India – Jan Lokpal Bill Government Response

August 23, 2011

By Padmini Arhant

The latest development on political stalemate between the government and civil society leader Shri Anna Hazare is encouraging in terms of Prime Minister Man Mohan Singh’s letter enquiring the civil society leader’s health and request to end his fast on the 8th consecutive day.

Additionally, government overtures to civil society for discussion on Jan Lokpal bill through interlocutors and,

Likewise referring the civil society bill to government appointed Parliament Standing Committee on Lokopal with the Chairman being the administration’s key spokesperson and Senior Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi poses conflict of interest,

Besides repeating the process to delay the anticipated outcome.

Although the government gesture to resume talks is welcome, the purpose behind the efforts is clearly not leading towards civil society’s goals i.e. Jan Lokpal legislation in Parliament.

Instead the government’s calculated strategy spins the people’s plea for Jan Lokpal bill subjecting the landmark legislation to bureaucratic rigmarole at Congress members’ discretions in the capacity as Speaker and Lokpal Standing Committee Chairman without any guarantee for approval.

Such innovative tactics to reject Jan Lokpal bill only confirms the government opposition rather than reconciliation in the standoff with the nation.

It would be honorable and incumbent upon the government to extend identical treatment to citizens’ initiated Jan Lokpal bill as the Food bill and Communal Violence drafts from National Advisory Council by Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi received with ruling power’s overwhelming endorsement in Parliament.

Upon non-discriminatory and non-partisan decisions on national issues benefitting people and country they are elected to serve during their term in office,

The much-touted Parliamentary functionality as the legislative body would be legitimized in upholding republic rule.

As stated earlier, Jan Lokpal bill has been under scrutiny for several decades with no intention from political parties to legislate anti-corruption affecting the entire society.

The immediate action for effective results would be to withdraw government introduced Lokpal bill considering the weak version protecting the offenders than preventing corruption not to mention the inevitable defeat from the opposition coalition.

The government is required to present Jan Lokpal bill in Parliament in the same manner as NAC drafts were accepted and expedited with no modifications on the national interest premise.

Any political maneuvers to subvert the robust proposals against corruption would confirm the political party and the member’s determination to prolong status quo at national detriment eluding public and media investigation.

On the contrary, the government and oppositions’ sincere commitment to address corruption in the society would be evident when Jan Lokpal bill is passed with no loopholes or privileges from top bottom in public and private sector.

Essentially the burden squarely upon elected officials on the electorate watch to acknowledge the core democratic principle otherwise the statutory declaration  –

No one is above the law in real democracy.

It is crucial for government to move beyond agreement to exemplify through Jan Lokpal legislation with a strong provision for transparency and accountability tied to consequences in similar manner applicable to average citizens in the society.

Shri Anna Hazare entering into 9th consecutive day fasting is yet another responsibility for the Parliament members more focused on blocking the civil society backed legislation against corruption.

Moreover with rising sentiments and diminishing public patience on the lawmakers’ deliberation to pass Jan Lokpal bill,

The government and oppositions having wasted valuable time and resources no longer at luxury to squander political capital earned from the electorates ballots in a democratic system.

Shri Anna Hazare’s health and survival rests on the Parliament members’ political will to accelerate Jan Lokpal bill with a unique opportunity to alleviate citizens plight from corruption.

Indian mass is looking forward to Jan Lokpal bill swift passage by government and oppositions this week before Parliament session conclusion in semblance to their response to NAC authorized legislations.

Meanwhile Indian patriots solidarity is paramount to succeed in the crusade against corruption, nepotism and cronyism.

With prayers for Shri Anna Hazare’s well being,

People power must ensure Jan Lokpal bill becomes the law of the land today for a brighter tomorrow.

Jai Hind!

Peace to all!

Thank you.

India – Shri Anna Hazare’s Health and Government Inaction

August 22, 2011

By Padmini Arhant

Government inaction on Jan Lokpal bill is rejection of republic will.

The government explanation for ignoring the overwhelming public plea to pass Jan Lokpal bill is not convincing and procrastination does not serve in public or national interest except benefitting political agenda.

This strategy is undemocratic.   With the nation behind Jan Lokpal bill, the reluctance to expedite legislation clarifies the government apathy for people suffering,

Notwithstanding the economic liability burdened on the youth and struggling segments in the society.

If the ruling power and the opposition alike do not have any inclination to disavow corruption rampant in politics and across the society,

Then the Indian electorate could exercise the democratic right to replace their representatives with members pledged to the nation and the citizens rather than submitting to foreign subjugation.

As for the constitutionality clichéd in the ruling power’s defense in declining people’s request on anti-corruption law,

It is poignant to raise the question –

Is promoting dynastic rule declared democratic in the Constitution?

While civil movement leader Shri Anna Hazare’s vision for corrupt free society denigrated by ruling authority comparing the Gandhian to fallen Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi and Communist ex-premier Mao Tse-Tung,

Indian governance emulating Italian model under Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and deteriorating further in adapting former Prime Minister Benito Mussolini’s hardline leadership exhibited during brutal clamp down of peaceful participants – men, women and children beaten at night unbeknown by police force per incumbent authority’s authorization at Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev’s anti-corruption rally on June 4, 2011.

Subsequently apprehending the non-violent and peaceful dissenter  – 73 years old Shri Anna Hazare absconded to undisclosed location prior to imprisonment in Tihar Jail on August 16, 2011 is indeed a grave concern for the oppressed world’s largest democracy.

Furthermore, Congress Party complicity in the Sri Lankan government genocide of ethnic Tamils with logistic assistance to Sri Lanka in the mission,

Accompanied by honoring the Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa as the chief guest at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi despite the Sri Lankan leader’s atrocities in the ethnic cleansing of Tamils in Sri Lanka –

Confirms the Congress Party leadership’s blatant disregard for Indian nationals plight and humanity at large.

