversial US taxpayers funded unofficial London, Madrid trip…

Or

For that matter the three day Indian visit alone costing the US tax payers over $200 million a day.

As for India never inheriting Gandhian non-violence and evolving into an ambitious military power supposedly affecting the no-exit perpetual US war plan in Afghanistan and Pakistan;

How is it rational to offer Pakistan a $2 billion military aid rather than the desperately needed economic aid especially in the aftermath of the ravaging floods and the persistent drone attacks until now that has claimed thousands of innocent Pakistani lives under US operation?

Then on the other side, the Indian leadership arms twisted for defense contracts viz. the transportation items stripped of critical high end technology dumped on the Indian defense force draining the Indian capital reserves in billions of dollars that could otherwise be invested to save and protect millions of lives living in abject poverty.

The burden is now on the prodded Indian middle class to bear the life threatening defense and commercial ventures.

These symbolic detrimental actions by no measure conform to Gandhian or Dr. King doctrine.

Moving across to other International frontiers –

‘Obama Set to Offer Stricter Nuclear Deal to Iran’ is yet another seismic shift leaving the vulnerable Israel on the edge. Again this position by no means in adherence to Gandhi or Dr. King peace pledge alternatively the much touted nuclear disarmament during the political campaign.

The U.S. demand on India to appreciate Pakistan’s efforts on terrorism and declining to urge Pakistan to meet its end of the bargain in extraditing Mumbai terror masterminds,

Notwithstanding US default to handover the American terrorist David Headley represents the double standards that has long jeopardized US credibility in resolving international crisis.

Despite numerous terrorist activities against India originating from Pakistan, there were no military retaliation from the Indian side as falsely propagated in the so-called ‘Cold Talk’ unlike the Afghanistan war or the proxy war against Yemen in 2009 covertly conducted till date.

As stated earlier in the 10/21/10 article – India-U.S. Relationship and the Nuclear Deal published under International Politics on this website,

U.S. seeking business partnership with India is primarily focused on militarizing and nuclearizing the nation instead of reversing the trend to achieve the universal nuclear non-proliferation, the only pragmatic course to global peace and security.

In the same breath, accusing India as the growing military power in the region is political connivance misleading and instigating both India and Pakistan against one another in the same manner as Israel and Palestine are approached in the Middle East conflict.

Also explicitly denying India with the UN Security Council permanent membership is suggestive of political convenience and hypocrisy given the continuous MFN status renewal and ITO privileges to China that has been largely misused against none other than the United States.

India and the United States could forge better trade relations through civilian projects in other areas of economic benefit.

There are great opportunities in exchanging new wave technology, green sector orientation, and educational programs among many economic aspects.

It would contribute to the urgently required job growth in the U.S. with India benefiting from the advanced high end commercial agreements in non-defense aviation, heavy machinery and equipment to modernize the manufacturing sector.

Besides the multitude prospects in infrastructure improvement and construction are guaranteed to provide mutual gains.

The U.S. and India being the democratic societies could exemplify the common goal for peace and social-economic progress beginning with;

A commitment towards robust environmental policy,

Ratifying the CTBT, NPT and FMCT in concurrence with other nations,

Not barring the ICBL – the international campaign to ban land mines and,

Cultural exchange programs fostering respect and appreciation for one another.

India and Pakistan on their part could come together by setting the manifested mistrust and political differences aside to resume bilateral talks focused on strengthening economic ties through trade, transportation and most importantly signing a peace treaty involving the nuclear renunciation for a peaceful Indian sub-continent.

Both nations share rich cultural heritage and the people across the border belong to one family with adopted identities separated by external political interference.

Therefore it’s essential for the nuclear neighbors to set precedence in becoming non-nuclear and accept one another as allies not adversaries.

Pakistan and Afghanistan population have shed enough blood from the violence with no end in sight.

The vibrant middle class in Pakistan could shape the nation’s destiny by participating in political process and prioritizing nation building. The Pakistani citizens across the religious, social and economic spectrum possess the key to Pakistan’s bright future.

Pakistan and Afghanistan progress is stalled due to foreign occupation and political meddling by sources not particularly interested in the regional advancement.

Certain Pakistan military and intelligence personnel have been instrumental in derailing the democratically elected governments albeit on corruption scandals,

Nevertheless the political instability has exacerbated the fragile economic conditions with unemployed youth and under educated mass in the rural-urban areas becoming the likely recruits for terror networks attributed to the foreign Para-military troops’ infiltration and unmanned drones producing many civilian casualties.

