UNHRC Vote – Sri Lanka Tamils & Palestine Politicizing Humanitarian Issues

March 26, 2012

UNHRC Vote –

Sri Lanka Tamils

&

Palestine

Politicizing Humanitarian Issues

Padmini Arhant

On March 22, 2012 – United Nations Human Rights Council voted on two pertinent humanitarian issues related to gross human rights violation in Sri Lanka and Israeli occupied Palestinian territories of West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Sri Lanka – United States tabled UN resolution against the island nation in the Indian sub-continent for the lack of remedial measures in the post conflict between Sri Lankan government and the resistance group for self-determination and emancipation – Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

The glaring similarities in the Tamil and Palestinian plight are state oppression and persecution unequivocally inciting a segment within subjugated population to retaliate for violent suppression of basic human rights giving birth to militancy.

Although LTTE representing Tamil suffering and previously PLO (Palestinian Liberation Organization) dissenting illegal invasion and occupation of meager Palestinian land declared terrorist organizations by the same nations having profited from lucrative arms supply to them directly and indirectly,

Neither the respective state aggression provoking these networks violent reactions held accountable nor their disproportionate use of force qualifying state sponsored terrorism condemned demanding an end to atrocity against entire demography via enforceable UN resolutions.

Nothing happens without a cause and government misuse of armed forces under national security pretext has become the norm in compliance with military industrial complex chartered course often deviating from peaceful negotiations and constructive dialogue prolonging victims’ ordeal attributed to political stalemate.

The government authority with political and military power reliance on ammunitions rather than democratic means to address citizens’ grievances ignites perpetual crossfire endangering innocent civilians on all sides while the defense industry flourish from arms influx exacerbating the confrontation.

Sri Lanka is yet to acknowledge ethnic Tamils the integral part of society through fair political rights in the national and provincial level, economic opportunities barring origin based discrimination; social equality demonstrated in facilitating healthy living conditions and education emphasizing inclusiveness are the milestones for communal harmony.

Poignantly, Sri Lankan Tamils were mandatorily transmigrated from native India by then colonial power to work in the formerly known Ceylon tea plantation.

With British Raj departure leaving behind conundrums as souvenir invariably in every colony around the world,

Since then Tamil identity in Sri Lanka unfortunately formulated into burden on society instead of appreciating economic contributions predominantly benefiting the majority due to prevalent disenfranchisement.

Notwithstanding credible sources as well as independent investigative journalists accounts on brutality and state authorized military executions in open fields showing no mercy to women, children and men perceived as terror elements in the absence of any evidence to such convictions.

Sri Lankan government under President and Commander-in-Chief Mahinda Rajapaks primarily held responsible for serious violation of international law in indiscriminate killings constituting ethnic cleansing per reports accompanied by massacre footage.

Society vision as one community and nation reaps the rewards of pervasive peace and prosperity eliminating rifts and threats in the domestic front.

Simultaneously the unity safeguards sovereignty becoming the formidable force deterring external interference for vested interests.

U.S. organized UN vote against Sri Lanka with 24 in favor, 15 against and 8 abstentions in the 47 member council is indicative of equal opposition except for a swing vote barely altering the result considering abstinence on crucial issues is political expediency interpreted as Nay vote.

Even the swing vote apparently from India as Sri Lanka’s neighbor and present Indian government being close ally with Sri Lankan counterpart diluted UN mandate to Sri Lankan discretionary actions compromising effectiveness of the protocol.

Alongside sponsor United States commending strategic partner India’s calibration as positive

The resolution directed at implementing Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) recommendations with repeat request to re-investigate serious allegations on government approved crimes against humanity by the government.

Unlike independent international body findings for objectivity and accountability perhaps in the global judiciary system given the international criminal court justice credibility marred with selective indictments on humanitarian crimes.

India reportedly cast vote in reluctance heeding coalition political pressure at home that could have otherwise led to incumbent administration collapse setting the stage for early national elections.

The political party from Tamil Nadu State in alliance with current UPA 2 government at the center accused of conspiring in the Congress Party leader and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination.

Not to mention the self-protection impulse against potential backlash from AFSPA (Armed Forces with Special Powers Act) abuse in northeast and Kashmir valley implicating state and central government especially Home Ministry and Defense Ministry for disregarding security personnel abuse of civilians in the region.

Likewise the opponents voting against politically motivated resolution might have general objection in reference with timing, content, intent, or averting possible scrutiny of policies towards their citizens in parallel scenario.

As for nations negative vote quoting three years insufficient time for Sri Lanka to begin the healing process is a weak argument when generations have been wiped out in targeted genocide.