In light of these extreme measures and reckless decisions the ruling party has lost legitimacy as a democratic government and the oppositions complacency largely contributed to abuse of power defying citizens’ call for accountability on national issues.

Unless corruption, nepotism and cronyism is uprooted from the political apparatus – the epidemic source in the society,

Indian progress will not reach the vast majority desperate for liberation from economic woes, social injustice and now political oppression.

Shri Anna Hazare’s health is understandably precarious on the 8th consecutive day of fasting and,

The government determination to deny the citizens freedom from corruption through Jan Lokpal bill proves the political establishment has lost credibility to govern the nation founded by Mahatma Gandhi and many venerable leaders’ sacrifices.

Indian citizens and expatriates around the globe ought to be commended for their relentless campaign against corruption and solidarity in the crusade sets precedence to the rest of the world.

Prime Minister Man Mohan Singh and opposition leaders could resolve this national crisis immediately with the acknowledgment of Jan Lokpal bill to address the systemic corruption crippling the society.

Reiterating the urgency to adopt Jan Lokpal bill as the viable solution to curb corruption and resurrect ethical conduct in daily life.

Shri Anna Hazare ending fast is vital for the leader’s survival and national unity.

The government and opposition leaders political fate is largely dependent on their humble outreach to heal the nation’s pain endured in the corruption riddled system by legislating Jan Lokpal bill.

If the leaders at the political helm hesitate in eradicating corruption, then the youth of today to be leaders tomorrow are prepared to bear the torch in the unique rebirth of modern India.

Citizens’ voices will be heard with people power prevailing in national cause.

Shri Anna Hazare’s dream for Jan Lokpal bill could soon be a reality with the united front from all walks of life maintaining momentum until Jan Lokpal bill becomes the formidable act in deterring corruption.

Please join Shri Anna Hazare – the inspirational force committed to universal peace and prosperity.

Jai Hind!

Peace to all!

Thank you.

India – Jan Lokpal bill and Political Stalemate

August 22, 2011

By Padmini Arhant

Civil Society leader Shri Anna Hazare continues his fasting for the 7th consecutive day while the ruling and opposition parties fail to honor the constitution that upholds the republic will.

Constitution with “We the People” declaration prioritizes people above all branches of governance in a functioning democracy.

Jan Lokpal bill emphasis on corruption and appropriate actions against the corrupt are the contentious issues for political power in Parliament considering both ruling Congress and BJP along with others are implicated with numerous scandals and charges at state and national level.

The questions regarding Jan Lokpal bill whether it would pass in both houses of Parliament and the argument based on various proposals in the bill to curb corruption is simply a rebuttal from the political side to delay and eventually eliminate Lokpal bill discussion from public domain.

Seeking legislation on Jan Lokpal bill that would effectively address criminality surrounding corruption in the society beginning with political system is thwarted especially when the lawmakers responsible for corruption are required to pass the bill subjecting them to transparency and accountability.

The skepticisms on Jan Lokpal bill approval in the Parliament directed at content viability are diversion from the real factors i.e.

Parliament members’ concerted attempts to block the unbiased and meaningful anti-corruption law in the country.

The ruling members against Jan Lokpal bill and opposition parties not entirely backing the anti-graft unequivocally favor the status quo allowing gross abuse of power granting them impunity on corruption and unlawful activities directly affecting national progress.

The incumbent finance minister demand on civil society to abide by the constitution is double standards alongside the current administration arresting Shri Anna Hazare prior to peaceful assembly on August 16, 2011.

Furthermore the government position on Jan Lokpal bill rejecting republic will under false pretexts such as Parliamentary procedures, respect for constitution and democratic institutions…is contradictory to their own actions thus far.

The legislators ignore the fact that without republic there would be no constitution, Parliament, democratic institutions and last but not the least Parliamentarians viz. elected officials in a democracy.

Constitution protects people first and foremost as citizens and electorates with guaranteed rights to freedom of expression not excluding basis to laws concerning public and national interest.

UPA government throughout anti-corruption rallies previously by the Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev in June 2011 and lately with Shri Anna Hazare has violated citizens’ constitutional rights time and time again.

The government misuse of the constitution to suit their convenience is transgression in a democratic system.

Civil society non-violent approach mischaracterized as anarchy when the government extreme measures and relentless tactics to bar Jan Lokpal bill is anything but democracy.

Corruption is protected as the rule of law in the political inaction on all sides with hypocrisy maintained in the defense.

It is poignant to highlight Congress role on similar issues with opposite response leading towards political reasons behind discriminatory decisions.

National Advisory Council headed by Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi drafts on FOOD Bill and Communal Violence is reportedly expedited by the government without modifications and,

Concurrently Shri Anna Hazare’s Jan Lokpal bill benefitting all – the poor and middle class in particular is challenged with undemocratic strategies like arrests and aggression,

Besides refusal to introduce the bill in Parliament for consideration confirms the misplaced loyalty in the post Independent India.

Comparing the two scenarios – Food bill and targeting communal violence brings relief to economic and social victims, at the same time adding political mileage to the party.

On the contrary, political parties facing charges view Jan Lokpal bill as a major threat to the privileges viz. exemption from inquiry or investigations with no consequences.

If legislations are passed selectively for specific political agenda, it does not correlate with the assertion on Parliament sanctity applied to Jan Lokpal bill.

Evaluating each bill on individual merit is relevant.

However, Jan Lokpal is a lifesaver with the opportunity to recover and retain national wealth for domestic investments.

Black money is widely in circulation through bribes and restricting illegal money supply is required under Jan Lokpal bill.

Prime Minister Man Mohan Singh, BJP leaders along with other opposition members are undertaking tremendous risk in continuing with the impasse between civil society led by Shri Anna Hazare and them.

Shri Anna Hazare’s fast ending immediately is paramount to salvage the nation and political leaderships from dealing with monumental crisis possibly endangering national security.