Pakistan could end the unmitigated violence through co-operation with India and Afghanistan working in harmony instead of acrimony towards each other.

There is tremendous hope for optimistic tri-lateral relations between the three neighbors – Pakistan, India and Afghanistan.

The people in all three nations look forward to unity and tranquility in the war and terror dominant South East and Central Asia.

People power is resilient and resourceful to overcome challenges confronting the nation.

Peace to the Indian sub-continent and the rest of the world.

Thank you.

Midterm Elections 2010

November 4, 2010

By Padmini Arhant

Congratulations! To the Congressional members from both political parties on their victory in the 2010 midterm elections.

The Republican members experience on November 2, 2010 is similar to the Democrats 2006 election results.

Regardless, all contenders deserve praise and recognition for their tireless campaigning in the political race.

The Democrats dedicated their valuable time and resources to improve American lives.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi, The House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Franks and other honorable Congressional representatives worked diligently and demonstrated commitment.

Likewise, the isolated Republican members’ contribution is equally valid in the legislative matter.

Welcome to the New House Speaker – The Hon. Rep. John Boehner.

Rep. John Boehner’s remarkable life journey to attain the American dream is admirable.

The Republican majority in the House beginning January 2011 have an opportunity to resolve the national crises.

Any solutions to the contentious problems are meaningless if they fail to address the average citizens’ plight and protect national interest over special interests.

Hopefully both sides will set the differences aside and work together in alleviating the main street struggles. Washington gridlock is the reason for the alternation in the Capitol Hill.

If the political parties cannot arrive at a consensus on legislative affairs, it defeats the purpose of winning elections.

There were many surprises and setbacks in the electoral outcome. Democracy being undermined in contemporary politics is not unusual and conspicuous during elections with corporate cash drowning the republic voice.

In other instances, candidacies unfairly targeted to settle political scores contributed to the elimination of veteran political figures with exemplary record.

Politics ignoring merits and rewarding misrepresentation is a travesty and a national loss.

The mandate is clear underscoring the republic rule – Washington is required to deliver the campaign promises and not a political rhetoric.

Unfortunately the tradition continues with any administration in the absence of real change causing public frustration and disappointment reflected in the electoral backlash.

Among many national issues, the economy is a primary concern with stagnant growth in the job market. Foreclosures, liquidity freeze… and other economic hurdles in the Housing and Financial sector are far from over.

There are many challenges ahead and now it depends on the Republican majority to coordinate with the Democratic minority in the House to prevail in all fronts.

Transparency and accountability is realistic when it is applicable to all – given Washington clout and Wall Street influence on the political parties.

The key industries monopoly on the legislation is the deterrent factor producing watered down reforms directly affecting the economic conditions and the national deficit.

In the environmental matter the California ballot measure – Prop. 23 successfully prevented the oil companies’ dominance and their polluting strategies. The action saved the rapidly growing clean energy sector currently providing 500,000 jobs.

The environmental organizations such as Earthjustice and several prominent groups along with committed supporters were responsible for the phenomenal intervention.

Synonymous steps by other states on public issues yielded the desirable change.

People power can never be underestimated in any form of government. Throughout history, political transformations, social and economic progress have been made possible by people movement exemplifying that ordinary citizens are capable of extraordinary achievements.

Therefore, if legislations are controlled by affluent sources empowered with the lack of political will in Washington then the citizens’ response – ‘change course’ is inevitable and effectively conveyed through ballots.

It is imperative for all factions to come together and consolidate efforts in leading the great nation forward. Nation thrives with prosperity accessible to all and not just the privileged members in the society.

Good Luck! To the newly elected Congress in reaching the anticipated milestones.

Thank you.

Mexico Massacre – Drug Warfare and Arms Trade

November 2, 2010

By Padmini Arhant

Mexico has been terrorized by the drug cartels with the civilian massacre rising by the day.

The drug warfare is taking toll on the innocent lives and draining the national economy.

The drug gangs target is not limited to the local population. As mentioned earlier the brutal killings of 72 migrant workers in late August at Tamaulipas state near the US border shocked the nation and escalated crossfire between the perpetrators and the security force.

Among the drug networks, the Zetas are considered the most notorious and ruthless having claimed responsibility for many gruesome atrocities across the country. They are also dreaded for the indiscriminate violence against the vulnerable population.

The Zetas are characterized as the renegade cartel wreaking havoc across the nation right now.