Nonetheless nations mistreatment of citizens and killing spree whether in their domicile or overseas could not be ignored as an internal affair even though those committing such crimes routinely claim in self-defense like Sri Lankan Special Envoy on Human Rights Mahinda Samarasinghe with reports on China and Russia agreement in this regard adding to the disappointing factor.

Turning a blind eye to injustice is complicity sharing equal ramifications for a civilized society. The world could not be treated as one preferentially to suit economic pursuits.

However on social and political fairness anomalies eventually affecting all – the strategy to distance from the matter delegitimizes the global organization such as United Nations functionality to alleviate human misery.

Palestinian Resolution On the same day following U.S. drafted resolution against Sri Lanka, UNHRC passed a resolution to conduct a probe on Israeli settlements infringement upon Palestinian statehood.

Interestingly, the outcome far better than Sri Lanka resolution probably associated with sponsorship and substance delivered among 47 members – 36 votes in concurrence, 10 abstentions and,

United States the only nation to reject the proposition against Israel confirming conflicting U.S. positions on humanitarian problems endured by people expecting rationale to prevail over politics.

UNHRC resolution calls for Israel to cease settlement activities in Palestinian land,

Officially engage in terminating expansion with an estimated 310,000 Israeli citizens occupying West Bank and,

According to international reports – Israeli committee issued permits for additional 500 homes in Northern West Bank in late February this year,

Besides 200,000 Israeli residents in a dozen or more neighborhoods in East Jerusalem annexed by Israel defying international condemnation.

The resolution also emphasized on Israel intervention in curbing violence with weapons confiscation from Israeli settlers throughout Palestinian homeland.

United States cried foul and denounced the resolution as partisanship against Israel.

Arguably Israel settlement agenda despite UN and international community outrage clarifies grave consequences for the U.S. ally isolated in dishonoring resolutions – the decision commonly found reproachable worldwide.

United States duality in UNHRC resolutions against Sri Lanka and Israel defines self-defeating purpose in politicizing humanitarian issues deserving genuine empathy and sincere commitment to reflect UN obligation in dispute settlement setting precedence for the future.

Citizens in Sri Lanka and Israel have unique opportunity to perform national duty in guiding their country towards freedom, equality and justice for all.

Best Wishes to people in Sri Lanka, Palestine and Israel for peaceful co-existence.

Peace to all

Thank you.

India and Pakistan – Peace Between Nuclear Neighbors Through WCC

March 29, 2011

By Padmini Arhant

India and Pakistan are scheduled to play against each other in the world cup cricket semi-final on
March 30, 2011 in India.

The expectations on both sides to clinch the title is overwhelming and the exciting event has created
an opportunity to bridge the gap between the two nuclear neighbors with the invitation from the Indian Prime Minister DR. Man Mohan Singh to the Pakistani counterpart Hon. Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani expected to attend the riveting one-day cricket match.

Meanwhile the two nations have come a long way in mending the fence with the acknowledgment of direct dialogue and persistent diplomacy to pave the path towards permanent peace and viable
solutions for myriad of political, economic and social challenges.

The peace summit in Thimpu, the capital in the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan was the icebreaker with significant consensus on economic relationship such as trade and transportation in addition to cultural exchange through sports, arts and entertainment.

Further developments on cooperation in Mumbai terror attack investigation and Pakistan Presidential pardon on the release of Indian prisoner held for cross-border violation are very encouraging.

The talks at various levels by both foreign ministries could come to fruition in the Prime Ministers’ personal meeting.

There is tremendous hope for peace to prevail in the Indian sub-continent with Pakistan and India providing the much-required assistance to other partners – Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Nepal.

Fostering mutually beneficial relationship to promote political stability, social equality and economic prospects would strengthen regional growth with global impact.

Besides it would enable trust building quintessential for easing and eventually eliminating security threats in the conventional and nuclear fronts.

Defense expenditure divestments in education, infrastructure, science and technology and importantly protecting the natural environment could revolutionize individual achievements.

The unique paradigm could serve as the model for other territories viz. Africa, Latin America, Eastern Europe and Middle East.

In sharing the available resources and technological expertise the national deficiencies could be addressed effectively leading to coordinated efforts in alleviating common plight like poverty, disease and literacy problems.

On the broader aspect – India and Pakistan could potentially lead in nuclear disarmament especially in the face of the devastating nuclear disaster sadly experienced by Japan with pervasive effects.

Solidarity among nations within a sub-continent or a continent also provides protection during natural catastrophes with quick access to humanitarian aid due to proximity.

Any compassionate response to human tragedies always generate good-will transforming the bilateral and multilateral ties to extraordinary heights.