With respect to Jan Lokpal bill examination and debate, the Parliament members are reminded that Jan Lokpal bill has been under scrutiny for over six decades and procrastination reflects all political parties unanimity to prolong corruption as religion in the society.

It is imperative for civil society to seriously engage in forming Lokpal party to compete in national and state elections.  This is the only path to liberate India from political oppression experienced in the twenty first century.

The Congress Party and opposition alike are requested for the last time to acknowledge nearly 98% of 1.2 billion population endorsement of Jan Lokpal bill overwhelmingly overriding the 500 Parliament members resistance and conclude the political stalemate momentarily.

Failure in this regard would determine the political system in India synonymous to the governance in Middle East or pre World War era.  The political rule disguised as democracy in name only is betrayal of republic trust,

Hence legislating Jan Lokpal bill is no longer an option but a necessity to move the nation forward sharing prosperity among all citizens rather than exclusive distribution to the top 1% evidently hoarding money in Swiss bank accounts from embezzlements, tax evasions and innovative sources.

Citizens’ participation to succeed in Jan Lokpal bill legislation is outstanding and keeping up the momentum is equally essential so that Shri Anna Hazare could stop fasting from today.

The government and political oppositions bear the burden to legislate Jan Lokpal bill instantaneously proving their allegiance to the people and the nation they were elected to serve during the term in office.

Yes instantaneously due to the alarming loss of life and national resources wasted in the 64 years since freedom.

Vande Mataram! Jai Hind!

Peace to all!

Thank you.

India – Jan Lokpal Bill (Anti-Corruption Law)

August 20, 2011

By Padmini Arhant

The standoff between civil society leader Shri Anna Hazare and Central government through State police concluded with the agreement on peaceful and non-violent assembly at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi.

Civil Society leader Shri Anna Hazare and team are expected to continue their peaceful rally on Ramlila ground, New Delhi.

Shri Anna Hazare has decided to fast during the 14 days public gathering allowed by law enforcement authority.

The overwhelming national response from all walks of life is indicative of the urgency to legislate Jan Lokpal bill liberating Indian society from systemic corruption.

Indian citizens have demonstrated extraordinary patriotism and unity towards the common goal for corruption affects the entire population promoting criminality among those at the epicenter.

With bribery and tax evasions rampant alongside kickbacks received from lucrative deals and contracts in both private and public sector,

The national treasury is drained leaving the middle class, lower income and the poor – the worst victims of the epidemic.

Society’s upper class exchange favors given the massive disclosed and undisclosed income from different sources not to mention ties with the political class and corporate dealings facilitating bribery as the standard business practice across the spectrum.

Furthermore bribery is also money laundering as the wealthy and business ventures convert black money into white through bribes.

Therefore Jan Lokpal bill would be more effective deterring the art of giving and receiving bribes in any manner i.e. cash or kind.

Political elections are well known for bribing voters with cash and other incentives basically buying votes with illegal means and counterfeit money supply as found in recent Tamil Nadu polls.

Such blatant abuse of power by the ruling and opposition political factions void democracy and must be addressed in the Jan Lokpal bill curbing anti-democratic strategies by political contenders in the state and national elections.

It is important for election committee to be A-political in order to act decisively against all political parties’ undemocratic methods adopted to win elections and debar candidates as well as parties in violation of democratic rules.

Corruption begins from the top bottom considering the political clout emboldens the lawmakers to be the lawbreakers trickling down to the basic service provider.

Civil Society momentum should be wisely used not only to fight against corruption but also two other ingrained social carcinogens  – nepotism and cronyism that deprives nation from being represented on merit, commitment and integrity besides eliminating opportunity for the marginalized demography.

Youth movement is highly energized and rightfully so for they are the leaders in succession forced to bear the burden of the status quo.

The country with tremendous potential, innovative talent and intellectual ability is constricted in outperformance on the international domain largely due to prevalent corruption, nepotism and cronyism widespread in the system.

Political field in India is dominant with the affluent and celebrities from the entertainment industry seeking symbolic status to maintain prominence while the remaining majority suppresses their political ambitions due to open corruption culture demanding huge compromise on ethics.

With money power playing significant role in politics worldwide, the average citizen is bereft of genuine representation on issues concerning their daily struggle for existence.

The hesitation to discuss and approve Jan Lokpal bill in Parliament is the acknowledgment of politics preventing accountability despite national image tarnished by erupting scandals at state and national level hindering economic progress in the cross-sections of the society.

India’s GDP growth at 8.8% largely benefits the rich with over 80% of population barely sharing the prosperity evident in the glaring economic reality prompting overwhelming support for Shri Anna Hazare’s call to eradicate corruption.

Hoarding money in Swiss bank accounts apart from several unlawful involvements against national interest is not the reason for electing officials in a democracy.

It is poignant to highlight that Parliament members would not be able to execute their power without the electorate electing them to office.

Legislation is carried out in Parliament.

However, ignoring republic will on core national issue viz. corruption having crippled billion lives is a testimony to morality and ethics ominously abstained in politics.

Otherwise Jan Lokpal bill would have been passed honoring citizens’ quest for a corrupt free society.

The elitists’ hypocritical remarks against true patriot Shri Anna Hazare is yet another example of the expanding gulf between the privileged and disenfranchised in the growing socio-economic disparity.

As for the claim that Parliamentarians know better than people and civil society leadership – confirms supremacy reminiscent of pre-Independence India.

If Parliamentary power were so diligent then it would have reflected in the infra structure, improvement in the millions of lives living in abject poverty and led the world in environmental goals.

Furthermore it is asserted that Shri Anna Hazare followers are ignorant of the Jan Lokpal bill and simply contributing to extreme optimism without proper knowledge or understanding.

Again this misconception about the mass movement constituting statistics rather than comprehending substance is snobbery – the remnant of British Raj resurfacing for political gains denying freedom from corruption.