Their reputation in inflicting carnage and destruction ranks high in comparison to the splinter groups held responsible for similar crimes.

The Zetas have aroused interest and scrutiny leading to a new revelation.

According to the latest reports – the founders of the Zetas were extraordinaire Mexican troops and acquired training in the early 1990’s from Americas 7th Special Forces Group, also known as “snake eaters” at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina.

Apart from the navigational and communication skills, the training apparently involved the basic to extreme weaponry use such as machine guns and automatic firearms.

The US Defense Department former national director and Pentagon Special Forces commander, currently a professor at the US National Defense University, Craig Deare confirmed that –

“The Zetas are none other than the US trained Mexican Armed Force from the Airmobile Special Forces Group (GAFE) regarded an elite division in the Mexican military.

Further, Professor Deare elaborated on the specific US training to the Mexican personnel comprising ‘counter-insurgency and ironically counter-narcotics operations’ with the exclusion of the advanced commando techniques that are regularly taught at Ft. Bragg.”

The reports suggest an interesting factor in this respect for world attention.

Ft. Bragg provides training for armed forces from worldwide. Hence the Mexican personnel receiving counter-insurgency maneuvers are not regarded as unusual.

However, the ex-military officials’ and general perception is the particular skills attained by the Zetas during their US training prepared them as professional narcotic dealers and mercenaries.

The Mexican President Felipe Calderon has committed 50,000 troops to combat the drug kingpins of various organization but the Zetas remain a force to reckon with especially after an estimated 30,000 lives lost in the past four years.

Grotesque violence includes decapitation and torture defiantly displayed on the main street and cyberspace notwithstanding other form of criminal activities such as engaging poor migrants into flesh trade and fatally assaulting students during private celebrations.

Even the expectant mothers are not spared in the mass executions attracting detest from other drug traders condemning the GAFE militia otherwise the Zetas for their abhorrent means in drug trafficking.

The ex-commander Deare reckons over 500 GAFE members had Special Forces training under the defined program drawing the Mexico Attorney General Office attention in 1999.

Laura Carlsen, the director, Americas program of the International Relations Center reportedly shared the information that subsequent to the US training, GAFE personnel relinquished service in the Mexico military to pursue the career as henchmen initially for the Gulf cartel and later set up their own organization – the Zetas, based on the Mexican top brass military radio code ‘Z.’

It was also pointed out that the Zetas show mercy to none in their violence against the general public.

In addition, the GAFE defections from the Mexican military is said to be significant raising an alarm for the Mexican government while the US trainers not surprised at the exodus.

The experts urge the US to investigate the methods used in the Special Forces training program for the Mexican armed forces contributing to the intriguing transformation in their human conduct.

In a similar context, the training from the Guatemalan Kaibiles, described as the unrelenting special operations force is equally found detrimental to the Mexican military personnel morale.

Within the state, the Mexican police are accused of protecting the drug cartels exacerbating the federal authorities’ battle against the narcotic agents.

Another observation being the Special Forces overseas training predominantly the US assignment combined with the meager salary in the military and police service are driving the individuals to inextricable occupation causing horrendous tragedies.

The Congress stalled $1.3billion US pledge under the 2007 Merida plan to fund the Mexican drug war is rejected by the population due to the inherent risks against its sovereignty and the potential threat to citizens’ rights.

Since nothing happens without a cause, it is essential to explore the underlying facts on the rebel groups’ emergence.

It is indicated in the reports that;

GAFE (The US trained Mexican Special Forces) was established in 1994 to curb the Zapatista rebels in southern Mexico.

The Zapatistas origin is related to NAFTA – The North American Free Trade Agreement between Canada, USA and Mexico.

Zapatistas emerged in the same day as NAFTA – January 1, 1994.

Zapatistas, the native rebel group was formed to protest NAFTA – the most unpopular treaty is referenced as the “death sentence” on Mexican population because of the flawed agreement that facilitated subsidized US crops for entry into Mexican market identical to the trade imposition on the Caribbean nation Haiti in the same period that ultimately crippled the once self-sufficient Haitian economy.

Prior to signing the NAFTA agreement, it is noted that the affluent trade partners ignored the population concerns on this issue and,

Subsequently, the Zapatistas was formed to defend the rural farming community deprived of livelihood.

In 1994, NAFTA led to Zapatistas which in turn was eliminated by GAFE.

GAFE has evolved into ‘Zetas,’ the dangerous and feared drug cartel.