With respect to the cricket game – the millions of fans cheering for their home teams are poised to accept the results in harmony than acrimony confirming the inherent quest to improve relations.

India and Pakistan as former world cup champions have proved their formidability and more so evident in the current tournament.

It will be a sure delight to watch the cream of the crop performance on both sides to win the coveted trophy.

India and Pakistan have reached an impressive milestone in the favorite sport and striving for similar status in political negotiations would guarantee the desirable outcome.

Perseverance is one of the key elements to success.  Maintaining the momentum will sustain the incremental victory thus far.

Wishing India and Pakistan a fabulous game producing lots of fun for the cricket enthusiasts in the respective domain.

Thank you.

World Cup Cricket 2011 Grand Tournament

February 19, 2011

By Padmini Arhant

The World Cup Cricket grand tournament begins on February 19, 2011.

Bangladesh hosted the spectacular opening ceremony with fireworks amid 25,000 cheering cricket fans gathered for an up close view of their favorite sports heroes.

First match between India and Bangladesh held today in Dhaka, Bangladesh resulted in the Indian side winning by 87 runs.

Heartfelt Congratulations! To team India on the brilliant start with more to follow until the end.

Cricket is religiously followed in the Indian sub-continent. The mega sports event is the most popular and in some quarters revered by the cricket enthusiasts fervently praying and desiring for their respective home team to clinch the world title.

The sport that was once considered the ‘Lords’ Game’ – a legacy from British empire is now played in every nook and corner of South East Asia especially in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Similarly in other parts of the world – West Indies, South Africa and Zimbabwe, notwithstanding western nations like England, Australia, New Zealand along with relatively new entrants – Ireland, Canada, Netherlands and Kenya have significant admirers and young cricketers competing to surpass the native legends’ records.

In India – the passion for the game is contagious with cricket lovers idolizing their favorite player and cricket season marks the beginning of sports carnival.

The current world cup competition involves 14 international teams playing 49 match games over 43 days in 14 different venues spread across India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

It is a one-day cricket match with limited overs set at 50 for each side unlike the test match that continues with 2 innings played by both teams over minimum of 3-4 days for conclusion.

Undoubtedly the world cup kicked off with a promising trail from the successful opening ceremony in Bangladesh to the recent victory for the Indian team.

There are other formidable challengers with similar aspirations and their performance will be a real treat to the spectators and sprawling cricket fans worldwide.

Since each team will strive to dominate the show – the audience are sure to be entertained to their heart content.

Cricket craze is pervasive and the multinational caliber pronounces the effects during the fixated moment of world cup championship.

Ethics and economics aspect – The stakes are high in the tremendously appealing sport not devoid of controversies and scandals related to match fixing leading to emerging talents’ abrupt end of the career.

Similarly the crime investigation on the sudden demise of a foreign coach not long ago caused a maelstrom within the prestigious sports circle.

Sports are enjoyable at any time. However maintaining discipline and prioritizing high moral conduct would not only enhance individual image but also promote a positive message to several million impressionable minds preparing to enter the enthralling sport as professionals.

There are no losers in a contest for the participants share the glory in sports spirit.

On that optimistic note – Wishing phenomenal success to every contestant in the World Cup Cricket 2011.

Best Wishes to all sports stars of the riveting one-day international cricket.

Thank you.

International General Elections – 2010

February 21, 2010

By Padmini Arhant

Congratulations! To the newly elected and the incumbents re-elected for the office of Presidency in their respective nations.

President of the State of Bolivia – Juan Evo Morales Ayma, the indigenous head of state and the incumbent President re-elected in December 2009 for a second term.
President Morales represents the MAS (Movement toward Socialism) political party.

President of the Republic of Croatia, Ivo Josipović representing the Social Democratic Party of Croatia elected on January 10, 2010.

President-elect of the Republic of Chile – Sebastián Piñera, positioned Center-Right representing National Renewal Party, elected on January 17, 2010.

President-elect of Ukraine – Viktor Yanukovych, representing Party of Regions, Political Position – Centrist and Pro-Russian, elected on January 17, 2010.

President-elect of Costa Rica, Laura Chinchilla Miranda, first female President, representing the National Liberation Party – Political Platform – Social Democracy and Green Politics, elected on February 7, 2010.
————————————————————————————————-

With reservations due to the undemocratic circumstances of the electoral process – the Sri Lankan election results presented as information only.

Incumbent President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapaksa, of the United People’s Freedom Alliance Party – decided to seek a fresh mandate prior to the expiration of his term in 2011,

To capitalize on the victory against the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam), that represented the ethnic Tamils oppressed and persecuted since the ‘British rule’ departure from the Indian sub-continent.