University students, Professionals and media familiar with Jan Lokpal bill content and the distinction from Government bill could undertake the task in explaining to civil society in layman terms for their information.

Then people could intensify pressure on the Government to pass the bill with no more procrastination.

Shri Anna Hazare is into 5th day of his fasting and Government’s reluctance through delay tactics signify the real intention to block Jan Lokpal bill at the detriment of civil society leader’s health creating unnecessary tension in the country.

Government Lokpal bill apart from many conflicting thoughts and preventions essentially provide impunity to political figures and judiciary with a buffer zone from corruption.

Shri Anna Haxare team request for CBI’s (Central Bureau of Investigation) anti-corruption wing to function as independent investigation unit requires massive public drive due to government reservations on Jan Lokpal legislation.

The clock is ticking for the Government and debates on avoiding instead of accepting the robust Jan Lokpal bill is a political maneuver having direct impact on the critical situation of Shri Anna Hazare’s indefinite fasting,

Not withstanding the ultimate political disaster awaiting the nay Sayers in the next elections.

Civil society must not give up their support to the extraordinary pledge by Shri Anna Hazare and team against corruption.

Please continue the peaceful and non-violent march until Jan Lokpal bill becomes the law of the land releasing the nation from the shackles of corruption, nepotism and cronyism.

It is crucial to step up citizens’ demand in expediting Jan Lokpal legislation and end Shri Anna Hazare’s fast.

Is there any honorable Parliament member willing to sacrifice their health for national cause?

Fasting for days to succeed in national mission benefitting all is Shri Anna Hazare’s exemplary dedication to the nation the leader has served throughout his life.

The nation salutes leaders like Shri Anna Hazare for the guidance to the powerful and powerless on righteous path by adhering to Gandhian principles in non-violent civil disobedience.

Mahatma Gandhi founded Congress Party and all other political factions are urged to pass the popular Jan Lokpal bill and peacefully resolve the ongoing people vs. government dispute.

Shri Anna Hazare terminating fast upon successful legislation is now dependent on the government and the opposition in both houses of Parliament.

Good Luck! To civil society, Shri Anna Hazare and team in the victory on anti-corruption law to recover and retain national wealth.   It would be the cornerstone for people power in restoring democratic rule.

Jai Hind!

Peace to all!

Thank you.

India – People Power Prevails in Democracy

August 16, 2011

By Padmini Arhant

Indian government honorable decision to release the civil society leader Shri Anna Hazare and the team including many citizens arrested prior to peaceful assembly is welcome and deeply appreciated.

Prime Minister Man Mohan Singh, cabinet ministers, leaders in political opposition, Delhi police and others involved are further requested to expedite the process with written assurance on constitution guaranteed individual rights to remain intact not barring peaceful and non-violent event.

Considering government procrastination and unsuccessful negotiations between civil society and the government appointed committee on Lokpal bill,

Shri Anna Hazare could perhaps be seeking the authority’s non-intervention with the scheduled fasting in New Delhi.

However, the incumbent administration could deal with the issue by setting a date within this week to discuss and decide on the Lokpal bill followed by legislation in the monsoon session.

Since the ruling power must organize through the Lokpal committee for presentation in Parliament, all party cooperation is essential to pass the bill.

Any delay from political class regardless of incumbency would decelerate legislation causing public anger and frustration leading to law and order crisis.

It is in citizens’ and national interest to move forward with a genuine commitment from various political factions to eradicate corruption across the spectrum.

Failure to meet obligations on Lokpal bill would revive the civil society movement in an unprecedented scale enabling people power to succeed in the national mission by rejecting obstructive sources in 2014 elections.

Given the national fervor on widespread corruption, it would be a tremendous political cost for lack of co-operation in the anticipated robust anti-corruption law.

Shri Anna Hazare and esteemed members in the team are requested to return to negotiation for a meaningful and solid Lokpal bill addressing the corruption and tax evasion culture in the society.

The government and political leaderships in Parliament bear equal responsibility in passing the historic legislation for the present and future generation.

Government attempts to quell dissent or disintegrate civil society gathering with overwhelming security personnel would be deviation from democratic system.

Lokpal and Lokyukta structures are paramount to regain national wealth for domestic investments.

Citizens must seriously engage in forming the Lokpal political party at the center and Lokyukta in the state to serve the people in the country.

This would pose an imminent challenge for existing political parties to consider reform within and outside their domain.

Congratulations! To all citizens in India and overseas for the unity in strengthening democracy with people power.

Shri Anna Hazare and respectable members in the team demonstrated resolve despite extreme circumstances upon them.

The struggle must continue until the loopholes free satisfactory Lokpal bill becomes the law of the land.

Good Luck! To all on Lokpal bill and Lokpal political party to restore Loktantra (republic rule) in the society.

Jai Hind!

Peace to all!

Thank you.

India – Democracy under Siege

August 16, 2011

By Padmini Arhant

Ironically, following India’s Independence Day commemoration on August 15, 2011,

Anti-Corruption – Indian citizens’ backed Lokpal bill is threatened with the political class’ undemocratic action in prohibiting civil society leader Shri Anna Hazare and team members from peaceful assembly.

It is a direct violation of constitutional right invalidating republic rule with the civil society representatives’ arrests marking a sad day for the world’s largest democracy.

Non-violent civil disobedience pioneer Mahatma Gandhi founded Congress Party is compromised in the clash between politics and ethics.

Now the major political party aggressive intervention is implicative of oppressive governance denying civil rights guaranteed to every citizen in a democratic society.

Prime Minister Man Mohan Singh is requested to honor the democratic principles and recognize the individual rights to freedom of expression without any further suppression.

Shri Anna Hazare and team along with Lokpal bill supporters are pledged to non-violence and peaceful gathering.

Jan Lokpal or civil society participation in national issue is not an imminent danger to national security as claimed by the government.