GAFE was strengthened with US training and support through exposure to drugs trade surpassing any NAFTA benefits. The drug trade incentivized with uncontrolled borders allowing among many goods the disproportionate illegal drugs that successfully displaced the rural community and pushed the starving unemployed youth to drug peddling for survival.

The phenomenal annual revenue from the booming narcotics industry is evaluated between $19 billion – $40 billion and proved to be potent in the terror recruitment.

Unequivocally, the Mexican government has a daunting task in winning the war against the drug cartel.

The Mexican President Felipe Calderon could review the strategies in the drug war and address them appropriately.

First and foremost – Identify and replace the corrupt sources in the law enforcement division, Mexican Military and security personnel deployed to fight the nefarious drug gangs.

Then maintaining decent salary for the police force, the Military and the security officials from top to bottom would deter accepting bribes and promote loyalty to the nation.

Serious problems lie in the Special Forces Training GAFE – techniques and the motive for defection require thorough investigation and stringent measures to reverse the course.

Prohibiting counterproductive training to the Mexican Special Forces by US or other groups is necessary to terminate the Zetas and other drug cartel’s growth.

National guards across the border to block drugs and arms trade activities for which the United States cooperation is paramount. It would effectively restrict the supply and ease the burden on the Mexican state.

State wide inspection and crackdown on illegal drugs and arms exchange should lead to major breakthrough.

Most importantly, redefining NAFTA from Free Trade Agreement to Fair Trade Agreement would improve economic conditions and create jobs for the struggling communities.

The concerted efforts by Mexico, United States, Canada and Latin America could expedite the inevitable victory in the contentious drug war.

Mexico must realize that it is not alone in the crusade. Poignantly, none are invincible and the drug cartels are no exception.

Best Wishes to Mexico for long lasting peace, security and prosperity.

Thank you.

Es indicado en los informes esto;

Gracias.

Ecuador Failed Coup d’état – September 30, 2010

October 31, 2010

By Padmini Arhant

On September 30, 2010, yet another Latin American nation was targeted with a coup attempt by the police forces apparently not acting alone in the calculated operation fortunately resulting in a massive failure due to the brave civil society mobilization and the Ecuadorian security personnel prompt action.

Unlike the successful Honduran coup in June 2009 with the democratically elected leader Manuel Zelaya deposed against the republic will evidently involving Washington coup consultants and their liaison,

The Ecuadorian mission was a renewed political assault on its sovereignty testing the democratic strength that conveyed a defiant message to the perpetrators not to underestimate the people power.

According to the reports – the law on the spending cuts was falsely propagated as having direct impact on the police officers’ bonuses and job benefits despite no pay or perquisite reductions providing a pretext for the conspirators to instigate uprising in the capital city, Quito and the Guayquil harbor town.

Consequentially, the coup based on Latin American prototype had disrupted ground and air transportation cancelling the domestic and international flights in the country.

The Ecuadorian air force interestingly comprising numerous US-trained officers while selectively excluding the Venezuelan pilots serving within the Ecuadorian defense network is reported to have executed the halting with the misguided police coordination.

Meanwhile, the Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa seemingly had a close encounter with fatality upon approaching the police quarters to offer a personal explanation on the reform.

The President and the bodyguards were forced to take shelter in a military hospital after being confronted with the rebel police firing, tear gas and grenade explosion.

Then the military hospital was immediately sieged by the police rebels and armed opponents for prolonged hours and eventually President Correa appeared to have been set free by the Special Forces taking control of the situation.

The reports claim the following events that had unequivocally led to the local law enforcement officers’ botched coup in the Latin American nation – Ecuador.

Until now, the Ecuador police and operatives had been pursued by the US Embassy with a defined agenda accompanied by the various US agencies such as FBI, CIA , DEA and others generous funding for the high rank police officials’ bonuses and the police department’s specific requirements.

The extraordinary rapport between the Ecuador police, the army intelligence, the US Embassy and the listed US agencies had facilitated the US intelligence agency to hire their services for 24/7 surveillance of the nation’s political figures, journalists and other civilians perceived by the US intelligence as potential US opponents.

Early 2007, President Correa administration clamp down on the illegal establishment set up by the US controlled intelligencia enabled the democratic government to repossess control of their national intelligence agencies.

Moreover, the President had wisely eliminated the unofficial dealings via unethical payroll system between the Ecuadorian army intelligence, police force and the US Embassy not barring the US combined agencies.