President Mahinda Rajapaksha victory is highly disputed amid denial of war crime charges on ethnic cleansing of Sri Lankan Tamils specifically the brutal execution of unarmed men along with mass killings of unarmed civilians – women and children by barring foreign journalists and press media to evade international condemnation.

I wish the democratically elected leaders success during the political term and look forward to their contribution towards economic progress, environmental goals, social justice and regional stability.

Thank you.

People’s Republic of China – The Deadly Dragon

August 13, 2009

By Padmini Arhant

Profile – The world’s most populous nation, hailed the emerging economic power presumably in control of the U.S. Treasury and the EU Exchequer, world’s third largest country by total area and the second largest by … ranges forming China’s borders with India and Central Asia.

As the longest thriving Communist power, the totalitarian government embraced Capitalism parallel to its political setting with absolute control on policies directly contradictory to the free market system in the rest of the world.

Politically a Communist and economically a Capitalist nation, China is also a venerable member of the United Nations Security Council for reasons unfitting during the most important U.N. Structural formation post World War II. This has resulted in the excessive use of veto power by the authoritarian rule against all things humane and universally beneficial.

The Communist nation denounced as the fascist government in the new millennium by its enormous population, oppressed, repressed and deprived of basic human rights particularly the freedom of speech and the ominous communication censorship.

Tiananmen Square killings is a stark reminder to the global community that when a nation do not hesitate to murder scores of its unarmed civilians in worldview, it can never be taken for granted in the safe treatment of its neighbors. Case evidenced in the invasion and butchering of innocent Tibetan monks, men, women and children and the interference in neighboring Nepal’s politics by thrusting ‘Communism,’ on the entire ‘Hindu’ population unfamiliar with the concept until China’s arrival.

Just recently, the twentieth anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre observed solemnly and cautiously not on Chinese soil but elsewhere in an effort not to rock the ‘tug boat’ upheld as the Titanic due to the illusionary overcast in the perception among the world operatives.

The world must pay attention and act swiftly on the dragon nation’s role in the geo-political, economic, social, cultural and environmental issues.

In the economic front, the Communist regime gained advantage in the latter part of the twentieth century predominantly because of the pervasive economic boom in the United States and across the world with a sharp escalation in demands on a wide spectrum of consumer goods.

China wasted no time and seized the opportunity to strengthen the supplier status as the world’s largest ‘manufacturing warehouse’ sparing no consumer articles. In addition, China single handedly wiped out the prospects of any viable competition in the global economy with the ‘bargain’ deals as a tool… in attracting big and small manufacturers around the world.

Most businesses neglected their own workforce for the Communist governed rigid market. While others ignored poor and developing nations despite, their flexibility to the free market factors.

The surge in demands during the nineties from the U.S. and global prosperity prompted the secretive and secluded Chinese political system to break away from the economic protectionism and adopt a customized capitalism within the confines of Communism.

It’s essential to note the ironies in the treatment of Communist countries by the Western governments, i.e. the United States and Europe.

The ideal example is the Latin neighbor across the Caribbean, a long time foe of the United States, the ‘Communist’ Cuba that led to the nerve racking Cuban Missile Crisis, shortly halting the world on the possible confrontation between the nuclear Super Powers, the United States and the former Soviet Union.

Cuba has been isolated for decades and now there appears to be a glimpse of hope in the relationship between the United States and the Cuban authority, attributable to President Obama’s diplomacy message. The economic sanctions and travel restrictions (recently eased by President Obama) against Cuba on the charges of human rights violation and non-democratic power only punished the long-suffering Cuban population rather than achieving the intended goal to remove the ‘Communist’ power.

On the Contrary, the Communist China with no respect for international or humanitarian law crowned the world leader and perpetually granted MFN (Most Favored Nation) status along with premium membership in WTO (World Trade Organization)…

Such rewards speak volume about the hypocrisy in the Western foreign policy, not to mention the lack of courage in clipping the wings of the scavenger bird…inadvertently allowing the Communist nation’s dominance in the world economy and political sphere to the detriment of regional and global peace and security.

Why should the global population awaken to the Communist China’s Supremacy?

Apart from history related to foot binding and gleefully dispensing lives to build the landmark -‘Great Wall of China.’ the Chinese regime’s atrocities and recalcitrant conduct in dealing with the free market investors and entrepreneurs deserve scrutiny.

As stated above, China has artfully manipulated their currency to weaken the U.S. dollar and the investment in U.S. Treasury Notes is an insurance to bind the United States financially making it symbolic with the free and democratic USA indebted to a repressive Chinese regime. The scenario enabling the unruly government to relentlessly engage in arms supply to the impoverished regions of the world such as Darfur, Sudan, Congo, Rwanda, Sri Lanka and others.