Prior to the scheduled fasting, reportedly the government detained Shri Anna Hazare and team moving them to undisclosed location.

Such action does not reflect democratic course and proactive measures confirming government crackdown is deeply disappointing not to mention the hard line approach to quell dissent.

The ruling authority is urged to respect constitutional law by immediately releasing Shri Anna Hazare and others held in custody.

As taxpayers. Indian electorate grievances on the crippling corruption overwhelmed with tax evasion at every level is legitimate and deserves national attention.

Obstructing Lokpal bill reveals the government efforts to thwart anticipated progress provoking unwanted public anger and frustration detrimental to national law and order.

The government bears responsibility to restore fundamental values and exercise democratic means rather than replicating past erroneous decisions endangering the core civil right viz. national rally behind monumental Lokpal bill.

Indian leadership is taken to task in maintaining national image causing no harm to the people across the spectrum for that would exemplify Congress party commitment to the government of the people, by the people and for the people.

Meanwhile citizens around the country are encouraged to remain peaceful and non-violent in their support to Lokpal bill aimed at corruption eradication.

Shri Anna Hazare and esteemed members involved in national rescue from debilitating corruption due to eroding morality ought to be commended for their crusade and not apprehended by the political power.

Congress government credibility is at stake with the unlawful and unconstitutional response towards civil society.

Congress party loyalists defending the arrests of Shri Anna Hazare and other peaceful participants clarify hierarchic appeasement creating the opportunity for the inevitable Lokpal bill,

Notwithstanding the formation of Lokpal party as the formidable challenger to the political establishment conspicuously departed from Gandhian Congress that ended foreign rule in India.

With the world watching Indian democracy under siege, the people power could no longer be bystanders and it is time to mobilize the nation in recovering lost sovereignty.

India is at the crossroads to lead others in the battle against corruption and Indian democracy through peace and non-violence must rise to the occasion once again to save the nation from the growing epidemic.

As for the government, reconciliation and not retaliation is beneficial to sustain peace and stability.

It is indeed a critical hour and politics has no place in national drive to sanitize the contaminated environment.

Democracy prevails when power remains with the electorate and the elected officials submit to transparency and accountability.

Any political system in defiance of meaningful checks and balances is anything but constitution-governed democracy.

Lokpal party in the national and Lokyukta at the state governance is the future for India.

Jai Bharat!

Peace to all!

Thank you.

United Kingdom – London Riots

August 13, 2011

By Padmini Arhant

The past week was tumultuous for the two most influential western powers – the United States and the United Kingdom.

While the United States experienced stock market volatility following the U.S. credit rate downgrading by S&P 500,

Across the Atlantic, the United Kingdom had to deal with economic adversity driven citizen riots that led to London and other cities burning reportedly claiming at least 3 lives during the week–long unrest witnessed by the world.

Although, approximately 1900 rioters are believed arrested for prosecution and some already sentenced to jail in the aftermath of looting, rioting and inflicting damages to the community,

The politics in Britain is yet to find solution for the problems that triggered such outrage and anarchy in the society with history on imperialistic rule around the globe until the 20th century.

Whenever substantial demography reach rock bottom, the simmering frustration from economic deprivation and social injustice surface as the lightening rod much to the governing authority’s bewilderment.

Citizens on the loose rampaged the streets and neighborhoods in an attempt to convey their political message without consideration for serious ramifications upon them and the people at the receiving end.

Civil disobedience is effective only through non-violent means guaranteed to attract local and international attention on political oppression, economic disparity or social inequality and last but not the least ethical decay.

Violence resulting in innocent deaths and financial losses undermine the underlying facts in inner city and outskirts with economic victims turning into unruly protesters spreading misery all around exacerbating the social plight.

Government austerity plan is predominantly held responsible for the majority suffering since students from low-income groups find difficulty attending university in the wake of state grants and assistance withdrawal.

Additionally, those with college education are facing severe job cuts and unable to get employed unless the individual has society’s influential members’ recommendation for the job they are applying in both private and public sector.

The regular selection method on merit basis evaluating performance and aptitude is no longer prevalent,

Not to mention the marginalized segments pushed below the poverty line and opportunity for them remaining a far-fetched dream in the industrialized and developing nations.

Otherwise the inept, corrupt and greed characteristics overwhelmingly prevail in the respective domain.

If these realities are not conspicuous to the political class and the society’s elite focused on disproportionate personal wealth acquisition,

The governance is merely symbolic in the failure to address basic needs of the people they were elected to serve in public office.

It is a common syndrome in the contemporary political systems engaged in creating rather than resolving crisis.

Dysfunctional apparatus with misplaced priorities is the source for social disorder.

Structural overhaul promoting moral and ethics premised on transparency and accountability would definitively offer relief to the deteriorating economic and political conditions in the society.

Warfare commitments overriding social requirements and nation building is another unpopular political decision contributing to rising debt and deficit status.

Domestic investments to improve the living standards of the people through jobs, education, health care, clean and safe environment would yield productivity under fair practices making citizens proud of their contribution to national progress.

Political leaderships demonstrating courage and integrity in the legislative process for collective gains instead of selective interests would be a refreshing start in the review and reform actions.

The disgruntled and disenfranchised citizens in the United Kingdom are urged to disavow hostile behavior and submit their grievances to the government in a peaceful and democratic manner.

Racial tensions provoking social disturbance is not the answer to economic woes for many share the burden to a certain extent with major responsibility on government and business leaders to work together for economic recovery.

Evidently the have-nots are not the only dissatisfied groups on the status quo, others too have their opinion in the crumbling morality of human nature particularly in the political and elitist circle.

Comment from UK. Daily Telegraph News Reporter on London riots:

“Peter Oborne argues that the moral decay is not just happening in the most deprived parts of our country:

David Cameron, Ed Miliband and the entire British political class came together yesterday to denounce the rioters.  They were of course right to say that the actions of these looters, arsonists and muggers were abhorrent and criminal, and that the police should be given more support.