Washington had then reacted demanding the Ecuadorian DEA return the computers supplied by the US DEA.

The Ecuador-US relations had soured after President Correa’s closure of the US airbase in Mante. So Washington disapproved Ecuador partnership with its Latin American neighbors among several other issues.

As stated earlier, the overwhelming confidence from the Honduran coup triumph in June 2009 had motivated Washington to imitate plan in other parts of Latin America and the U.S. administration had under evaluated Ecuadorians resistance.

The Latin American nations’ democratically elected leaderships have been constantly threatened and overthrown invariably by the U.S. backed forces leaving the region in ceaseless economic and political turmoil.

Reports suggest that the blatant coup against President Rafael Correa was a systematic effort initiated by the US ambassador to Ecuador, Heather Hodges appointed in August 2008.

The profile details her as having previously worked in Guatemala under the dictatorial regime Rios Montt and later on held deputy director position with the US State Department for Cuban Affairs interconnected to CIA.

Mrs. Hodges prior employment with USAID in many nations and,

Subsequently as the US ambassador to Moldova primarily entailed severing ties of these countries with Russia and form an orange revolution. At present Mrs. Hodges is said to be training CIA employed groups in Venezuela, Bolivia and Ecuador.

The trip made by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to Quito in June 2009 to convince the Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa to agree with US on all issues and reverse the earlier actions proved to be futile.

Hence, the US ambassador Heather Hodges was ordered to carry out the coup to debilitate President Correa and ultimately replace the incumbent with the government in agreement to US position like in Honduras.

USAID had solely interjected $40 million for this purpose using the former Ecuadorian President Lucio Gutierrez as the protagonist. The ex-President miserable performance had contributed to the Ecuadorian plight that set his departure from the country denying him access to power during the 2009 Presidential bid that concluded in a colossal defeat.

Per the carefully crafted CIA blueprint President Gutierrez was to portray the incumbent President Rafael Correa as an alleged “dictator,” and advise power transfer to an interim government in a televised statement.

Furthermore, the plot aimed at the Ecuadorian Parliament abandonment and prepare the nation for mock elections.

However, the democratically elected President Correa’s allies thwarted the plan and declined television appearance to the former President.

Also the lndian group PACHAKUTIK had refused to participate in the overthrow leading to the coup collapse.

Ecuador is under emergency rule and President Rafael Correa is believed to have vowed to investigate the elements from the police to the army intelligence sources behind the undemocratic process.

The former President Gutierrez and the organization Sociedad Patriotica is indicted for the explicit role in the CIA masterminded failed coup.

UNASUR – The Union of South American Nations resembling the EU had an emergency meeting in Argentinian Capital, Buenos Aires on October 1, 2010 to address and adopt measures on the Ecuador political crisis and the relentless coups against Latin American governments.

The reports confirmed that Washington did not condemn those engaged in the Ecuador coup d’état.

Latin American coups have long been the tradition leading to U.S. as the originating point.

Nevertheless, the successive coups – Honduras in 2009 and Ecuador in 2010 deserves worldwide condemnation denouncing the architects’ perpetual endeavor to inflict political instability, economic constriction and social chaos on the Latin American population.

Regardless of status, any nation that foments political unrest driven by ‘Super Power’ syndrome has a credibility factor demonstrating as a reliable global leader in the twenty first century.

Powerful nations gain respect and recognition when the leaderships strive for global peace and prosperity rather than weakening the sovereignty of nations seeking trustworthy partnership to alleviate their struggle.

Given the facts and circumstantial evidences in the continuous Latin American coups,

United States taxpayers as the electorates have a prime responsibility to rise to the occasion on the eve of the crucial mid-term election and pose the legitimate questions to the Congressional contenders;

As the elected representatives and the republic voice in Congress,

What is their strategy to end the U.S political meddling in international domain?

Why the masterminds are granted political impunity in the deliberate involvement to cause mayhem in other societies?

Are they satisfied with their inaction or lack of interest underscoring the complicity to the provocative political interference in other parts of the world exacerbating the local population suffering?

How do they propose to hold those responsible for the systemic abuse of power?

Democracy is powerful when the voice of the people are heard maintaining equal rights and justice for all.

Thank you.

Los contribuyentes de los Estados Unidos como los electorados tienen una responsabilidad principal de elevarse a la ocasión en vísperas de la elección de mitad de trimestre crucial y plantear las preguntas legítimas a los contendientes del Congreso;

Gracias.