Chinese aggressive takeover of the mass production of consumer goods has killed NAFTA, CAFTA… and responsible for countries like Mexico embroiled in war against the Drug Cartels emerging from poverty, despair and hopelessness, notwithstanding the other poorest nations unable to compete with China in winning the favorable trading status or luring manufacturing investments in their respective countries. Simply put, the Chinese over-indulgence negated chances for poorer nations in exporting goods to the consumer buoyant U.S. market.

With respect to trade and commerce, China’s latest ban on world-renowned ‘Google’ search engine on the bizarre pretext of protecting its population from pornography is an ill-conceived hogwash with nothing to rest on. Likewise, in the software saga – the mandatory requirement for all PC’s to contain built-in software in compliance with the regime’s prohibition of the free expression in the modern technological age is the direct imposition of Communist rule of law – “My way or High Way.”

Further, China is unique in the intellectual property warfare by leading the amateurs in the piracy, forging the patent right and the copyright of products and services especially with the ones manufactured in the USA.

Again, if it’s rampant in the publishing field, it’s potent in the music industry with the downloading of music and DVDs, endless supply of unauthorized imitations/copies of Hollywood movies prior to the legal distribution in the world market…

China’s monopoly in the cyberspace by preventing free market competition in accessing the expansive market share of the Chinese users aptly qualifies for the ‘big bully’ title.

It’s unwillingness to cooperate with France on the recommendation to hold overseas Corporations accountable for tax evasion through tax havens is a testimony to the regime’s lack of integrity.

International Sports like Beijing Olympics – China’s strategy to stomp USA by any means – hook or crook duly reported in the accidental slip of the Chinese on-line media and the vigilant international press. It has a specific reference to the cruel detainment of young Chinese athletes trained for ‘Gymnastics’ in the extreme and strenuous conditions against the International Olympic guidelines safeguarding the athletes’ interests.

In the scientific arena, the organ extortion for transplants and experiment turned a blind eye by the Communist authority, otherwise a stickler for rules and regulations enforced against normal existence.

Social Protocol – China’s population control measure involving one child policy triggered infanticide and alarming number of orphans especially female children in the appalling orphanages pleading the authorities to care for them.

Weapons of Mass Destruction – Easily delivered through food and various consumer products as experienced in the toxic toothpaste and lead based children’s toys, not excluding the leaking battery cells in laptop computers causing explosion in some incidents – from items manufactured in China.

Environment is oxymoron to the world’s largest polluter investing in gusto on fossil fuel from Australia and refusing to commit to greenhouse gas reduction by limiting carbon emission.

Similarly, an utter disregard for life in general, human trafficking is a normal activity and a huge lucrative trade carried out in a smooth operation with the knowledge of the regime within, along the borders and outside China by the undesirable elements normally serving time in prison in the lawful regions.

China’s footprints are traceable in almost every civil war and ethnic cleansing across the globe, being the voracious supplier of deadly and dangerous weapons. The military industrial complex thrives with the active purveyor like China.

China is guilty of genocide in Darfur, Sri Lankan ethnic cleansing, and most poignantly invasion, occupation and systemic violation of the peaceful and pious Tibetan population and culture.

Chinese Communist regime is the avant- guard and a substantial aid to militant North Korea, Burma, Sudan, Iran to name a few. It doesn’t fall behind in being a staunch ally to Pakistan in instigating and stirring tension with its nuclear neighbor India.

China’s role in the U.N. Security Council thus far is, remaining a vehement opponent of effective action against North Korea, Burma, Iran and dictatorships around the world.
————————————————————————————————–
What is the deadly dragon up to now in the region?

China’s insatiable appetite revealed in the most shocking and astonishing developments that would engulf the entire world if not intervened immediately.

The Chinese Communist regime invaded and destroyed the tranquility of the rich Tibetan culture and the peace loving Tibetan Buddhists, followed by the successful influence of ‘Communism’ on the ‘Hindu’ nation, Nepal. All of this happened on the international watch.

At present, the regime is in full preparation to take the world by storm with the aggressive invasion of the world’s largest democracy and the unfortunate closest neighbor, India.

Yes, you heard it right.

China has been active and infiltrating into the north and north eastern borders of India for quite some time and now the emboldened regime with the political and economic clout considers the moment ripe to devour the democratic, secular and nuclear India.

The Communist regime has mobilized the vast army through bullet trains and high speed transportations and solidly planning to surround the Indian borders on all sides. It’s just a matter of time.

Lately, the Chinese Think Tank, China International Institute for Strategic Studies (WWW.CIISS.ORG) masterminded a plan for the authoritarian rule and made the following proposal.