But there was also something very phony and hypocritical about all the shock and outrage expressed in parliament.   MPs spoke about the week’s dreadful events as if they were nothing to do with them.

I cannot accept that this is the case.

Indeed, I believe that the criminality in our streets cannot be dissociated from the moral disintegration in the highest ranks of modern British society.

The last two decades have seen a terrifying decline in standards among the British governing elite.

It has become acceptable for our politicians to lie and to cheat.

An almost universal culture of selfishness and greed has grown up.”

Good Luck! To U.K. leaderships and residents in coming together as a nation in bridging the gap between the privileged and impoverished alongside improving human qualities through empathy  – the fundamental element for unity in the society.

Peace to all!

Thank you.

United States – Debt Ceiling Deal

August 2, 2011

By Padmini Arhant

Leaderships in Washington confirmed consensus on debt ceiling deal passed in the House and Senate in order to avert the manufactured crisis from policies targeting the core consumer base while promoting no revenue in the deficit reduction plan.

The present agreement authorizing government to pay the bills and meet other financial obligations is premised on spending cuts equal to or exceeding the borrowing sum with an immediate increase of $400 billion followed by another $500 billion not barring Congressional blockade,

Alongside more than $900 billion in savings over ten years from downsizing operating expenses within cabinet as well as federal agencies.

Overall debt limit $2.1 trillion considered allowing Treasury to address various payments through 2012 elections and simultaneously minimizing federal spending equivalent to or above the debt amount spanning a decade with no tax increases otherwise income.

Federal budget due in Oct 1, 2011 is set to reduce spending by $7 billion below the existing level to achieve the desirable debt deceleration.

The proposal on bipartisan 12 members House-Senate committee expected to recommend more federal deficit trimmings up to $1.5trillion for legislation by Congress adhering to the requirements.

Upon committee’s failure to generate at least $1.2trillion debt containment, mandatory spending cuts across the federal budget is in place against Pentagon, domestic discretionary appropriations not excluding farm subsidies and Medicare reimbursements to health care providers.

Accordingly the debt limit to be raised anywhere between $1.2trillioin – $1.5trillion based on the funds availability in the budget.

The reassurance in the deal per reports is the exemption on Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid benefits in addition to veteran programs not affected in the process.

Also the legislation seeks Congressional approval for constitutional amendment on balanced budget.

The approach to avert default is mainly focused on spending constraints again ignoring the revenue factor equally important for deficit reduction and economic revival.

Restricting spending in areas without oversight on the out-of-control expenditures are necessary such as Pentagon disproportionate allocations reportedly unaudited up until now due to operations regarded too big to monitor.

Commitments to overhaul tax structure closing loopholes on tax evasions might improve systems efficiency besides contributing to savings for job creation.

As for broadening taxpayer base – the tax burden is already on the middle class and lower income when legislation on Bush tax cuts extended to the wealthy and non-tax paying corporations viz. General Electric…resulting in zero or minimal tax payments combined with job exports and investments overseas.

Lowering tax rates for the top 1% with substantial disposable income not always invested in domestic growth is reflected in poor GDP and national unemployment.

Capitalism thriving under maximum capital infusion would apply if the private sector and individuals benefiting from huge tax breaks and subsidies restored manufacturing by increasing productivity and fair income distribution from upward trend in job market.

Unfortunately the debate on the Senate floor favoring tax policy proved detrimental for the economy is pushed forward even though the decisions have adversarial impact on the average Americans – representing the work force and consumers crucial for any economic model to survive and succeed in the competitive global environment.

The deal is sensible in terms of relevant spending cuts and preserving Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and veterans benefits provided the provisions are implemented with no possibility for maneuver.

However, neglecting the income aspect via taxes and other avenues is not pragmatic given the latest outcome on Bush tax cuts extension exacerbating economic status by widening the gap between the haves and have-nots,

Notwithstanding the middle class bearing the bulk of economic woes attributed to higher joblessness and housing market decline.

Constitutional amendment for balanced budget imposes fiscal discipline paramount in reversing deficit spending to surplus reserves for investments in infra-structure, education, health, secure retirement, research and development leading to sustainable progress.

In this context, the deal providing $17 billion additional funding towards Pell Grants over the next two years for low income college students is noteworthy.

In general, the deal struck in an effort to prevent default has chartered the course to curb spending and,

Hopefully, the bipartisan House-Senate committee would strongly recommend robust tax reform and meaningful income sources to achieve balanced budget in the immediate future.

Getting the fiscal house in order is the shared aspiration in Congress and the phenomenal costs from perpetual warfare adding to national deficit barely addressed by fiscal conservatives in the slash spending political discourse.

In fact the outgoing Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen statement reinforced the mission in Afghanistan in spite of deteriorating monetary conditions.

National priorities deviating from destructive course would strengthen economy and guarantee better living standards for all with prosperity promising more taxpayers to overcome challenges ahead.

Fiscal responsibility is no longer an option but a necessity to regain economic power and consistent rational means recognizing the pros and cons of austerity together with extravagant wasteful spending on wars at several trillion dollars would perhaps expedite anticipated economic recovery.

United States has the ability to rise to the occasion in saving grace.

Political differences aside, displaying solidarity in national interest is a democratic value and the United States Congress could continue to forge bipartisanship with a permanent departure from Washington gridlock on all issues.

That would be the American electorate dream come true.!

Peace to all!

Thank you.

Norway – Memorial Service for Victims of Twin Terror Violence

July 27, 2011

By Padmini Arhant

Norway is mourning the loss of innocent lives in the twin terror that shocked the capital Oslo and Utoya island in the city proximity on July 22, 2011.

The bomb blast in the government headquarters in Oslo followed by the shooting spree at the Labor youth camp on the island has claimed 76 lives and left many injured.

Norwegians have shown extraordinary courage and reacted to the horrific event with calm and solidarity.

The peace loving Nordic nation’s dignified response to an individual act is a fine example of demonstrating humanitarian quality that truly represents the innate human nature.

Despite the fear and tragedy in the unexpected violence caused by the single entity’s misguided belief,

The government and people decision to reject acrimony in favor of harmony is remarkable upholding democratic values and principles,

But not compromising on security and proactive measures to deter recurring incidents in the future.

Honorable Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg message promoting peace and unity alongside distinguished Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere and esteemed dignitaries of the monarchy, Crown Prince Haakon attending memorial service in the World Islamic Mission Mosque in Oslo on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 provides exemplary guidance to society in their commitment to non-violence and diversity – the essence of natural creation enriching the beauty of life.

Notions deflecting from reality often misleads human mind triggering deeply regrettable actions with irreversible outcome when it involves fatalities and painful consequences for those engaged in such crimes.

Contemporary world is confused and embroiled in detecting differences rather than recognizing commonalities and uniqueness in human race that brings forth the concept of oneness while maintaining personal attributes for greater good.

The arrest of Anders Behring Breivik for the combined assault on fellow citizens is a necessary judicial process in lawful society,

However spreading knowledge about reconciliation prospects outweighing confrontational practices would immensely help human relations evolve to benefit self and others in the increasingly violent environment.

Every step towards social progress begins with mutual understanding and regard for one another,

Notwithstanding acknowledgment of consolidated strengths – the important factor in any achievements by society.

Human accomplishments thus far is a testimony to the fact that nation thrives in staying united and not divided for polarization through ignorance serve none including the source of origin.

Collective contributions in human talent and labor enable the world productive challenging impossibility on milestones in every frontier.

Synthesizing the best features in eastern and western cultures for a new dimension in development could be promising for the equally significant civilizations in ancient and modern context.

Hence all efforts to sustain racial, religious and gender equality would be the impetus to alleviate economic disparity and prevalent political instability across the globe.

Norway citizens and political leaderships deserve praise for handling the domestic crisis with poise in addition to their consistent role in peaceful negotiations on international conflicts.

No words can offer solace to the bereaved members bearing the burden of sorrow from the senseless violence.

Nonetheless time is a great healer and trust in a better tomorrow filled with hope, love and respect for life guarantees tranquility and happiness in daily existence.

With sincere condolences to the victims’ families, thoughts and prayers conveyed for the departed souls to rest in peace and the wounded for speedy recovery.

Peace to all!

Thank you.

United States – National Debt Ceiling, Deficit Reduction and Balancing the Budget

July 24, 2011

By Padmini Arhant

Leaders in Congress and White House held vigorous discussions on national fiscal crisis up until recent standoff disrupting political discourse.

The main focus was clarifications from each side in achieving the goal and winning congressional support for their specific agenda.

The White House request to raise debt ceiling by $2.5 trillion carefully analyzed by Congress.

Cut, cap and balance bill aimed at middle class, senior citizens and veterans from Republican majority in the House rejected in the Democrats controlled Senate.

Meanwhile the Gang of Six from the Senate presented their version highlighting tax reform alongside deep spending cuts creating a political puzzle with the legislative and executive branch struggling to arrive at a consensus urgently required to prevent national default portending serious ramifications upon failure.

Given the current national debt at $14.3 trillion extending credit limit by $2.5 trillion to facilitate borrowing for spending without revenues in the form of tax restructure and other sources exacerbates the debt situation.

Republican House bill targeting essential programs like Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and Veterans benefits while demanding spending cap at 2008 level in the absence of revenues to accommodate White House $2.5 trillion credit increase is imprudent considering the prevalent economic conditions on unaffordable health care costs and high unemployment.

The Republican members’ mandatory requirement to balance the budget through constitutional amendment is an important strategy to restore fiscal order.

However the milestone cannot be reached on severe austerity alone.

Last year Bush tax cuts extension to the wealthiest individuals and corporations with extraordinary gains was overwhelmingly approved holding the optimistic outlook on job creation and economic revival yet to be realized a year later.

The agreement between Republican members and White House in 2010 on Bush tax cuts extension proved detrimental since the opportunity to rein in deficit then was missed with generous tax breaks to the top 10 percent thereby transferring the debt burden on the remaining 90 percent – the routine targets in fiscal management.

White House stance is claimed to be over trillion dollars in spending cuts i.e. domestic discretionary and defense spending combined in addition to $650 billion from entitlement programs such as Medicare, Medicaid and Social security.

The contention for the White House is revenues not measuring up to spending restraints from the Republican side.

White House determined to obtain debt ceiling increase to a tune of $2.5 trillion beyond 2012 elections.

White House expectation from Republican members is to raise $1.2 trillion income through tax restructuring that would lower tax rates by broadening base and eliminating tax loopholes plus deductions to maintain balance.

Republican House members on their part favor slash spending and no revenues especially tax related options not considered in the equation.

The pragmatic approach to the highly contentious issues – raising debt ceiling and taxes simultaneously with drastic spending constraints not sparing Medicare, Medicaid, Veterans benefits and Social security could be rationalized beginning with two major resolutions.

It would be economically sound to abandon impulsiveness when searching for practical rudiments to complex fiscal conditions.

Following precedence on debt ceiling extension is not suitable in the highly volatile global environment featuring promising gains and precipitous decline in individual and overall growth.

Similarly, compromising entitlement programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, Veterans benefits and Social Security – the only safety net for average Americans in the political bargain is best safeguarded than dismantled to attain positive returns through productivity and consumerism from healthy, able and economically stable citizens.

First and foremost, review and re-organize budget appropriations.

Budget financing for current expenditure already available in discretionary as well as defense allocations, tax reforms addressing tax evasions and deductions for luxury purpose rather than tracking the middle and lower income stimulus programs returning to the economy being the consistent consumer segment is a straightforward approach.