According to the plan, the regime advised to split India into 30 segments as India has 28 states and 7 union territories. Chinese regime asked to approach the vulnerable small and big nations such as Nepal, Bhutan and Pakistan in the North and Bangladesh in the North East to assist in disintegrating India like Europe and the former Soviet Union.

The plan is to divide India on ethnic and religious diversity by having each neighbor assigned with a specific task aided by the totalitarian China.

The think tank detailed the devious operation beginning from North India, Kashmir aptly assigned to nuclear Pakistan, West Bengal in the eastern border to Bangladesh because of similar ethnicity, create separatist movement in Tamil Nadu, Southern India and force India to concede to the fragmentation of itself.

China’s behavior doesn’t come as a surprise. China betrayed India soon after the long fought independence from the British Empire. China ambushed India in the most cowardly manner.

The Western-educated and political savvy, First Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru extended India’s friendship hand only to be bitten harshly by the Communist leadership in China, Zhou Enlai also known as Chou En-lai and the prominent Mao Zedong.

What should India do to thwart the aggression from the predator China?

Firstly, India must launch an aggressive campaign educating and addressing the rural and disenchanted mass in the local languages and dialects about China’s dubious plan. The Congress government and party must simultaneously resolve the pressing issues of the local population to build the necessary confidence and trust towards the government and the agencies.

India’s rescue from the monster attack depends on every citizen regardless of background, standing up to unite the nation and promote solidarity by rejecting the Chinese orchestrated propaganda targeting the weak and the gullible populace.

It’s truly a testing time for every Indian to display their patriotism and reach out to those who are confused and disoriented about the great future of the world’s largest democracy.

Remember the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi’s words – No matter what, India is a secular nation and will remain so now and in the future. It is the duty of the brave and smart citizens of India to demonstrate resolve against the foreign infiltration, and keep India unified at all costs.

Remind your fellow Indian citizens that irrespective of race, religion, skin color and socio-economic status, they are children of God. Everyone must come together as a national force and not a regional threat against one another falling into the enemy’s booby trap.

Bollywood could play a significant role through documentary or commercial films on the national unity theme. Don’t fail to include the footage of Tiananmen Square and present the realities of split Europe then and the unified Europe now through European Union. Also, provide the horrible images of the persecution of Tibetans, in the Tibet occupied by China and the plight of the ethnic Muslim population in the Chinese province.

Message for the regional neighbors – Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Pakistan:

The message replicated for the governments and the people of Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal not to commit the blunder of aiding and abetting with the Communist regime in China that disregarded and disinherited its own people in the past and present. In fact, it would be foolhardy for the neighbors to set fire to the common habitat.

The government and the people of Bangladesh should not believe in the Communist rumors against Indian regional politics and refrain from becoming part of the political quagmire in the region.
Relevantly, Bangladesh will not be a free nation today, if not for the sacrifice of the Indian blood in the 1971 war against Pakistan to liberate the formerly known East Pakistan, that later became Bangladesh.

As for Bhutan and Nepal, heeding to the advice of the brutal Chinese regime to stir tensions or an uprising against India will be a political suicide and sure to backfire sooner than later resembling the fate of oppressed Tibet by China.

Pakistan as a mature nation should well understand that every action has equal and opposite reaction. The Communist China might project India as the vitriolic rival; however, the Chinese authority’s regional ambition should not be underestimated.

Any assistance by Pakistan to China in destabilizing India would be analogous to the naïve adolescent riding on the crocodile/alligator’s back to get across the river banks, only to become the scrumptious feast for the ever hungry marsh land creature.

The people of Indian Kashmir experiencing the freedom, peace, political and economic stability on the Indian side should not fall for misguided tales and lies through agents of the Chinese regime. Kashmiris should take a hard look at the Pakistan riddled with the militants occupation, terrorist camps and eternal chaos of suicide bombings, explosions contributing widespread fear among the Pakistani population about their security and future…

People of Tamil Nadu and West Bengal acknowledged for their sharp intellect should unanimously shun the foreign sources hired to sabotage the Indian national interest and stay committed towards the national defense.

Warning to the mighty and presumptuous People’s Republic of China that has neither represented the people nor demonstrated as the republic:

Based on the adequately available evidence, the Chinese troops mobilization along the north and north eastern borders of India must be withdrawn effective immediately and unconditionally. China has no business lingering around and near the clearly demarcated Indian territories.

The CIISS think tank diabolical strategy to distract the Chinese population drowned in decades of misery as political prisoners and the onset of economic gloom following the short-lived cornucopia do not justify the vicious and treacherous plot against neighboring India doing no harm whatsoever to the Chinese regime or the people of China.