Exploring savings and revenues for government operation could begin with freezing salary increase and perquisites availed by Congressional members and federal agencies top management including the executive branch for two years.

Poignantly wasteful spending by Congress and federal organizations on travel and trimming bureaucracy with efficient technology could bring some relief.

Reviewing trade tariffs, levies and fees applicable on imports and providing incentives to corporations for local manufacturing and industrial expansion would trigger economic upward trend.

Selling or privatizing government owned buildings and tangible assets could assure cash conversion.

In an attempt to enhance the super wealthy income status – lowering tax rates for the rich and concurrently imposing taxes viewed negligible against the underemployed American work force tilts the scale higher again on the middle and lower income groups barely surviving in the harsh economic environment.

Corporations like General Electric innovative techniques to not only avoid paying taxes but also receiving tax refunds on zero tax payments are the kind to be blocked and dues collected retrospectively to fund legitimate services.

Protracted government operations and congressional offices replicating functions could be centralized to perform under single unit directives and supervision.

U.S. taxpayer bailouts of banking industry from 2008 to date – toxic assets removal from bank balance sheets with treasury intervention using taxpayer funds enabled banks to avoid bankruptcy,

Since rescue with taxpayer funds – banks have not eased the credit crunch experienced in commercial lending, housing market and small business stalling progress and economic recovery.

Accountability on interests owed and remaining principal balance from the bailout recipients could aid treasury from potential national default considering the banking sector’s record profits largely directed to CEO‘s extravagant bonuses and stock option distribution adhering to business as usual practice.

Eliminating tax subsidies to energy industry exempting clean natural resource energy production,

Nonetheless pursuing fossil fuel producers are some aspects of savings and revenue prospects to assist in debt reduction.

Environmental damages from gross negligence as witnessed in Gulf coast oil spill and repeat offences restoration costs collected from energy, pharmaceutical and agricultural chemical fertilizer companies…would supplement state and national income.

Without having to raise debt ceiling now or in the future, the unused budget allocations not excluding redundant expenditures could be identified for budgetary requirements.

Lowering tax rates from 35 to 29 percent to the top bracket could be incentivized for domestic investments and job creation instead of the reduction standardized that is otherwise held in offshore tax havens and Swiss bank accounts.

Again reiterating the fact that mortgage interest payments and other genuine deductions to middle and lower income groups representing the vast active consumer base and labor force routinely reinvested back in the economy.

Therefore any drastic initiatives to terminate essential services to Senior citizens, veterans and vulnerable demography notwithstanding economic stimulants to middle class America would fall back on the state ultimately affecting national GDP.

The House Speaker John Boehner and Republican House members’ position declining debt ceiling adjustment is relevant in light of alarming national deficit at $14.3 trillion and inevitably escalated with $2.5 trillion borrowing that could be procured from within the budget and monetary instruments at the treasury.

At the same time, Republican Congress in the house and Senate cannot avert default without meaningful and realistic fiscal solutions consisting revenues with tax reforms, levies and payments from Wall Street for causing economic and environmental adversity.

Although spending cuts targeting Main Street is the predominant component in every proposal not sparing the economically vital programs like Medicare, Medicaid, Veterans provisions and Social Security,

Republican majority in the House – Legislation titled cut, cap and balance primarily slashed and deprived significant population from basic existence.

White House plan extracting $650 billion Medicare, Medicaid, Veterans and Social security is in coherence with Republican strategy – streamlining funding for fundamental needs and tampering with robust Social security system.

Senate Gang of Six debt minimizing strategy admittedly contains 74 percent deep spending cuts and 26 percent revenue – the estimate cited as inadequate by the White House and,

Last but not the least –

Senate Republican minority leader Mitch McConnell offer yielding to White House on elevating debt ceiling generates a perception of political maneuver due to onus entirely on Democratic administration undertaking huge deficit hike likely to impact democrats in the 2012 election.

Hence ascertaining wealth in possession, income flow from taxes and other revenues juxtaposed to discretionary, defense and Congressional frugalities could provide for various government obligations.

In terms of deficit containment – ending the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Yemen and Libya and divestments in economy, health care, education and infrastructure repair and renewal is the only viable permanent remedy to rebuild the nation.

Constitutional amendment to balance the budget would not be sustained as long as the unsubstantiated unaffordable indefinite warfare remains the agenda for any administration.

The lawmakers and the White House passion to bring troops home from all corners of the world and sincere engagement in constructive dialogue leading to fruitful negotiations on all issues – fiscal matter in particular would exemplify congressional pledge towards national and public interest.

With the nation on the brink of financial insolvency communication breakdown and obstinacy for political reasons perpetuates the problem and adversely impact incumbents on both sides.

Esteemed members in Congress and White House are urged to resume talks by isolating political differences for bipartisanship on budget –

Without moving debt ceiling,

Preserving Medicare, Medicaid, Veterans and Social security funding,

Expeditious tax overhaul for ongoing legitimate income,

Exploring further income options on federal government activities and,

Finally concluding wars conducted on borrowed money from overstretched credit limits and external creditors viz. China and Saudi Arabia.

It’s time to halt the destructive course and steer the nation forward with thoughtful decisions relieving the present and next generation from burgeoning debt as long lasting legacy and tribute to the brave hearts for their sacrifice to the nation they defended in all frontiers.

Hopefully wisdom and rationality would guide leaderships in the peaceful reconciliation of fiscal and monetary policy.

When diverse ideas recognized and formulated to promote common cause that guarantees satisfaction to all then none left behind in their aspiration to rise to the occasion.

Good Luck! To all members for successful legislation on national debt reduction, adopting fair income expenditure methods in balancing the budget and diligently reverting to budget surplus than relying on enlarging unmanageable debt ceiling.

Peace to all!

Thank you.