If the Communist regime accepts the so-called think tank proposal and acts upon it to camouflage the domestic problems of different kinds –frustration among pro-democracy youth, unrest, ethnic tension with the Muslim population, uncertain economy, growing unemployment…

It would lead to devastating Galactic response with a great deal of variation. Any nation on planet earth in possession of the vast armed forces and nuclear arsenal is not invincible and therefore such assumption is purely delusional.

China’s despot leadership comprising Premier Wen Jiabao and President Hu Jintao should not underestimate the prophetic call and proceed to the destination of peril with the troop amassment around India.

It is clear to the international community that the Chinese leadership involvement in Darfur genocide, abuse of Tibetan population and suppression of democracy movement in China…unequivocally a humanitarian crime of greater impact in modern times.

Hence, it would justify calling for the worldwide boycott of goods and services from China and withdrawal of investments in hybrid or exclusive Chinese holdings by citizens for global peace and democracy.

The reconfiguration of the U.N. Security Council delivered for a purpose and the United Nations expected to act in accordance with the new world order. Any slight of the information would render the United Nations incapacitated confirming the majority opinion on the U.N. validity.

Finally, China’s activities along the Indian borders is an invitation to a free fall from the economic cliff with serious ramifications and failure to heed to the call would be catastrophic, perhaps in the form of assorted natural disasters.

It’s time for the universe to recognize the devil in disguise behind the masqueraded deadly dragon.

Thank you.

International Politics – India’s General Election Results

May 16, 2009

By Padmini Arhant

Heartfelt Congratulations! to DR. Manmohan Singh and Mrs. Sonia Gandhi on the impressive victory and re-election of the Congress Party to lead the world’s largest democracy towards further progress and prosperity.

India is at the crossroads in the peace process particularly with the nuclear neighbor Pakistan, currently dealing with challenges threatening the national and international security. There is an opportunity for the nuclear nations to develop peaceful bilateral relationship and revive mutual trust as the foundation to promote trade, economic and cultural exchanges beneficial for the entire sub-continent.

Now is the time to lay the historic discord to rest and begin a new chapter by guiding the younger generations on both sides to coexist in harmony. The best strategy for prolonged peace in the region and global security is nuclear disarmament.  Perhaps, it could begin in the Indian sub-continent leading other nuclear nations to follow suit.  Such unprecedented move would be symbolic for the nation set free by the renowned pioneer of peace and non-violence, Mahatma Gandhi.

Indian leadership desperately required in the peaceful resolution of the Sri Lankan crisis. The escalating violence and the recent death toll among the minority Tamil civilian population are unacceptable. Again, there is no justification whatsoever in the ongoing military action by the Sri Lankan government focused on the minority Tamils’ displacement and replacing them with the Sinhalese settlement.

It’s incumbent on India to refrain from aiding the Sri Lankan government anyhow in the hostility and persecution of the minority Tamils. Sri Lanka well armed with ammunitions supplied by nations prioritizing profit over people needs no further assistance in the crime against humanity. History is testimony that when all things fail in securing equality and justice, uprising by marginalized population is a natural course of action against oppressive power.

However, violent means by the minority representatives are worthy of condemnation and India could play a decisive role in the peaceful negotiations between the two sides. Indian involvement would be legitimate considering the significant representation of Tamils in the southern Indian state of Tamilnadu.

It’s equally important for India to remain vigilant on the recent developments in the northern side of the border concerning Nepal and China’s unnecessary influence. In the other international matter, India should renounce any ties with the repressive regime, Burma. India’s continuous trade relationship with the nation in defiance of humanitarian laws and suppression of democracy raises credibility issue and potentially controversial for the world largest democracy.

Finally, the Congress government should expand attention to the poorest groups apart from the farmers in the society. Again, it’s imperative to provide housing, education, jobs and health care to those at the bottom of the socio-economic strata. India’s progress will truly be reflected when prosperity shared among all rather than the privileged few.

Best Wishes to DR. Manmohan Singh, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi and the Congress Party in all endeavors.

International Politics – India’s General Elections

May 7, 2009

The world’s largest democracy goes to the polls to elect a Parliamentary government that would govern the nation regarded as the other emerging economic power in Asia.  India being the multilingual, multi-ethnic and diverse society is complex in political nature because of the multi-political factions representing a wide range of social, economic, political and environmental issues.

Further, such complexity diminishes the prospects for any major party to form a government.  In the absence of absolute majority, the winning party often forced to forge alliance with their enemy’s enemy and earn the title Coalition government resembling the democratic outcome in Israel, Germany and Australia to name a few around the world.

Indian election like any other electoral process is not devoid of controversies and the highly decorated stage performances by political figures.  In addition, the involvement of celebrities as surrogates is all too familiar for political enthusiasts.  The interesting feature of the Indian election is the massive participation of the rural and the impoverished segment of the population prominently left behind in the rising economic prosperity prevalent among the society’s middle class.  Obviously, the widening gap between the haves and the have-nots is the topic for many contenders to deal with during any political debates and public appearances.

Do the electorate buy what the political candidates and the representatives offer while seeking their votes?

Even though, the literacy rate among the rural and the poor electorate may not meet the international standard, one should never underestimate the political knowledge of the struggling class in the society.  Unfortunately, the plight of this populace also exploited for political reasons by many aspiring rookie and experienced political rivals alike, in concurrence with the regular politics found anywhere.

India has come a long way and dealt with great many challenges since independence.  In the past decade, the tremendous economic and social progress is transparent in the lower income and middle class population. The achievements in science and technology has been instrumental in the impressive economic growth despite the politics related to outsourcing and the growing , well educated youth population form a valuable asset in strengthening the present and future economic security.

The country is experiencing revolutionary demographic shifts among the rural and urban population creating opportunities for continuous productivity.  Nevertheless, prosperity accompanied by problems is a common phenomenon for developing nations in a competitive global economy.   With the steady economic growth, the inflationary rate requires constant monitoring in correlation with the free market demand and supply factor.  Besides, the sustainable population growth strategy would ease the burden on urban development, industrial expansion and ultimately the environmental goals.

The rural population has been disadvantaged in the globalization trend directly affecting the farming community and served a platform for the ruling party to win the previous election.  Most states prioritized commercial sector over agriculture and abandoned the farmers forcing many to commit suicide, while others moved to industrial towns and urban areas in search of jobs.

Meanwhile, the aggressive promotion of chemical fertilizers and pesticides by the multinational corporations proved harmful to the crops apart from being an environmental hazard.  Organic food producers are in strife due to produce grown with chemical fertilizers arriving from the Chinese border and sold in the Indian fruit and vegetable markets at an unbeatable price.  Above that, the global warming has taken toll with extreme weather conditions varying from severe drought to flooding caused by monsoon rain damaging the crops and vegetation.

Social and economic disparities are visibly widespread among the poorest in both rural and urban parts of the country.  It is important for the new government to address abject poverty, disease, lack of education, medical facilities and provide better living conditions starting with the supply of pure drinking water and decent dwellings.

There is an urgent requirement for investments in infrastructure and environmental friendly energy programs that would minimize oil dependency while promoting efficient transportation. It would be beneficial to the overall economy.

In the geopolitical sphere, India is grappling with tensions all around the borders particularly with the nuclear neighbor Pakistan and the rising instability within that nation from Taliban insurgency and other terror networks.  The Indian side of Kashmir is relatively calm and reflected in the recent democratic state election.

On the northern side, the political turmoil in Nepal is a matter of concern due to the successful influence of China on the existing power, The Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist). Moreover, China’s illegal invasion and occupation of Tibet has led to the fleeing of Tibetan refugees to India.   India has responded well to the humanitarian call in accepting and providing asylum to the Tibetan population.

Across the Indian Ocean, the escalating ethnic cleansing by Sri Lankan government is a contentious issue for the people in TamilNadu, South India.

Amidst the election excitement, the political candidates capitalized on the Mumbai terror attack and were extravagant in the divisive politics with some of them exclusively targeting the Muslim population in the society, regardless of India being the second largest Muslim nation in the world.

If the fundamentalists in BJP and other political parties indulge in polarization, it would be detrimental for national security upon their election.  Likewise, the incumbent Congress Party must refrain from aiding Sri Lankan government in their hostility and persecution of the ethnic Tamil population to settle past political scores.  Such action could similarly lead to the disintegration of the society with a significant representation of Tamils in the southern Indian state of Tamilnadu.

Indian politics deserve a breath of fresh air with young intellectuals in leadership role to guide the nation utilizing modern and innovative concepts in all aspects.  Perhaps, it’s time for the Indian society to renounce dynasty, nepotism and seniority based politics.

India sought freedom on the premise of non-violence and relentless peace process initiated by the founding father and leader Mahatma Gandhi. Any effort by the political factions to dismantle the unity and peace foundation would be disastrous for the country with enormous potential.  India is a secular nation and remains so now and in the future.

Every vote counts and matter in a democracy.  The citizens of democratic nations privileged with the power to elect a government of the people, for the people and by the people should never discard the exclusive right.

On that note, I wish the world’s largest democracy everlasting peace, progress and prosperity.

Thank you.
